Nanna or Nana?

I live in England and have always used 'Nanna' but 'Nana' seems to have become more popular. Which is correct?

I am called Nannie! I was asked what I would like to be called and I said no way was I to be called Grandma or Granny! I cannot stand either of those and as I was a young grandmother! To be called either of those didn’t appeal!

There is no “correct” name for a Gran - granny, grandma, nana, nanna, nanny, whatever.
I am Granny to 3 and Janny to 3 other grandchildren.
As the saying goes, I don’t mind what you call me, as long as you call me smile

I’m nanna to my grandkids but my grandkids call inlaws mums gran and granny. I guess it depends on where you brought up or what you heard. I always called my grandparents Nan and nanna. But in my family because we all get different names grandkids don’t get confused when talking on the phone etc

I am Gran or Granny, different GCs use both. I don't mind which they call me as long as it isn't fat

I`m Grandma to my grandchildren and nanny to my step grandchildren.

Nanna, as my nanna before me, I dont really know why but idont like the Nana version

Redhead56 Fri 15-Apr-22 11:42:07

Both my grandmas were referred to by surname it was ridiculous when I think about it. I am nanny L but most times naughty nanny L because I often say No to their demands.

AGAA4 Fri 15-Apr-22 11:38:50

I am a proud Nana and it doesn't matter one jot what your GCs call you.

TrueBigMomma Fri 15-Apr-22 11:31:16

It matters if you want to spell it correctly. I've slways used 'Nanna'. If it was 'Nana' it'd be pronounced like ba'na(r)na'. The single 'n' means the a would be prounced 'ar'. Just saying...... ?

I'm definitely a Nana, as was my Mum and her Mum.

My DH is Grampy ( you are the first person Katek who has one too smile).

Funnily enough both my Mum and Nana's husband were known as Nandad !

I am supposed to be Granny, but Gdd, not yet 2, can't say Gs yet so I'm Nanny for now. Funnily enough I never thought I'd like being Nanny but I'm quite happy with it.
Dh should be Grandpa but is BA-Pa at the moment, and very happy with it.

Katek Sat 11-Mar-17 13:01:16

I'm a Nanna as was my mother. DH is Grampy

My grandmothers were both Nanna, and my mother is Nanna to my DC. We haven't worked out what the great-grandchildren should call her yet.

When I see "Nana" I think of the dog in Peter pan. And pronounce it Nar-nar. The double "n" shortens the first "a".

Whatever grandparents are called often just seems to evolve! My mother was Nana to my DGC and my MIL was Grandma. For all this generation we seem to be Nana with first name. My DGC just call me Nana as I look after them the most. The spelling doesn't seem to matter though I think I started mine following Nana, the dog who looked after the Darling children in Peter Pan.

My youngest DGD having just learned to read delights in calling me Anan which she discovered was Nana spelled backwards!

Daddima Fri 10-Mar-17 13:26:32

My grandparents were both grannies ( granny C and granny B) . My children's grandparents were the " Isobel gran" and the " Mary gran".

I am Gran first name, the Bodach is B.

BlueBelle Fri 10-Mar-17 13:18:59

I m a Nana and much prefer that, when they were small I was a Nanny but that changed to Nana as they got older I couldn't care less whether it's got one N or two
To me Grandma sounds very posh and older I think the Queen must be grandma or grandmama Grandmother sounds very formal and elderly to my ears
My own were Mums mum was Nanny and Dads mum was Granny

It really doesn't matter does it it's all relative to your own family and you are what your used to being called

MawBroon Fri 10-Mar-17 13:17:36

I do think ihaving all these words for grandmothers can be confusing for young children who may not realise that when the Nursery worker says Nanny she means Granny or Grandma . My little DGC have a daily nanny for the days DD works and younger DGS once referred to his "other Granny " Thinking he means DD's MIL I asked if he meant Granny Jan, "No," he said, "the Granny who takes me to Nursery" , (I.e.Lisa)
I don't think the young woman in question would have felt flattered to be equated to a Granny!!

Grannybags Fri 10-Mar-17 12:54:58

My Mum died 4 weeks before my GD was born born and as she was Granny that is what I was called. I always wanted to be Granny though, so I'm happy!

goldengirl Fri 10-Mar-17 11:19:44

I'm Grandma but I had a Nana - and a Bompa!

M0nica Fri 10-Mar-17 10:49:52

I am grandma as were my mother, grandmother etc etc. It is the same with the other grandma.

I think it is just a question of personal choice and local tradition.

TerriBull Fri 10-Mar-17 10:13:30

I'm nana because that's what I called my own grandmas, one was known as "Wimbledon nana" and the other "Sussex nana". However, my little grandson of late has started to call me grandma, which I have to confess I quite like. My mother always called her remaining grandmother grandma, I like it in an old fashioned sort of way.

Badenkate Fri 10-Mar-17 10:00:56

Sorry anno, but just the thought of being called nanna sends a shudder through me.

rosesarered Fri 10-Mar-17 09:59:16

I'm a Grandma, but yesterday in Sainsburys saw a huge display of Mothers Day and Nanas presents, all very flowery and cutiepie with mugs that say I Love You Nana, alao jugs, cushions etc and all with that spelling.grin Does that help?

annodomini Fri 10-Mar-17 09:43:09

Oh, what does it matter? Whatever your GC call you, it's the relationship that counts.

Granny anno
