Dry January - how are you doing?

It's day 25 and I was wondering how those who started Dry January were doing? I finding it ok, if a little boring. It's book group tonight in a pub, I would usually have a glass of wine, but tonight I'll have a lime and soda.☹️. I haven't noticed any great benefits, I am still eating the Christmas chocolates, so I don't think I'll have saved any calories.
I've heard of other people doing Runuary ( going for a run every day in January) and Veganuary ( vegan for January). I wonder what will be thought up for February?

See you in August, OGM? grin

Oldgreymare Wed 25-Jan-17 23:21:32

Badly! Thinking of giving up on the idea and going for Feb instead, or maybe March; hang on, what about April? hmm

I'm not a big drinker but thought I would test my willpower by doing dry January. So far so good despite a few social occasions this month but it is so BORING! Plus I've put 2lbs on hmm! Must be the Christmas chocolates we've just finished. Now, that's something I'd never do - go without chocolates or sweets for a month!

I think the point of Dry January is to have an alcohol free period of time, to give your body a rest and a chance to regenerate. It shows you can control what can easily become a habit ( it's wine O' Clock!). I think it's a challenge as I do enjoy a glass or two. I will cut down after Janaury though, and try to only drink at weekends.

As a relative newcomer to GN I thought it was opinion/input that mattered...i.e someone starts a thread re a downsize in house..we may NOT all be doing that ourselves!! ....but offer opinions.....?

Indinana Wed 25-Jan-17 20:52:35

Haha grin. Now that's a game I've never played. I don't think I know the rules. Perhaps you'd care to enlighten me?

Ana Wed 25-Jan-17 20:38:53

I don't think I'll reply to that. I'm sure you've got PMs to send...

Indinana Wed 25-Jan-17 20:35:50

I don't see any intimation of smugness in my post. Of course, it may sound that way to you, but I can't be responsible for the way you interpret my posts.

Are you doing dry January Ana?

Ana Wed 25-Jan-17 20:33:30

Indinana's accusation was harsh, sue1169.

sue1169 Wed 25-Jan-17 20:28:18

Oooops pistols at dawn....rather harsh Ana!!!

Ana Wed 25-Jan-17 20:20:03

No, Indinana, I don't do that.

I do, however, think it sounds rather smug to post on a thread like this saying that you don't need to give up alcohol because you're so abstemious anyway. Especially when some are finding it difficult.

Indinana Wed 25-Jan-17 20:06:43

Given that it was your first post on this thread, it seems to me, Ana, that you read through threads, even though you are not really taking part, just so you can jump on anyone who isn't, in your view, 'playing the game' exactly according to your rules.

Indinana Wed 25-Jan-17 20:04:06

And why do you always have to make this sort of point Ana?

Blinko Wed 25-Jan-17 20:02:36

Can't see the point for those who drink in moderation (which might be two or three times a week). And for those who drink heavily (eg. a bottle a night) though it might be worth doing for health reasons, would they? Could they?

What's it all about? confused

Ana Wed 25-Jan-17 19:24:04

Why do people bother posting on this thread if they're not doing Dry January? confused

Indinana Wed 25-Jan-17 18:46:57

I never do dry January because I hardly ever drink anyway. I have the odd glass of wine now and then, but it really is quite rare. I don't think I've had any alcohol this month (though I have used it in cooking, risottos, beef casseroles and so on).

pen50 Wed 25-Jan-17 18:20:18

No problem sticking to dry January here. I'd definitely had a bit too much over the run up to Christmas and New Year so I was quite pleased to give my liver some time off. Haven't felt the need to compensate with food, so I have dropped a few pounds, which is nice. I will go back to the odd glass at weekends, but I don't intend to drink on weeknights. I've laid in some stocks of zero alcohol beer in anticipation (drinking them now might lower my resistance to continuing with dry January once I'm reminded of the taste of beer.)

Greyduster Wed 25-Jan-17 17:07:33

It was the boeuf stroganoff wot dun it for me, I'm afraid. There was a bottle of Chardonnay minding its own business in the fridge and it seemed criminal not to introduce them! I rarely drink anything unless there is also food involved and then it is usually only a single glass so. I don't feel mega guilty about it, even though I managed to do it last year.

namo Wed 25-Jan-17 16:54:26

I'm finding it really hard. I'd got into the habit of needing a drink too often. I felt uncomfortable with myself. I'm doing Dry January for my own self esteem really. To prove to myself that I am in control. Just had another cup of tea. Not the same. Hope my liver appreciates.

sue1169 Wed 25-Jan-17 15:49:40

Well my thinking is that at my age..64..a month is a long time to deprive myself of something that I enjoy ...a nice glass of red!? I love the look of it.the sound of pouring it..and the taste...feet up.relax...sip?

David1968 Wed 25-Jan-17 15:46:14

As I mentioned when the "Dry January" thread came up earlier this month, DH and I decided to go for a "Drier January" as we knew we'd a better chance of success with this. Definitely have cut down!

mollie Wed 25-Jan-17 14:33:45

I'm doing fine, not missing alcohol at all. Started without knowing about Dry January, wanted to see if it made a difference. Not sure if it has but I don't feel worse so that's ok.

NonnaW Wed 25-Jan-17 13:46:29

Did it ok last year, failed miserably this year. Oh well, try again another time.

TheGlovers1 Wed 25-Jan-17 12:02:41

I failed on day 6 ! Went to the pub and said to my husband I will have a Diet Coke ,he bought me my favourite cider instead and it was rude not to drink it. Oh well there's always next year!

Daddima Wed 25-Jan-17 12:00:53

Ruthyo, you just beat me to it! Dry Martini too, for a wee change.
