I hope you enjoy thoroughly. I have been to Harrod's and Fortnum's for afternoon tea. Plus Barkers in Cardiff.

Harrods was best, 5 of us went for a birthday and we ate cakes galore. We were all so stuffed we all went home to have a nap - at our respective homes either.

Fortnum's was very genteel, beautiful china, grand piano being played gently. Smaller cakes though.

Now if your purse is feeling a bit under pressure after Xmas and you fancy Tea out go to Bill's I took two separate groups of friends there for my 70th last year. You get two warm crunchy scones with a choice of jam plus thick Devon cream with a pot to tea. In addition a light as a feather Victoria sponge slice. I can't remember the exact price but it is under £10 and for a few pounds more you can have a glass of hedgerow sparkling wine with a large blackberry in it. I think if there are more than 6 of you, one of the party is given a free Tea. The staff were lovely and gave me a tin of Earl Grey for a present.

Oh come on bellsisabelle afternoon tea is now the 'in' thing, loads of places do it, even up here in the far north.

How fabulous Tanith what a super afternoon I am so envious its somewhere I have always longed to go I must really try and get there someday.

bellsisabelle, I'm really not fussy about who pours my champagne, as long as they don't spill any.

Just before Christmas,DD2 had afternoon tea at The Savoy with a friend who has coeliac disease. They provided a wonderful selection of gluten free cakes, sandwiches etc.

She sent me these pics just to make me feel

It's just the afternoon tea thing... I mean, nobody really eats it anymore do they? And waiters with white gloves pouring the champagne. (shudder)

I've been to Claridge's three times, not for afternoon tea but for lunch when Gordon Ramsay's was there. It wasn't dear at all - about £30 for 3 courses! - and it was just a wonderful experience, not at all pretentious. The lady in charge of the loos dried off our coats, brollies and shopping while we ate, and we had a long chat with her - she said she loved working there and the staff were all part of a big happy family . And when my friend asked the water waiter (yes, really!) for tap, he started off by saying "I'm terribly sorry, Madame...". We thought he was going to refuse us, but he continued "I'm afraid I can't serve you any of your delicious Yorkshire tap water, but I'm sure I can find you an excellent London vintage".

I think I would find it too pretensious. But that's just me.

My daughter took me to Claridge's for a champagne afternoon tea as a 'thank you' treat a couple of years ago. It was a really special experience, although one that I would probably never have paid for myself. The couple at the next table were also a mother and daughter, there for exactly the same reason and we got on famously.

Never been to anywhere like that.

Claridges is the best. You have to try the loos as well. Hope they've still got their amazing tree up.

Sounds fabulous tanith. I think under normal circumstances, ie not a gift, one would need to take out a mortgage to dine there! Have a great time.
