What Make-up brands do you wear if you are 70+

I find that my usual make up does not really suit me anymore. I don't wear very much, just powder and blusher. Sometimes I will use foundation. I have a Revlon and a Bobby Brown foundation,

I have recently lost a bit of weight and am slightly underweight. It really showed in my face which, I think, is quite craggy.

I have very sallow skin and am all-over grey, so without any make-up I look at deaths door. Coupled with being underweight, people keep asking me if I am feeling a.right if I don't wear any.

Any recommendations, and has anyone had the courage to speak to the consultants on the make-up counters? I would love to,pluck up courage but they seem a bit intimidating.

I use Aldi's BB cream rather than a foundation as it give just a light colour. I use a mousse type rouge which again goes on very lightly but stops me looking too corpse like. I'm using a Rimmel translucent powder which doesn't go on too thickly and a selection of lipsticks, Rimmel, Estee Lauder, Benefit.

I think to some extent we need to experiment to see what suits. Now that I wear glasses and my hair is white I need to have some colour on my skin and plenty of eye make up
Depends on what colour clothes I wear too.

Hello Flossie.
I wear a tinted moisturiser now. I found that foundation just gets clogged up in the wrinkles!. I asked one of the consultants at our local department store to help me choose a shade. I know I have to be careful here and not advertise, so can I just say the lady I saw wears a red suit. and her products begins with C. She was very helpful and suggested a few tips to apply the stuff without looking like a painted doll. I finish off with a light powder blusher and that stops you having a shiny face. Pluck up courage and ask for their advice, my lady was very young , and very helpful to a lady of 72. Let us know how you get on.

I don't wear much, an eyeliner and bit of mascara and lippy so anywhere that is cheapish Wilco had a cheap line in recently so their £ 2.99 specials worked for me
You ll probably all prove me wrong but I think make up is over priced and it all does the same job if it's £2.99 or £12.99

harrigran Tue 08-Aug-17 17:44:04

I do not wear it on a daily basis but when I do it is Estee Lauder.

Flossieturner Tue 08-Aug-17 18:46:57

Kupari, sorry to be thick but I don't know who wears red. I dont think it is advertising as I asked for brands.

A good foundation isn't cheap, but lasts well and will never clog your skin or sink into your wrinkles. Apply lightly with a make up sponge or even better, a foundation brush. Good quality ones such as Clinique, Estee Lauder also have SPF so give some protection which is very important.

Think K is talking Clarins. If you do speak to a person on a beauty I have found them to be very helpful and at times they will give you a couple of samples to try at home. I normally use a Clinique light foundation but they have one for our age - and usually a powder blusher.
An alternative to lipstick can be a bottle of the Benefit liquid job which you paint on and leave to dry and you use a couple of coats to get a depth you like. Can also be used as a blusher. Whenever I wear it people always say I am looking well !!!

I choose brands which don't test their products on animals (usually rabbits, usually squirted into their eyes).

There are plenty to,choose from, but most of the above do test on animals.

I use Estee Lauder Ever Wear, lasts all day, and I put it on with a foundation brush - the brush means it goes on very evenly and well into the hairline etc.

I use Rimmel waterproof mascara, Avon Glimmersticks navy blue eyeliner which I soften with a brush. And use Avon Glimmersticks eyebrow in Blonde, so no harsh eyebrows. I am careful to have my eyebrows waxed and trimmed regularly. Rimmel lipstick in Amethyst.

It's all a 10 minute job and lasts all day except for Lippy which is reapplied as necessary.

I'm 68 and always wear makeup. And Yes, I also went to a Make Up Counter, Estee Lauder, to get colour and foundation sorted. Afterwards I asked for a sample to use before buying, to be sure of the product as it is quite expensive, more than I've ever paid before at £28 on line (with free postage). It was £32 in Duty Free.

The sample lasted 7 days.

Although they are not required by law, several tests are commonly performed that expose mice, rats, rabbits and guinea pigs to cosmetics ingredients. These can include:
Skin and eye irritation tests where chemicals are rubbed onto the shaved skin or dripped into the eyes of estrained rabbits without any pain relief
Repeated force-feeding studies lasting weeks or months to look for signs of general illness or specific health hazards such as cancer or birth defects
Widely condemned "lethal dose" tests, in which animals are forced to swallow large amounts of a test chemical to determine the dose that causes death.
At the end of a test the animals are killed, normally by asphyxiation, neck-breaking or decapitation. Pain relief is not provided.

