There was a sugar shortage in about 1974 through panic buying. The local shop where we were living kept it back for favoured friends. My mother sent a bag of sugar through the post. There was also a shortage of potatoes, probably through disease. The children had to go without their Saturday night fish and chips which they ate while watchingDr Who. The eldest behind the sofa!
(In 71 or 72 , newly married, I remember that I bought a lot of sugar and coffee so was a stockpiler. Yes, we were told that they may be scarce or mega expensive.)
liaise I had never heard of Hungarian wine in the seventies. Lager and lime was all my friends & I aspired to. lully my Dad was so 'exotic' he had a Vesta curry every birthday.
Crimplene short dress and pushing a pram. With three bottles of Hungarian wine, bought at the NAAFI, hidden around the baby. The wine cost five shillings and nine pence a bottle. I had never heard of Social Services in those days. Just as well. That baby is now 44 years old. Tempus fugit. iPad doesn't like Latin.
