Hugs are nice when they're spontaneous and affectionate - but not when they're a social obligation. Now I'm getting older, I also dislike patronising hugs from young people who are in positions of authority. They always call you 'dear' as well, which I hate. I may be old, but I'm not senile, and I'm not a dear. I'm a vitriolic old bat, and proud of it!
Wetherspoons to become a bit quieter?

That said, I hate being hugged by people I've only just met. If it's an American thing, it must also be American to tell people forthwith that you do NOT want to be hugged, because I used to see that all the time.