Products than clean the skin well without harshness like Liz Earle and then nourish so really any of the good moisturisers, then perhaps some primer which helps foundation or base as its called now go on smoothly without setting in the lines. I stick to Clarins and Clinique for moisturisers and most make up except base- I use Chanel as its so easy to apply and doesn't settle in my wrinkles. I hear Charlotte Tilbury is very good but I cant get that where I live. Next time I'm in a larger city I am going to have some of that.

Eglantine19 Wed 09-Aug-17 09:43:18

Anya, have you found one that doesn't make human eyes sting and water? Sometimes if it gets in my eyes I can't see for the pain. Especially anything with sunblock in it. So I wouldn't like that done to animals for sure. But I need to know it won't do it to me before I pay lots of money. Clinique doesn't work even though it's suppose to be hypoallergenic.

Teetime Wed 09-Aug-17 10:11:59

I would try Liz Earle eglantine19 very mild, nourishing and not tested on animals.

I meant to say flossieturner if someone wants to give you a nice treat how about a facial at a good Salon e.g. Clarins, Elemis or Decleor you'll have a lovely nourishing treatment, probably some useful samples and good advice.

I wear whatever is on offer in T J Hughes which always has branded stuff reduced. I sometimes buy at Boots when they have a voucher. I think it's better to pay less do a bit of experimenting and throw out anything that doesn't work rather than spend a fortune and be stuck with stuff, I do change my foundation shade in winter and summer. I always use moisturiser before I put on any make up. Got several different lipsticks and lots of different eyeliners-but usually use a kohl pencil.

Try look fabulous forever makeup made especially for over 50s, I'm 64 and always use a primer before make up and a concealer to hide age spots, the makeup is light and looks natural.

Hello Flossie,
Are you on Pinterest? There are lots of great pins on there that will give you great ideas about how to update your make up, hair and style to look great and make the most of yourself as your skin tone changes and your hair turns silver. One good one is Look Fabulous Forever, it's full of inspiring ideas on how to update your look. As we get older there's no need to give up on make up, but we do need to change the shades and types of products we use to suit our changing needs. My hair has been silver for over 20 years and I used to have it in highlights and lowlights, but about 12 years ago I went into a salon in Soho and asked the stylist to cut as much of the colour out as possible as I was going to go au natural, but I didn't want to look like an old lady! She cut it into a super short pixie cut and I've never looked back. I use violet shampoo and conditioner to keep it bright and serum and hair oil to give it shine. I've had my non existent eye brows tattooed back in place ( they look very natural ) and I use cc cream and a Clinique chubby stick blusher in a berry shade. My lipstick is also a berry shade and I use a neutral eye shadow with black mascara on my upper lasher only as I have quite pronounced shadows under my eyes. I use a colour corrector and YSL touche eclat to help with this. I also wear glasses and favour a strong colour in a fashionable Ray Ban shape. My favourites are a deep blue and a burgundy pair which go with most of my wardrobe. Don't be intimidated by the girls on the make up counters, they don't just want to sell to teenagers and young girls, but do pick a brand that sells good products ( you already have some good brands!) and tell the assistant you want a natural look that will enhance your features. I personally like Bobbie Brown, Clinique and Mac as their products are good quality and they have good natural shades. If they are too pricey, just look for similar shades in a cheaper brand. There are some fantastic products out there now for us older ladies, apparently manufacturers have woken up to the fact that these days over 60's are not all spending our days at home knitting, and we want to look our best! I hope you find some products to suit you as I firmly believe if you feel good about yourself, you will have a more positive attitude to life. Ps...Pinterest is very addictive, but you will enjoy looking for ideas to inspire you. Best of luck! ☺️

Is T J Hughes still going? One not far from here has shut down and I'm sure my relatives further north said that theirs had too.
I used to like going there as I usually found a bargain.

Flossieturner Thu 10-Aug-17 09:41:29

Thank you for helpful answers.

As an aside I have just noticed a MNetter has remarked on my post.

Juggernaut Thu 10-Aug-17 17:37:14

Jalima1108
TJ Hughes is alive and well in the north west!
I get all sorts of cosmetics bargains in there, but I won't even go in the place as it gets closer to 'the festive season' (see what I did there? I won't use the 'C' ?word until at least November) as the only description I can use is 'Hell on wheels'?

Just us down here who are deprived then!
