I agree with him, I voted remain but a lot of people didn't and the young will particularly have to struggle with the consequences, they already have a much harder time in many ways than we did, rents and lack of housing for a start, and student loans etc. I think the vote should have been open to sixteen and seventeen year olds, many of them are well informed and if they aren't it is up to us to help them.

But then, those more likely to answering a poll are probably the same demographic group as those more likely to vote.
ie those with more time perhaps?
ie the old codgers who are now in trouble for exercising their franchise as they have been brought up to do?

I have voted more or less every time there has been an election or referendum since I was 21.

KatyK, there were polls conducted by organisations such as YouGov, usually online asking how you intended to vote and how you actually voted. These also ask for your age.

I don't think I will live long enough to get back the amount I've paid in to my private pension. Let alone the state one.

I read that the Average age at Glastonbury was 45. Which means that there must have been some very old people there.

Oh dear, our fault for living past retirement age and having the nerve to vote too!!

Sorry but I don't think some people did. Just think how many people live to be 100+ yet when the pensions were worked out we were expected to live to an average of 70. Think of all the civil service, NHS, local and government employees, armed services pensioners who again were not expected to live so long and still need their pension.

Not anyone's fault but a great burden. We need to support our children and grandchildren but not everyone will and many don't have family. Personally like you I hate having to pay tax on money I earnt, invested and saved but logically I can see I have to still contribute. I worked to 63 by choice but now people will have to work longer.

What about all those people who paid in all their life's and didn't live long enough to get much back I know a lot of them ajanela I have worked ince I was 15 had to work to 62 and couldn't afford a house in Dorset we are not all wealthy pensioners I saved for my retirement and still pay tax probably won't live into old age due to health problems so feel we have put enough in pot I now use money I have to help my kids

The East Dorset area is a place where many retired people live and it was full of UKIP and EU out signs. Why didn't the young people balance the vote in East Dorset ? Because they don't live there and can't afford to do so.

Elderly people are getting far more money in pensions and benefits than they put in the pot because they are living much longer than expected. The young cannot be expected to pay for all this, older people must share some of the burden and expect pension cuts and higher taxes.

And how many people told the truth?

There are polls, there are statistics and there are lies .....

And, of course, she had many colleagues doing the same thing, probably on zero hours contracts...

KatyK On Friday afternoon I received a phone call which began with what sounded like a recorded message. Normally I just hang up but for some reason I let this one play out. When it ended the line went quiet for a second and I said to myself, but out loud, was that a recording? A female voice said, 'No it's not a recording.' I said, 'Oh! It sounded very like it.' to which she replied, 'Well, I've read those words a hundred times today!' Then she explained why she'd phoned. It was to talk about various things....including the referendum. That seems like an exit poll to me, even though a little late. With respect, I declined to take part but, of the 100 or more people she'd read the words to, a fair few must have chatted. One of her questions would have been which age bracket I'm in, another my household income and whether I own my house. That's where some of the referendum stats have come from.

I voted remain but perhaps this may be a wakeup call to some of them that life does not come on a gold-rimmed plate.

Why is it that envy rules, even of your own parents? My parents and their generation had the worst time ever, born during the First World War, growing up in the depression, fighting in World War 2, and then enduring all the hardships of the fifties until life suddenly began to get better for everyone in the sixties.
Our lucky and blessed generation have had it all; peace (relative) affordable house purchase, free university education, the NHS, the Beatles and the Stones, no problems getting employment, and many more advantages too numerous to mention. Do we now deserve to be beaten about the head and accused of - what?? Accident of birth puts you where you are - none of us can change this, and I would be deeply upset to think a child of mine wants me to die so he could have a vote. i think its right .....you cant vote before 18 as your not deemed responsible enough so after 75 maybe the same should happen why should we be able to make lasting decisions when we wont be around to suffer
Madmaisie i voted to stay but i m totally bemused by my friends who didn't My very best friend said to me, please stay my friend but i did vote to leave I reassured her we ll always be friends but asked her why She said her husband kept going on about unelected EU members making our laws she also said she thought a lot about her fathers time in WW2 i think i m even more mystified i will add that she hasnt got a raciest or bigoted bone in her body my Dad who ended the war in Burma never said a bad word about Germany or France after the war was over he did have a occassional moan about the Americans and had nothing but praise for the Ghurkas Why someone would think about 70 years ago to make a decision today I cannot imagine but she is a lovely lady so i have to forget her mistake ( I believe)

grandmattie - yes we do claim for NHS treatment for people from other EU countries I know because I worked in the NHS. I have relative's who live in Spain and all they have to do is show their E.11cards and they get treated no problem. What's going to happen now. Have the people who voted out thought about the impact on the NHS if all those retired people return to the UK.

Well my whole family, old and young, voted to Remain, in fact I only know 2 people who voted Leave so the result was a shock for us all. Personally I can't shift the awful sense of depression and anxiety I feel and the shenanigans of our politicians at a time of such crisis in our country leaves me almost speechless. I hope my children and grandchildren don't suffer because of this decision and when people realise it'll cost us a fortune to uncouple ourselves and we're unlikely to get any control on immigration I wonder how many will feel misled?

I don't get this at all. The younger folk in our family all voted to come out, the older ones to stay in. How do they know how each age group voted? I'm sure someone told me there were no exit polls in this election, or have I got that wrong?

Amazed at how the young seem to want the EU army which may bring with it conscription, and war, no one has a big army without thinking where they can invade.

As for the racist nonsense, I lived in Wales and was abused for being English every day, my SIL is abused all the time for being Irish......we both worked in the countries we live in.

People just like to run away at the mouth. I am also called old and the government positively encourages fatism, baldies don't get away with much. Don't fall for this scam, isms are ever present, try to keep it all in perspective.

This is as much about class as race and I am astonished by the way some young people are happy to despise their own countrymen who are poorer while having a blanket acceptance of people from other races.

I heard the young mans comments and totally disagree with what he said and the tone was very cold. Had I been his grandmother I would have been very upset!! Everyone over 18 has the right to vote...it's called democracy. She may live for a long time. Just coz ye getting on it doesn't mean you should no longer vote.

It's a rather brutal way of putting it - unless it is indeed a family joke - but the boy has got a point. It will be the young ones who have to live with the consequences of this vote, long after we are all gone. It's not like a general election, where we know we're not stuck with the decision forever.

Maybe the only good thing to come out of this fiasco will be a greater awareness amongst the young that they need to take action themselves, instead of leaving it up to the older generations.

Of the over 70 year old grandmas I know almost all have voted Remain including some I had assumed were for Leave. That young man needs to talk to some older people, if he dares!! My older DGSs are delighted that both their GMs voted Remain! The GSs, brothers, don't even support the same party! One admires Keir Starmer, the other was disappointed to see Savid Javid demolished by Andrew Marr.

Well said kittylester! I am getting increasingly irritated by the ageist comments and would like to point out that some of us oldies wanted to stay. I am also wondering about the strange people who voted to leave and now seem surprised their wish has been granted.
