Old ads you remember

Just had our usual 'raucous' sunday family lunch. We got onto the subject of advertisements. I sang 'Opal Fruits, made to make your mouth water' (then the rest of it, lemon, lime, orange..... ) and 'Sorry mate, you're too late, the best peas went to Farrows'! My son sang the washing machine Calgon ad! We were in stitches remembering all the ads we grew up with. Any others?

Mints with a Polar bear on top!

Beattie the little madam ad I think was for Clark’s shoes?

Not sure of the Joe and Petunia ads possibly 1970’s?

Used to love the ad. (for a washing powder), in which a young man is left to wash his own shirt, trails powder all over the kitchen looking for the washing machine.
Used to hate the one (no idea what is was for), where a mother used to settle down to ironing all the babies terry towelling nappies.

Green line mints with the soft chewy centre.

We had Green Line busses in our area . I always wondered what the connection was . ?

Would you risk it for a Swisskit?
Not sure what a Swisskit consisted of.

Curlywurly add with Terry Scott as a schoolboy.

My friend and I used to love the (son) 'oh Mum' and (mother) 'course you can Malcolm' ads for Vicks Sinex and of course the classic Cinzano ones, featuring Joan Collins and Leonard Rossiter.

Anyone else remember the 'Naughty but nice' ad for cream cakes?
I remembered it recently because we went to a 70th birthday bash - old school friend of Dh - who was the ad man at the time who dreamt it up!

There's one I remember that was dire even then (early 60s?) which is probably why I remember it!

Middle aged woman in her slip, washing her hair at the washbasin. With a head full of lather she says brightly, 'The sooner I get this over with, the better - there's Prince's salmon for tea!'

Silvikrin hair spray - is she or isn’t she?

The Hovis ad with the little lad freewheeling down the hill. The name of the piece of music eludes me, but I’ve got an ear worm now as it plays in my head! ?

Joe and Petunia???? Never heard of this one. So I googled it...
it's on YouTube.

One I never saw. Can anyone put a date to it?

Does anyone recall the day on BBC Breakfast Time in the 1980's when Fern Britton introduced the resident cookery expert with the line, 'You can always tell when Glyn Christian is in the studio because of the smell!'

Beattie9 Wed 11-Apr-18 21:17:13

Then there was the little boy who goes into a shop and asks for 'Plumrose Plopped Ham with Chalk!
Or the little girl who says, 'And mummy says when I grow up, I'm going to be a right little madam!' but I can't remember what it was advertising.

Wots the beeer we love the best? Watneys draught Red Barrel, we named our cat Watney as my brother loved the song, many years ago.

Continuing with the alcohol theme, there was a series of ads for Fosters Lager with Paul Hogan, one of which saw him at the ballet where he exclaims, 'Strewth! There's a bloke down there with no strides on!'
And the other two series of ads that included clips from famous movies, cut with new footage to advertise Holsten Pils and the second using the tag line, 'I bet he drinks Carling Black Label!'

“You’ve got an ology? “ British Telecom

Do you have a book on Fly Fishing? Yellow Pages

Train ticket to Dottingham please, “Tunes help you breathe more easily”, sorry forgotten the exact words

Joe and Petunia, Coastguards

The other part of the tag line for Martini was:
'Anytime, anyplace, anywhere!'
I've nicknamed one of the dogs 'Martini' owing to his toilet habits!

Elegran Wed 11-Apr-18 20:07:33

The Boddington's ad where the wife sits at the dressing-table putting froth on her face, and the husband (Nigel Havers?) says, "Ee you smell gorgeous, pet!

annodomini Wed 11-Apr-18 20:02:34

I was going to put in my two penn'orth but when I reviewed the thread, found I'd already done so. I have just ended a meal with an apple - "Nature's toothbrush".

AlieOxon Wed 11-Apr-18 20:01:15

VITE-a-LITE!

Still around and I use it, but never see it advertised....

Greyduster Wed 11-Apr-18 19:34:44

‘It’s the right one, the bright one, it’s Martini!’

Elegran Wed 11-Apr-18 19:10:23

The makers of shampoos Stayblond and Brunitex sponsored the top twenty on Radio Luxemburg. Horace Batchelor's winning football pools system was advertised in between tunes (so why did he need to sell it to others if he could make his fortune by it?)

Beattie9 Wed 11-Apr-18 19:09:29

Does anyone remember the ads for, I believe 'Tuborg lager' in which the film was run backwards showing the 'Czechoslovakian yeast' (an apparent ingredient of the beer) as a cloud that returns to the barman's open palm? Or do I sound as though I've been sampling rather too much of the product?

Marydoll Wed 11-Apr-18 19:06:02

What a great thread. smile. The only think is that I'm now hankering after some of the foods mentioned.

"If you like a lotta chocolate on your biscuit, join our club."

Beattie9 Wed 11-Apr-18 18:58:16

Only just found this thread but it reminded me of a few other ads from the past, including:
'Whitbread Big-Head Trophy Bitter,
The pint that thinks it's a quart!'
Then there was 'Omo (washing powder) with WM7'; 'Super Shell (petrol) with ICA, stop for Super Shell and Go!' and the animated safety film that started with:
'Sir Isaac Newton told us why,
An apple falls down from the sky!'
Sadly, I remember the rest of the verse!

My lot still sing 'I want a Trio and I want one now...'

I've heard that fans recently campaigned to have these choccy biscuits produced again after a gap of many years. I'm hoping to track some down and surprise the DCs at a family get-together in a few weeks time... and look forward to them all bursting into song!
