My husband has just asked if you can still buy Andrews Liver Salts, for no apparent reason and we've just had a funny five minutes reminiscing about the tonics that "fortified the over 40s" . How many remember Phyllosan?

Auntieflo Thu 09-Feb-17 21:00:42

And Sanatogen tonic wine !

Chewbacca Thu 09-Feb-17 21:08:52

For my 40th birthday many many moons ago one "friend" bought me a bottle of Phyllis and because "it fortifies the over 40's"! Maybe 40 years olds are fortified enough these days,

Chewbacca Thu 09-Feb-17 21:09:33

Phyllosan not Phyllis fgs!

I suffered from constipation as a child, and I was dosed with a nice tasting, white,yoghurt-like medicine called something like Petrolager ?

Chewbacca Thu 09-Feb-17 21:10:52

Do you remember PLJ, the drink that was supposed to help you lose weight? Never worked for me!

Angib Thu 09-Feb-17 21:11:47

That's what we were laughing about. I don't think many 40 year olds would need "fortifying" these days. How times change.

Chewbacca Thu 09-Feb-17 21:26:40

Don't remember Petrolager Joanna but it sounds wicked! Did it do any good I wonder!
When my DC were small, I used to give them some kind of tonic. Orange flavour, in a brown bottle. Can't remember the name now. It was supposed to "build them up and encourage a healthy appetite ". Anyone else remember this?

Christinefrance Thu 09-Feb-17 21:45:17

I remember something called Isogel for constipation, it was granules dissolved into a gel and disgusting.

SueDonim Thu 09-Feb-17 21:51:56

Was that Minadex, Chewbacca? My mum used to give it to us. Also vile Scotts Emulsion and cod liver oil & malt was another. Yuk! She also gave us Parrishes Food, which was to stimulate the appetite. It had some sort of poison in It! shock

SueDonim Thu 09-Feb-17 21:57:43

Although, disappointingly, this article debunks the poison story. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1113565/

Ana Thu 09-Feb-17 22:04:23

Or Metatone, Chewbacca? You can still buy that.

Chewbacca Thu 09-Feb-17 22:06:02

Minadex! That's it, thanks Sue,I've been racking my brains trying to think of that! You don't see it in the shops anymore so perhaps that's been banned too. Don't recall Parrishes Food. Did that make poo go black, like Minadex?
Do young mums give their babies Rose Hip Syrup, I wonder? That was all the rage 40 years ago too.

Chewbacca Thu 09-Feb-17 22:08:46

Hmm Metatone, no I think the one I used to buy was Minadex, but I do recall Metatone. Don't need either these days to be honest, my appetite needs suppressing, not building up! More in need of PLJ these days!blush

grannyqueenie Thu 09-Feb-17 22:21:22

I remember giving mine Minadex, our GP recommended it when I was worried about my daughter being exhausted when she started school. I remember having rose hip syrup as a child, I loved it but didn't much like the Syrup of Figs that my mum dished out on a eeekly basis!

MiniMouse Thu 09-Feb-17 22:31:43

eeekly basis grannyqueenie?!! I bet syrup of figs did cause a few eeek moments grin

ginny Thu 09-Feb-17 22:37:30

I remember Minadex. Anyone recall Vitapoint(e). ? It was a sort of gel that you put on your hands and rubbed through your hair for shine I relieve. A forerunner of today's hair styling gels perhaps.

Chewbacca Thu 09-Feb-17 22:41:19

grin MimiMouse!

Chewbacca Thu 09-Feb-17 22:42:46

Yes! I remember Viatpointe Ginny, it was good stuff too! Now that my hair resembles wire wool I could use some!

Jalima Thu 09-Feb-17 23:08:13

Vitapoint was a kind of cream if I remember correctly.
My hair has gone very dry lately, Vitapoint would revive it.
I wonder if they still make it. I have tried a little Argan Oil but that's best put on then washed off otherwise it goes quite greasy.

callgirl1 Thu 09-Feb-17 23:08:40

I was using Vitapointe until a year ago, now I can`t find it anywhere. If it`s been discontinued it`s only recently.

Jalima Thu 09-Feb-17 23:09:08

They still make it - available from several outlets including some on Amazon.

Elrel Thu 09-Feb-17 23:19:33

In 1960 in my first job I had a tummy upset. The kindly deputy head advised me to buy Doctor Collis Brown's Chlorodine, a tiny brown bottle of brown liquid, and put 3 drops into an egg cup of warm water. And sip it. It certainly hit the spot and I immediately felt better, warm and happy.
It was morphine, used in WWI and, oddly, is no longer on sale!!

Jalima Thu 09-Feb-17 23:23:07

Doctor Collis Brown's was rather nice, my DF swore by it for a 'funny tummy'.
I remember Kaolin and Morphine too

Chewbacca Thu 09-Feb-17 23:24:52

Can you still get Kaolin & Morphine Jalima? That was pretty good for an upset tummy.
