Old ads you remember

Just had our usual 'raucous' sunday family lunch. We got onto the subject of advertisements. I sang 'Opal Fruits, made to make your mouth water' (then the rest of it, lemon, lime, orange..... ) and 'Sorry mate, you're too late, the best peas went to Farrows'! My son sang the washing machine Calgon ad! We were in stitches remembering all the ads we grew up with. Any others?

Cool clear Consulate. Cool as a mountain stream.

The Gas sell-off ads with "Don't tell Sid".

Changing the subject....my favourite present one is the beautiful ballerina who dances with her younger self thanks to No 7. The look on her face is enchanting.

One advert that I remember seeing was for Aspro, it may have been Anadin, the tag line was "For when you're feeling one degree under" For years I thought there was an illness called "wundergreeunder"

"What's the recipe today Jim" do you remember that? My two friends and I had babies within a few months of each other in 1965 and used to visit each other once a month and for a reason I forget we decided to do the recipes featured on Jimmy Young , we
had some very good lunches. We are still friends 50 years later but widespread, and disabilities stop us getting together often.

I remember Jimmy Young extolling the virtues of some washing poder and claiming it got your washing clean withought the boil wash . I used to love to listen to Jim on the radio every weekday morning. Thursday was food day with Tony De Angeli and Friday was legals with the legal eagle and the legal beagle.Sometimes he had antique specials and vet specials with Ben Fogle's dad and one day a week was the doctor with Dr. Mike Smith.

The Guinness dancing around the glass ad! Brilliant!

Ariston goes on, and on, and on.....

I remember so many of those already mentioned now that my memory has been jogged.

When my two sons were about 10 and 12, I remember them once bursting into song as we walked down the supermarket aisle past the sanitary towels: Oh, Bodyform, Bodyform for you. blush

Floradora9 Sun 24-Jul-16 18:32:49

Fray bentos means lean meat . I thought that was a literal translation , I was wrong .

miep Sun 24-Jul-16 13:43:47

Was Dvorak, duh Miep! Go to the bottom of the classical music class

LullyDully Wed 20-Jul-16 18:26:21

Shows the success of ads if they are still in our brains 40 years on. Not that they influence my shopping...........or maybe......

gettingonabit Wed 20-Jul-16 15:17:29

Tired old woman. It was a marching song.
All the dirt all the grit
Hoover picks up every bit
Hoover beats as it sweeps as it cleans.

Auntieflo Wed 20-Jul-16 13:23:06

Miep, congratulations then , for getting my son to ' read' at about 2. He saw the advert for ' your flexible friend' , and of course, I immediately thought, genius child, he can read. smile

Not Elgar, Dvorak, although could be wrong, often am!

miep Wed 20-Jul-16 12:57:33

Clement Freud and dog food with Henry (Bloodhound)
Hovis with Elgar (I think, boy pushing bicycle up a cobbled street)
British Gas with the dog, cat and mouse all sitting in front of the fire
The ads for 'Access' (now Mastercard), which I am sorry to say, I wrote
Domestos kills 99% of germs. Dead. (written by a friend of mine)

JackyB Wed 20-Jul-16 12:10:23

Oh and those very tasteul Hanneman Cigarillo ads with the naked girl in the waterfall. If I was round at my boyfriend's his little brother often tried to contrive staying up after 10 pm in the hope of catching one of them!

JackyB Wed 20-Jul-16 12:09:09

Oh yes - the loudest and most memorable was "1001 cleans big big carpets for less than half a crown".

Then I remember the Milky Bar Kid and "There's an awful lot of coffee in Brazil" and "Roses grown on you" (Norman Wisdom) and the Cyril Lord mentioned above, and "Trebor mints are a minty bit stronger! - We used to sing that at school and then add "Stick them in your ear and they'll last a bit longer"

And "So we say out of water on with Nulon" But I could never work out what the second line of that was.

Bellanonna Wed 20-Jul-16 04:15:39

John Collier, John Collier, the Window to Watch. (Mens' outfitters)

As a child, I was horrified to hear that my favourite carpet seller was going out of business.

This is luxury you can afford, by Cyril Lord
Squash it, and it just springs back,
Wash it, and the colour stays fast,
Give it the treatment, the family treatment,
Enkalon is made to last for years and years and years and years and,
This is luxury you can afford, by Cyril Lord!!
