My dear old mum always produced a nice pud after our main course. It has become a habit I find hard to break, although now I try to restrict myself to plain yoghurt, fruit and a scattering of almonds.

Do you always have a pud ? Which are your favourites ?

I like rice pudding with a teaspoon of black currant jam. [smlle]

We always had puddings as a child but now we rarely do as so aware of weight gain.

Love apple pie or crumble, and my all time favourite has got to be golden syrup sponge with creamy custard!!!

Yes we always had puddings too, loved steamed apple pudding with lots of custard like travelsafar
Also crumbles, rice pudding made with evaporated milk, baked egg custard. Nothing very healthy there but hey ho they were yummy smile

We just have fresh fruit with a plain yogurt topping on a few occasions a month we might share a small bowl of ice cream.

I love puddings but am wracked with guilt if I eat one except a Xmas or birthday.

Yes I remember my grandma's old fashioned steamed puddings I have lots of lovely memories of my mother making them too, although they tended to be occasional, which made them more of a treat. We did have rice pudding fairly frequently, I remember the lovely nutmeg sprinkled on the top, I did it for my own children when they were young, delicious, unlike the vile stuff the school forced down our necks sad I do a proper pudding if we have guests. Things such as Pavlova, Lemon Meringue Pie, Banoffee Pie, Summer Pudding, Crumble. Other than that we don't have a pudding, aside from a few strawberries or a nectarine (my favourite fruit) I do love puddings though but unfortunately they tend to be calorificsad

I have puddings most days, but its mostly berries or other fruit and Greek yogurt.

PoshGran Mon 24-Jul-17 09:15:37

Most often nowadays we have fresh fruit. High days & holidays might find frozen fruit fool with home-made almond shortbread or mincemeat streusal on the menu. Party time might just involve a huge fruit salad or Tipsy Ginger Cake (ginger snap anyone?)

Standard fare with DC was/is "Wait & See" pudding.
My favourite childhood pudding was chocolate Instant Whip with chocolate vermicelli strands on top!grin

Mamie Mon 24-Jul-17 09:18:13

We never normally have puddings, though we quite often finish a meal with a lump of blue cheese.
For birthdays and anniversaries I make a chocolate mousse of very dark chocolate, egg and cream and at Christmas we have something exquisite in chocolate from the patisserie. The family are coming next week so I shall buy a fraisier for the day they arrive.
Today we are having some French friends for lunch so I have made a limoncello and raspberry semi-freddo.

Only yoghurt most days, or strawberries, a peach etc. But on Sundays we allow ourselves a pud, or when we have visitors.Yesterday we had golden syrup sponge with creamy custard travelsafar your fave!
My fave pud is my own apple crumble, made with Bramleys.

Mums 99th at the weekend so am doing amongst other things a trifle with raspberries and strawberries. Vanilla mascarpone will replace the traditional custard and I can't remember what the booze is - it's a Nigel Slater recipe. I also have to cater for diary free so will do a compote of some sort with diary free ice cream.

Usually no, but I do love puddings of all sorts. When the grandchildren were younger we always had a sponge pudding of all sorts with thick custard. They loved it. One of their favourites was an apple sponge custard with mincemeat at the bottom - divine!!

Mum always made a rice or macaroni pud on Sundays. She also made superb steamed puds. I love puds as long as they don't contain chocolate.
I usually have yoghurt or fresh fruit these days and H will have a small portion of icecream with fruit as he dosen't like yoghurt. He's none to keen on pastry either so I'm not tempted to make pies or crumbles which is good

hildajenniJ Mon 24-Jul-17 12:12:21

We don't have puddings on weekdays. I make puddings on Sundays which has become a family tradition. Yesterday I made a raspberry cream flan, as I had my SiL and his Dad here for lunch.

TriciaF Mon 24-Jul-17 14:42:39

PoshGran - my own Gran used to say "wait and see" if you asked her what's for pudding? smile The favourite was Yorkshire puddings with golden syrup.
We usually just have fresh fruit, though I make icecream and we often have that with fruit compote.
In winter I make a stodgier pudding with real custard.

