I was 9lbs 12oz at birth attributed by the midwife to mother having spent most of the pregnancy in bed (rest cure she had TB). I have spent my life battling with my weight- is it connected probably not. How about everyone else?

(This came up because I just saw a photograph of a new born who weighed 8lbs and he looked gigantic I must have been a fright).

I was a month early and 5lb 12 oz at birth. My mother always said she was the biggest woman on the ward (she was 5 foot 9 - tall for the 1940's - and a size 16) with the smallest baby. And a girl to boot! The son she wanted arrived three years later.

I was always small and skinny until the menopause and a subsequent bout of depression. I don't think HRT and anti depressants helped the weight which piled on at the time. Now I don't need to take any medication - but am still fighting the flab!

My DS was 21" long, weight 7lbs 2ozs - a chubby baby, but in school very slim ( still slim at 43yrs old), whereas DD was 18-19" long, weight 6lbs, round and cuddly as she grew, and has always been heavier than her big brother ( 'heavy bones ' blamed on DH side of the family!). I was just under 7lbs born, smallish in height (mother's family)until puberty hit, and I've had weight issues ever since. DH slim as a lath at 71-not fair, is it ??!angry

I was less than 4 lbs and expected to die because of it! Here I am 70 years later- fit healthy and normal weight!

grannyJillyT Thu 06-Jul-17 10:52:35

I weighed 5lbs, you should see me now Lol! grin

mags1234 Thu 06-Jul-17 10:55:34

4 lb 14. I'm five foot eight, and tho skinny as a child, have had to battle with being overweight since!

lovebeigecardigans1955 Thu 06-Jul-17 11:31:35

I weighed 4 1/2 lbs at birth, my (non-identical) twin sister was 5 lbs. I came 20 minutes after and was a breech. We were 6 weeks early and spent the same amount of time in an incubator.
Mum went to hospital due to high blood pressure and she always said that having to clamber up onto the high hospital bed brought on her contractions!
Mum as a child was a healthy and slim weight but she got middle age spread - as have my sister and I. If we did all the right things - more activity and less food no doubt we'd be slimmer BUT it would be a constant battle.

I weighed in at 8lbs 2ozs, but was 22 inches long!
Grew like a weed, and was a very skinny 5ft 10in eleven year old! I was grabbed for my Grammar school netball team pretty quickly!
Have shrunk height wise, but gained width wise over the years, could eat anything I wanted without ever going over 9st, until pregnancy when I gained weight at an alarming rate.
I don't blame my weight gain on my birth weight, it's because I eat too much, I'm a little piggy! ???

I was 8lb 4oz at.birth and i have weighed 9st approx since adulthood. My daughter now 41 weighed 9lb 10oz and is a slim size 12..my son weighed 10lb 3oz and he is a slim 38 year old. He never stopped eating as a child but was never even chubby once past toddlerhood. He still packs away an amazing amount of food. I do think it's genetic, my father was slim all his life and never worried about how much he ate. None of use has ever needed to diet.

Its interesting isn't it but I don't think we will be publishing our learned paper any time soon. smile

I was 51b at birth and I really believe my mum kept feeding me to 'fatten me up' - she should not have bothered I did that quite well on my own hence I've always struggled with weight! My twin DS and DD were 6lbs 7oz and 6lbs 8oz back in the mid 70's DS is like a beanpole and DD is constantly struggling to keep her weight down. All down to genes I reckon!

Tegan2 Thu 06-Jul-17 12:18:54

I was premature and very small when I was born. I've struggled with my weight for most of my life [have been on a diet for 50 years!]. However it all started with me going on a diet when I was 16 to try to lose weight off my chubby legs. Had there been better information back then with regards to 'diet' rather than 'dieting' and gyms to go to where you could concentrate on toning up various parts of your body, I don't think I would have ended up with my weight constantly going up and down; I'm sure the dieting just ruined my metabolism.

