My hairdryer is 21 years and going strong! What's the oldest appliance in your home?

Tudorrose Thu 20-Oct-16 10:32:22

Not exactly an appliance but I have had my lovely M&S dressing gown for 25 years & wear it nearly every day.washed almost white now from a beautiful pale turquoise. No prizes for guessing where it was made! (not China)

I have a Moulinex hand mixer that has to be over 20 years old and is well used, and a Moulinex electric carving knife that I got for Christmas approx 35 years ago and still carves the turkey. Does Moulinex still exist? On the other hand I've been through many irons - I can't make those last. Does anyone have an old iron?

Gas boiler for 41 years never failed and works a treat though undoubtedly inefficient in the scheme of things........ Believe I'm about to be pressurised into replacement by legislation. When I watch the telly ad 'the boiler's gone on the blink again' I cringe. What poor quality and workmanship are we producing these days?

Lupin - the iron I am using is a cheap steam iron that DS took to Uni in 1993 which is of course 23 years ago. Perhaps it wasn't used for the first 3 years and the rest did it some good !

My Panasonic microwave at least 46 years old - Panasonic couldn't find the serial number when I asked them its age ! My first Cannon cooker lasted 37 years and I loved it. Its Cannon replacement at 16 is on its way out and I have never liked it.

Not an electric appliance but my
Prestige rotary hand whisk , 56 years old, still beats eggs beautifully with a smooth action. Use regularly when do not want to get the electric beater out.

I have a cast iron mincer bought in 1948. Still use it for mincing meat. Saw a similar one in a museum in USA.

pennyh47 Dyson has only been in business for 25 years grin

f77ms I would strongly urge that you go to a local firm, one with a showroom that you can have a look around in, and not one of the big companies or online. Son was ripped off by Moben (since gone) who installed a VERY expensive kitchen but wrecked the walls of the room, the floor, and left the house and garden filthy with rubble and dirt everywhere (S and Dil were both out at work) and took almost a month to remove two skiploads or rubbish from their driveway. Another relative went to a nationwide kitchen and bathroom installer and endured a nightmare for almost two years. People who have used local firms seem to do a lot better. Good luck and enjoy your lovely new kitchen when it comes.

Oh - and my Kenwood toaster is 18 years old and still going strong. Also have a Phillips electric knife that must be 30 years old, and my Kenwood Chef lasted forty years. I have bought another - here's hoping.

'OF' rubbish. Dreadful typist.

My sister finally bought a new washing machine when her kitchen was replaced. She'd had it since she moved into her flat - 40 years ago! We weren't sure what make it was, we thought she should have written to them to let them know.

I find most electrical appliances fail within 5 to 6 years now but we did have a Bang & Olufsen TV that lasted around 24 years.

tigerfangran Thu 20-Oct-16 14:22:29

I have a freezer in the garage that is 49 years old. When we moved 3 years ago I did wonder if it would restart..it did and is still going strong.Fingers and toes crossed.

On a similar topic, yesterday as i struggled to take my very large and heavy Le Cruset 28cm casserole dish out of the oven i thought it's may be time to pass all of my Le Cruset to my DD as i just cant manage it anymore, which of your kitchen essential's will you pass on to your children ?

My sewing machine, 42 years old, bought when I was a student and couldn't afford to buy clothes. I used to buy old curtains at jumble sales and make them into skirts and tops.

fiorentina51 Thu 20-Oct-16 15:53:47

That's reminded me. I have my mother's old Singer sewing machine. It's 52 years old an still works a treat.

I have a steam iron that I bought in 1981; it's a Tefal corded/cordless and I love it dearly.

I do still have my original Kenwood Chef from 1979 but it's had a new motor.

Wobblybits Thu 20-Oct-16 16:48:52

OMG, an iron that lasts more than a couple of years, Mrs P seem to go through iron like hot cakes. Fingers crossed she does like her current steam generator one.

My creda tumbler dryer was bought in 1979. but I do have a hoover floor polisher
( yellow with two turning scrubbing brushes) in the gararage that may or may not be working a wedding present in 1975

Wobblybits Thu 20-Oct-16 17:07:57

Our old Creda tumble dryer lasted for years, we only go rid of it because all the paint had peeled off.

Spangles1963 Thu 20-Oct-16 17:35:07

Not me,but my late DM had a washing machine that kept going for 25 years. She bought it in 1982 and it finally gave up in 2007. It did have minor small repairs along the way though. She also had a fridge that she bought in 1979,was us still going now,37 years on. It has never had any repairs but is looking decidedly shabby now and the ice box (remember those?) is getting beyond a joke. Needs defrosting every 2 weeks. Imagine it will be written off before long.

My Pifco hand mixer which is 40 years old, and was a birthday present. It makes wonderful mashed potato.?

David1968 Thu 20-Oct-16 18:49:23

I had a light-up makeup mirror in 1974. Used it almost daily, then sadly said goodbye to it in 2014. The bulb lasted until then! (New mirror just not as good).