Charleygirl Mon 24-Jul-17 14:50:45

Thankfully I do not like any puddings, especially rice or custard. I am not a fan of pastry either so I never have anything. If I have fruit it is usually during the day, not as part of my evening meal.

whitewave Mon 24-Jul-17 14:58:42

Mind you if there is one thing we British are good at it is a pudding, it would be a shame to lose them.

Charleygirl Mon 24-Jul-17 15:05:38

whitewave I have never made one in my life!

mymadeupname Mon 24-Jul-17 15:08:40

I love that everyone on this thread is calling a pudding a pudding! I've noticed people seem mostly to refer to 'dessert' these days, which I find pretentious and ridiculous. Or sometimes they call pudding 'a sweet' which might even be worse to my ears.

Hipsy Mon 24-Jul-17 15:09:36

As a child Sunday roast was always followed with a Birds strawberry trifle. Still remember the sound of it being dished up. These days its just the occasional choc ice.

gillybob Mon 24-Jul-17 15:20:59

I remember when I was a child, it was always "a sweet" not pudding or desert. Typically it would be a tin of fruit and some "shaky" (Carnation) milk poured over, unless we were at grandmas in which case it would be a milky pudding with "rabbit" (skin) on top.

We sometimes had Yorkshire puddings with sugar and milk TriciaF.

Love puddings the stodgier the better grin nowadays I do one pudding a week roughly. We love any flavour sponge pud, rice pud, any flavour crumble OH favourite are suet puds, jam rolls poly, spotted dick etc .

Other days we have fruit.

Nonnie Mon 24-Jul-17 16:51:37

I like puddings but only have them when we go out to eat or have people to eat with us. I make an excellent treacle sponge! I don't even have ice cream in the house in case I get tempted but we always have plenty of fresh fruit in. DH did make a rice pudding last week though and it was delicious. Hot the first day and then cold the next. My slim DiLs love coming here for pud.

Greyduster Mon 24-Jul-17 18:40:25

Puddings in this house are mostly for high days and holidays. If family or friends come to lunch, I will make pineapple upside down cake, a crumble or steamed sponge. Yesterday because there were some nice strawberries to be had, we had a sponge strawberry flan, which is one of my favourites. When it is just DH and I, it is a piece of fruit or a yoghurt.

paddyann Tue 25-Jul-17 00:16:21

I make puddings all the time,my husband has a very sweet tooth, trifle or eton mess type usually in a glass, fruit and jelly layered with yogourt ,apple pie always hot with ice cream ,home made sorbets ,orange and cointreau is a favourite a flan case filled with yoghourt fesh berries and sugar free gel on top is good too and a large one looks impressive for Sunday family dinners .I dont eat sweet stuff and although I love a good piece of cheese I restrict how much I eat .I have been known to buy it and leave it in its wrapper until its sell by date before I opem it so I wont eat it all

cornergran Tue 25-Jul-17 04:45:47

Mum made rice pudding, steamed puddings, pies and crumbles. Ma in law was a superb baker and pudding maker, producimg everything you could think of. None of them were overweight. Mr C and I were slim children and young adults, positively skinny in fact. Now we have berries and yoghurt but always have a 'proper' pudding on Sunday, often Saturday as well and of course Monday if there is any left from the weekend. Every day when we have friends or family to stay. I make pies, puddings, crumbles, meringue, cream based puddings, lots of chocolate based things - just about anything but never trifle as I dislike it grin. We seem to be bucking the trend smile.

Greyduster Tue 25-Jul-17 07:46:28

I found thinking the other day about the steamed suet pastry jam roly-poly that my mother used to make. It was lovely. I have only ever made the baked version and it is not as nice. She used to wrap it in a muslin pudding cloth. I have a hankering for it so I will have to find a recipe.
