aubergine? Is it:

Or-bergine ?
Or
Oh-bergine?

Hope to settle my argument with DDIL once and for all grin

aggie Thu 24-Nov-16 16:06:30

I go for the second version , no "r " in that vegetable

tanith Thu 24-Nov-16 16:08:05

Second one for me too.

Ana Thu 24-Nov-16 16:08:33

Well there is, but nearer the end...grin

I say oh as well.

chelseababy Thu 24-Nov-16 16:10:05

Second for me too. Won't a dictionary give the correct pronunciation?

kittylester Thu 24-Nov-16 16:16:10

I pronounce it the 2nd way too but it's illogical as it begins the same as autumn (ortum!) As do Austria (which my PiL pronounced Orstria) and Australia (which they pronounced Ostralia)

I've confused myself now!!

Call it eggplant!! grin

Charleygirl Thu 24-Nov-16 16:19:49

Definitely the second version.

Luckygirl Thu 24-Nov-16 16:26:07

It's ohbergine - because it is derived from French.

M0nica Thu 24-Nov-16 16:45:03

Never heard any one use anything but the second version, which is what I say myself.

rosesarered Thu 24-Nov-16 16:45:47

Oh......definitely ( maybe) grin

aggie Thu 24-Nov-16 16:46:52

I never heard Autumn nor Austria pronounced with a "r" in !!

Grannyknot Thu 24-Nov-16 16:46:59

I say brinjal.

kittylester Thu 24-Nov-16 16:51:53

How do you say autumn then aggie - do you say ohtumn? confused

aggie Thu 24-Nov-16 16:56:23

I say Awetumn , is it not awkward putting an "r" in there ?

Ana Thu 24-Nov-16 16:59:31

Splitting hairs rather, aggie! I don't actually pronounce the 'r' in 'or'...

PamelaJ1 Thu 24-Nov-16 17:00:19

I say oh --when I say autumn I think I pronounce it like awe as in awesome , no r.

Ana Thu 24-Nov-16 17:03:13

I'm pretty sure we all do...

aggie Thu 24-Nov-16 17:13:52

what do you mean Ana ? I pronounce the R in "or" , maybe it's my false teeth getting in the way ! Do you mean awe instead of oh ? just asking

TriciaF Thu 24-Nov-16 17:17:21

The french around here pronounce 'au' as 'or', or even just open 'o'.
Our county town is Auch - usually pronounced 'osh'.

Ana Thu 24-Nov-16 17:22:14

Perhaps it's the Scottish pronunciation, aggie. If I say, for example, 'one or two' there is no 'r' sound.

aggie Thu 24-Nov-16 18:32:36

I am inclined to the rolled "r"s , mind you I left Scotland 70 yrs ago !

Jalima Thu 24-Nov-16 18:48:22

Oh-bergeene (very soft 'g')

Or Eggplant!

Nelliemoser Fri 25-Nov-16 00:15:09

Oh-bergine! Unless you are talking about that much less appetising sounding vegetable the "Egg Plant"

Cosafina Fri 25-Nov-16 10:38:29

Oh-bergine. In the Balearics it's called Oh-ber-Jenny smile

TillyWhiz Fri 25-Nov-16 11:08:10

I speak with a friend in Iowa and we laugh how we pronounce words differently - ours in England seem to come from the French pronounciation whereas Americans follow Italian. And I go for the second choice whereas my friend would say eggplant!
