Jules Howard has started an advent calendar on Twitter. The subject is overlooked nativity animals. First one: donkey louse.

No accounting for taste

Anya Fri 02-Dec-16 08:42:13

Tomorrow the sheep liver fluke no doubt?

The expression "no accounting for taste" seems rather negative to me. Why shouldn't someone be interested enough in entomology to try, through humorous means like this, or otherwise, to get others interested too?

I realise the phrase might not have been said negatively. Just pointing out that it does come across a bit negative.

Day two is Ambrosia Beetle Larvae, potential eaters of wooden mangers in the Middle East.

Teetime Fri 02-Dec-16 08:48:46

E Coli
Acenetobacter
Clostridia
etc etc

bacteria have feelings too (!) no they don't stop being silly.

I'm sure David Attenborough could put a positive spin on the donkey louse.
What about all the little rodents scurrying about in the stable?

whitewave Fri 02-Dec-16 09:07:02

i am sure the donkey would find it quite negative.

Anya Fri 02-Dec-16 09:12:46

Donkeys have feelings too!

whitewave Fri 02-Dec-16 09:14:43

Exactly! and they have enough to put up with as it is especially in the Middle East it seems to me.

Anya Fri 02-Dec-16 09:57:10

And getting tails pinned on them.

Anya Fri 02-Dec-16 10:01:08

Sorry to be fasicious - donkeys do get treated very badly sad

HootyMcOwlface Fri 02-Dec-16 10:42:15

I'd love a donkey. Don't think he'd get through the cat flap though.

Guardia. A very nasty parasite that I have experienced from lake swimming. Looks like Zebedee from The Magic Roundabout under a microscope. Very cute. Not!

ellarussell Fri 02-Dec-16 11:37:10

I nominate the spiders in the rafters.

Anya Fri 02-Dec-16 12:03:19

I feel an 'alternative' nativity play coming on.....The Animals the Bible Forgot!

JackyB Fri 02-Dec-16 12:16:11

I think donkeys are beautiful (as long as they keep their mouths shut).

I wonder what other things will turn up on this calendar. There will have been mice and rats in the stable, but I'm not biologist enough to think up 24 creature that would have been found there.

Christinefrance Fri 02-Dec-16 12:32:44

Love that idea Anya, how will it be cast?

Anya Fri 02-Dec-16 15:06:14

Well if any previous nativities are anything to go I will be the back end of the louse!

Anya Fri 02-Dec-16 15:10:54

Or we could invite politicians to audition.

Bed bugs, liver flukes, lice, leeches, fleas, rats, mice, tapeworms, mosquitoes, locusts?

Any parasites or disease carrying animals, blood suckers or similar would be part of the cast.

pollyperkins Fri 02-Dec-16 15:35:30

My granddaughter age 18 months had to have a spider costume for the nursery nativity play. Im sure there would be spiders in a stable. Im not sure that she had any clue what ws going on!

Cherrytree59 Fri 02-Dec-16 16:44:33

My 3yr old grandson loves going on bug safari. His grandad had build him a bug hotel in the garden.

I'm sure there would be pretty little moths round the candles.

Did they have candles then or was it torchesconfused

Ana Fri 02-Dec-16 17:00:59

Not battery-operated ones, I don't thnk! grin

I've only just looked at this thread, was still feeling a bi queasy about yesterday's sheep maggots...

widgeon3 Fri 02-Dec-16 17:24:08

polly perkins.... were there children from Ghana in your gDs class?. When we first arrived in Ghana one Christmas years ago,
the decorations were all up.... illuminated cobwebs stretched across the main road with a large black spider skulking at either end. Ananse, the naughty spider is a huge character in Ghanaian folklore
