I think this is just somebody doing a wind up. I wouldn't be in the least surprised if it was an OAP. There was an article in the paper recently that a lot of the trolls on the Internet are older people, especially women who have nothing much going on in their lives. Don't rise to the bait, they then sit back and have a giggle.

I think we are talking to each other as AYP never came back. He/she just wanted to give us some vitriol.

For what it's worth I voted to stay in the EU, and as far as I can tell so did my friends,bar one , and at least she used her vote. Many of my DS's friends didn't bother voting as they assumed we would stay in the EU anyway.

We never had any money when I was bringing up our kids although we worked long hours. I didn't go to university and my sister was the first person to go in our family.

I saved as much as I could and by the time our children went to university I had enough to pay for them, so they came out with very little debt. We've lent them money for cars, deposit on a house. MY DS and DiL have much more disposable income than we did at that age, but they work hard too.

I care for my Dad so he doesn't cost the state more than he has to, and we are frequent baby sitters.

Of course I care about the future, not just for my family's sake but for all those less fortunate. Oh, I could go on, but thanks gransnetters you've already said it better than I could. I've been interested in the replies. Much more eloquent and well informed than AYP, who probably hasn't looked at any.

Yes, it was always obvious that the OP was a wind up but, you know, I guess many of us have heard or read similar things anyway. It is how a lot of youngsters feel We know how hard things were for some of us way back when but we also know that there is little point in trying to convince some younger people who are feeling hard done by, rightly or wrongly. If the younger generation do want it all, right now, well, maybe some of us have ourselves to "blame". I know that I went out of my way to make life as easy as possible for my own children as I didn't have much as a child and just wanted to give them something "better". Add to that the fact that I was divorced and wanted to "make it up" to them to an extent. No scrimping and saving for them - house deposits given willingly although I know they are grateful. No point in telling them about the second hand furniture that was half broken already, about the twin tub washing machine bought for £7 in the small ads. No point in telling them how the sofa collapsed during one of our many parties or how the same washing machine went on fire. Happy memories, lol, but they don't want any of that these days. Their lives are very different to ours.

I know this post is all over the place but what I am trying to say is that I am not outraged by the wind up post, it has helped me think through why I have no reason to feel guilty about what we have now and how long we live using up resources.

There will probably continue to be resentment voiced as a wind up or otherwise but no real harm done.

I so agree with you Anya. This comment is obviously from a very embittered and angry person with their own issues. Probably nothing to do with being in or out of the EU. What a different world it is today!

When I was a school governor, the "in thing" was to do away with competitive sport to spare the feelings of those who did not win . It prompted me to ask how they would learn to be good losers. Brexit has shown they didn't, OYP being a prime example

You seem very angry, AYP. The housing stock is a problem. Our age group did not make a housing shortage. Successive Governments did - none of which I voted for, by the way. Eventually Grandparents will die and these houses you imagine we all have (I do not, and I rent and still dream of owning my own home - too old for a mortgage now) will be passed on to YOU! I voted leave and considered it carefully knowing that my Grandson would be the beneficiary. What on Earth makes you think it was done selfishly? THE EU is crumbling. There are no jobs for young people in Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain. What has the EU done for those countries? We could have been next. At least we have some sort of chance now. Most of us on Gransnet are old enough and wise enough to want the best for future generations. I certainly do.

We have helped to put all 4 of our children on the housing ladder.

We spend a considerable amount of time looking after our grandchildren...unpaid!

We still pay tax in spite of being pensioners.

We both paid considerable amounts of our salaries in National Insurance contributions so surely are entitled to a bit of help with our health problems.

We worked damn hard for the money we have saved. We both had 2 jobs to put our children through university.

Unlike my children, it is 4 years since we managed a holiday.

Go figure, young person! Oh....and don't forget, some day you too will be the older generation ?????

I forgot to add that we both voted remain in the EU. As did everyone we know.
