They've sent me two

A few years ago I bought a dedicated flash-gun for my camera direct from Sony UK. When it arrived, it was in it correct box packed in a large outer box which also contained a 5Gb Microdrive (old technology now, but leading-edge stuff at the time). So I rang Sony and offered to return it. The person I was eventually connected to told me quite stroppily that I must be mistaken as Sony would never make such a fundamental error.

So I kept the microdrive for few weeks in case they changed their minds, then sold it on eBay for £120.

A friend applied for two grants for his two daughters at university. One of them was Sheila Ann M. the other Sandra M. He was sent a reply to say that his three daughters had been awarded the grants.

He phoned to ask what was going on, he only had two daughters.

No, said the young man, you have three - Sheila, Ann and Sandra. It says so here.

"Well," said father, "if that is so then one of them must have been an immaculate conception, because I only know of two - one is called Sheila Ann and the other Sandra, but you have the paperwork, you must know better than I do"

In the vein of ' they won't listen' We bought a property that had been empty for 7 years. We needed to know who supplied the gas. We phoned every energy supplier and they all said, not us. Then we were told to contact Trans co, they were responsible for the pipes supplying the property. They said there weren't any gas pipes to that property, we said there were as we were using gas. They said "it's nothing to do with us." So we didn't pay for gas for 5 years.

It happened to me a CD collection. We kept it for ages and then sold it on eBay.

Daughter ordered a garden table with 8 chairs recently. They delivered only 4 chairs. It took her ages on the phone to get through and ask for another 4. They sent 8! Divers bike she was at work. Ages more on the phone to get them to collect - she didn't have room for them in any case, and was worried about the massive cardboard packaging getting rained on.

You do wonder about the efficiency of some of these companies.

Believe it or not, this happened to me - with two identical fridges. After weeks of endless phone calls arguing beseeching and doing my best to return the extra one, I gave up.

Neversaydie I would write and give them a firm deadline, say 2 weeks at most, and say that after that after that the mattresses will be disposed of and she will look to them to pay the costs of disposal and charge for their storage.

She is a reluctant bailee of the goods and bailee law is complicated and unclear but people are not expected to store items for an unreasonable length of time and she has given them an opportunity to recover them. They are being unreasonable. I doubt that they would sue if she got rid of them and no court would be sympathetic so there is nothing to fear if she does want to get rid of them now but there is no reason she should have to have that inconvenience. They should also come at a time convenient to her which may mean outside working hours.

I won a magazine subscription some years ago. I didn't keep the original competition details but I think it was for a year. After a while I realised I had been getting them for longer than that so I tried to contact them by email. I got a pro forma reply asking for my account number. I checked the packaging and couldn't find one and I don't receive invoices. They don't have a phone number that I could find. I sent another email but got the same pro forma reply. It has now been more than five years and I am still receiving it. The company has even been sold since the original win but that made no difference.
If they query it I will just tell them that I don't know the exact terms of the competition and that I thought it would stop automatically (which is true).

Sounds like there's many a case of CBA on the part of suppliers .

I received NINE clothes drying racks from JL when I ordered one in a sale a few years ago. They were happy to have them back so long as I delivered them to their shop - a bus, a train and a walk away. They refused to collect them despite the fact that their delivery vans are constantly in the area. I found good homes for them all.

I ordered a new KIndle & 2 arrived. I told them & the performance to return it was ridiulous. I was actually told on phone that it would have been better for them if I had just shut up & kept it!

I bought a casual table from a well known online shop last year, but they sent
me two for some reason. When I contacted them they were "grateful for
my honesty" they said, and and told me to keep them both as it wasn't worth
the cost of returning. So now I have two small sofa tables.
As you have genuinely tried hard to contact your seller I think you are justified
in keeping the extra toy.

Sometimes companies do get back to you. I bought a wooden dolls house, it was flat pack so did not open the box as it was for GD's birthday. After a month they rang me and asked me to return the second item, I opened the box and there were two cartons inside. I now check items because they made me feel guilty for hanging on to the second item that I did not know was even there.

Orphanages! Dr. Barnardos? PLEASE! Barnardos hasn't had orphanages for years. I'm sure a Barnardos charity shop would be delighted to receive the toy. Why not go to one and find out more about how the charity is run to help children in this modern age?

A couple of Christmases ago I ordered a printer to give to my daughter. They sent me 4!! I rang the company I'd bought from and the delivery company and they both denied all knowledge and said I could keep them.

So I sold 2, gave one to my daughter, kept one for me and gave away my old printer.

My DD ordered 2 matresses 4arrived (2deliveries) Company has acknowkwdged mistake and says it will collect This was 4weeks ago .They are taking up room in a small flat Does anyone know how long she has to legally keep before disposing of them?

Your advice about holding fire for a month is very wise. Just in case the supplier realises and asks for it back.

I recently had 2 flower arrangements delivered on consecutive days. I told the person who had sent them to check she hadn't been charged twice and then I just enjoyed them.

Agree, you've done your best. Keep it a month, then donate, is what I'd do.

Are there any orphanages round your way, dr. Barnados or similar? Unless it's an an 'adult toy' - that would be totally inappropriate

My son had the same experience asHilda with a Christmas hamper.We enjoyed it knowing he had done his best to return. You are entitled to do as you wish with it.

It would be classed as unsolicited as it's something you didn't order. You are untitled to keep it unless they send pre paid instructions for it's return or they collect it. I agree with nina too.

A friend of mine once received two Dyson vacuum cleaners. When she finally managed to contact the supplier, they told her to keep the extra one as it was too far for them to collect it.
I would keep the toy and donate it to a children's charity.