Rosina Thu 06-Jul-17 12:28:48

I was one month premature and weighed 51b. Skinny until tonsils removed (none of us had them after about seven as I recall!) and then struggled with weight until I was about sixteen - fortunately it all fell off and I was svelte until mid fifties when I fear my metabolism packed up very abruptly and I am now much heavier than in my twenties.

eddiecat78 Thu 06-Jul-17 12:55:48

Daughter was 4lbs 14 though full term. Throughout childhood it was a battle to get her to eat because she was so fussy and I worried about her being underweight. In her early 20s she went through a very bad patch and comfort ate and is now clinically obese.
I get very cross when people make comments about overweight adults and assume they were over-fed as children

Lilylilo Thu 06-Jul-17 13:59:32

I do think a lot of kids today don't get enough exercise tho, my children, even tho they were really heavy babies, always walked to school, from primary to 6th form college, played lots of sport, rode horses and bikes and didn't sit around much. I think too many children today hole up in their bedrooms with their screens!!!

My Mum reminds me every so often of how enormous a baby was and what a terrible time she had with me weighing in at just over 8 lbs. I know she was fairly petite, but I don't think 8lbs is that gigantic.

Mrsdof Thu 06-Jul-17 15:15:46

I was 8lb and arrived just in time for breakfast. Never missed a meal since!! grin

Nanannotgrandma Thu 06-Jul-17 15:51:12

I was 3lb 2 oz in the 1950's and have been large all my adult life. But a skinny child. My Mum was 10 lb at birth and 7st and size 10 all her adult life. She didn't eat, just smoked and drank tea. I eat!

W11girl Thu 06-Jul-17 16:03:13

I've no idea what my birth weight was. I don't believe birth weight has anything to do with the size of a person later in life. What you put in your mouth does however!

Craftycat Thu 06-Jul-17 17:02:19

I was 7lbs but still size 16 now. Ok size 12 for most of my life but bigger now older.
I had 2 sons 10.5 &10.8
Both very tall but not overweight.

watermeadow Thu 06-Jul-17 17:08:38

All the babies in my family have been larger than average (8lbs up to 10lbs 9ozs) and late, except the lone boy among nine girls, who was a bit early.
My midwife daughter says babies are getting bigger rapidly because so many mothers are obese.
I weighed 8lbs 1oz at birth, exactly the same as my own first baby. I am shortish and fat, eldest daughter is tall and slim.

moobox Thu 06-Jul-17 17:08:44

4lb (premature) but now overweight

GracesGranMK2 Thu 06-Jul-17 17:23:50

I was 3lb 6oz, one of twins but sadly my twin died hours after our birth. My mother had already lost one child, had my brother who survived and then lost twins at six months followed by loosing my twin.

It certainly affected my life. My mother still worries about me over-much and I am rapidly approaching 70! She was basically told to take me home but not to expect too much. I had double pneumonia twice during my first year and the hope seems to have got thinner at that point. They hadn't reckon with my mum! However, I did get used to checking with my father if my mother said I had been ill because however it affected me it made her prone to exaggerate any illness. I have a great reluctance to tell her if I even have a cold to this day. I love her dearly but I can't bear the exaggeration.

My late sister and myself were about the same birth weight, 8lbs 7ozs. She was two years older. We grew up with completely different body shapes, she was slim to the point of skinny all her life and I have always had problems with staying a reasonable weight. Didn't do my confidence a lot of good when well meaning aunts asked where I had got my figure from since both parents were slim. Our younger brother weighed in at over 10lbs and has to be very careful about his weight too. So birth weight hasn't really been much of an indicator in our family!

M0nica Thu 06-Jul-17 20:54:11

After my 9lb baby, also two weeks over due and induced, was born I was told I would be tested for diabetes if I had another large baby. Number 2 arrived on due date and weighed 8lbs. I have never shown any signs of diabetes during pregnancy or since and it does not run in my family, however my tiny paternal grandmother, about 5 foot tall with size 3 feet, had 11 children most of them on the large size.

I was 9lb 8oz at birth and until menopause my adult 'stats' were 5ft 6in and 7st 7lb.

My sons were both 8lb 8oz and 22 inches but comeplerly different body shapes at birth! One was rounded and chubby and the other was as scrawny as a skinned rabbit. The chubbie one is now 6ft and thin as a rake and the scrawny one is 6ft 4in and thin as a rake.

My girls were both around 7lb, one is 5ft 6in and 9st, the other is 5ft 4in and 7.5st.
