To me that would be a big waste of money .... but if that's what you like I hope you enjoy it I m sure you will Tanith wonderful present if you like posh stuff
Never even seen any of those places but would feel like a fish out of water so wouldn't want to go some people it suits some it doesn't I m in your camp Belles haha

Well it was as good as expected I have pics but I can't post them on this thread . I never go anywhere so 'posh' but trust me the staff couldn't be nicer or more skilled making everyone feel totally welcome and at ease. The food was fab but perfectly managable so you try everything but aren't stuffed, the tiny sandwiches were so dainty and you were offered more. They pour the tea for you and anticipated empty cups. I don't drink but made an exception for the champagne which actually didn't taste like cats wee . We didn't want to leave .

I've had afternoon tea at the Ritz and it wasn't at all expensive. It was only the ordinary one with tea as I don't like champagne. Oh it was such a lovely experience though and a real treat. Hope you have enjoyed yours

Did you leave your DH at home to make himself a mug of "buuilders tea" and a doorstep sandwich?!

Charleygirl I really don't know the answer to your question regarding coffee but I can't see them refusing to be honest. The gift was for my daughter and myself DH not invited we offer to pay extra for him to come but he declined saying no the two of you have a lovely afternoon. He stayed home and and pasty and beans for his tea . I would never pay the amount of money that it costs to go again but I would buy it for a special treat for someone as it really is a special experience.
The toilet were art deco and so OTT the lovely Italian attendant turns on the taps at just the right temperature for you and hands you a warmed one use towelling hand towel.

Oh, an Italian attendant! Perhaps the one we met - English, probably a year or two older than me - has retired. Perhaps she's on Gransnet, who knows? So glad you enjoyed your afternoon.

Afternoon tea is very popular in the West of Scotland. Three friends and I are working our way through them!
P.S. All so far have offered the leftovers as takeaway.

I hate shopping so when I lived in London I used to go to Brown's for tea to recover from the horror of it. That was always rather pleasant and a bit self-indulgent. I expect they did serve Champagne but it wasn't alcohol I craved but a cup or two of Earl Grey and to slip off my shoes under the table.

My youngest daughter and I love the experience of afternoon tea and have been treating ourselves for several years .

The Savoy is wonderful , 1 Aldwych is very modern but my favourite is The Berkeley where they serve a Pret a Portea - fashion themed . The most beautiful China, service is impeccable and the cakes and sandwiches are amazing and they jus keep on coming till you say stop.

It's not everyone's cup of tea but we love it.... next stop Ice Cream Tea at the Dorchester .

NanaandGrampy you are right, the china was to die for my daughter asked if you could buy it but its apparently exclusive to Claridges I've even looked on Amazon to see if they have any there but no luck so far I was going to try and get her some as a gift.

That's my ambition to have tea at Claridges

Afternoon tea is very popular in this neck of the woods, too. Even our local garden centre does it and it's VERY reasonable, £6.45 for tiny sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, and little cakes, all eaten on comfortable chairs in a sunny conservatory, served by friendly ladies. Of course, you can go to posher places and pay twice that much if you want to. It's a nicely civilised thing to do IMHO even if DH says it's 'bah humbug'.

DH's cousin was a doorman at Claridges. He was a wonderful source of Chanel carrier bags because customers used to go to the loo and put all their new clothes on and leave the bags behind. When he came to visit he brought the Charbonnel and Walker chocolates that they place in the bedrooms.

Thanks everyone we had a really memorable time, I do agree that the cost for 'tea' is horrendous but for a once in a lifetime gift I think it was well meant by my lovely grandson and his girlfriend.
whitewave I'm posting a link and yes Claridges is the Art Deco hotel it was beautiful even the Art Deco toilets I was a bit too embarrassed to take photos of the decor it was fantastic though.

tanith I'm so pleased you and your DD had a wonderful day. I must try to remember that idea to treat my sister for her 65th birthday. The only problem is she's a few years younger than me and I might have forgotten by then!

It reminded me of a spa day I had as a Christmas gift from my DS a few years ago. So unexpected and such indulgent bliss!

Now as so many of you have visited these rather glam venues for Afternoon Tea you may have ventured into TheIvy which I hear is an ultra posh establishment. My reason for mentioning it is that where I live in Bucks we are going to have an Ivy Brassiere in our High Street well being nosey I will definitely go for morning coffee, I'm already saving. So come on has anyone visited this establishment ? I believe there is one in Bristol too.

I've been to the Ivy in Covent Garden it's very smart. Food is posh version of everyday stuff like Shepherds pie. It's good for celebrity spotting, but when I was there the only person I recognised was John McCrirrick. I had the best baked Alaska ever there- they flambeed it at the table.

Gosh you take me back in time Suzied baked Alaska. I will definitely save my pennies to go there. I suspect it will be months before it opens, it used to be the Clark's shoe shop !

By the way I thought your hair looked lovely on the other thread.
