I am forever warning people that these forums are public and a thread may end up on Facebook.

I really think that GNHQ should put a note on the Forum home page to that effect in big, bold, text - red, underlined, anything to draw attention to that fact. Put it in the welcome email too. Especially as some posters are not only new to GN, but new to forums.

I can't bear to think that an already stressful situation is made worse for someone because their posts are used as a "trailer" on the Facebook page.

(Writing this because I noticed that someone has been caught out by this, how upsetting).

And no I don't have any links showing up at the top of every page Leticia however I have found them they are at the very bottom and not on my viewing screen I only see them if I scroll across something I hadn't needed to do before so I had certainly never seen them I m using an iPad and I bet people using phones probably hadn't seen them either

Leticia Fri 18-Aug-17 15:07:52

I doubt whether people like shysal are aware that their school photo is now on Twitter- I am sure that she didn't post it thinking that.

Leticia Fri 18-Aug-17 15:09:23

I am using an iPad and they are clearly visible top and bottom of this page.
GN may not Tweet anything of a sensitive nature but anyone can.

Lona Fri 18-Aug-17 16:01:35

As far as I can remember, Gnet have been posting links on Fbook for a long time now. How many members have been recognised?
Not many I bet.
Considering how many intelligent, well educated, sensible members there are, I'm very surprised that so many know so little about what happens online.

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 18-Aug-17 16:13:01

Hello, again just to clear some things up. No one's name has appeared on our Facebook posts and we haven't posted a picture of Shysal on Twitter (we don't have any photos of her). smile

FarNorth Fri 18-Aug-17 16:19:48

There is a photo on the First Day at School thread. If that thread is on Twitter won't the photo be there?

petra Fri 18-Aug-17 16:21:54

Lona
Same here. Take out Facebook, Twitter and any other social media and it's all there for anyone to see the minute you put fingers to keyboard.
The clues are there: World Wide Web.

Oldwoman70 Fri 18-Aug-17 16:29:43

I think the difference is that to find it on the web you would have to type in First Day at School, how likely is that. If it is on an open FB page anyone can see it. Yes I know anyone can read posts on GN (perhaps GNHQ should look into making it visible only to logged in members) but how many random people look through a search engine and see a website called Gransnet and think "oh I'll click on that because it is bound to have something I will want to see"

Leticia Fri 18-Aug-17 17:12:45

A picture of Shysal is on Twitter because you linked the entire thread and she put a photo with her post. It is of her when she was a child - but even so would she have wanted it?
To find it on Twitter you just click on the GN account and scroll down.

Leticia Fri 18-Aug-17 17:35:45

There are sensitive issues linked to Twitter by GN. If I were cookiemonster66 I wouldn't want my thread to go anywhere other than GN. Was she asked for permission? Does she even know?

Ana Fri 18-Aug-17 17:42:20

Oh, I thought you were fine with it all, Leticia - you've been telling us all day that we're naive and should be more aware...hmm

Cherrytree59 Fri 18-Aug-17 17:43:56

It is not just fb and Twitter everything that is posted t'internrt is on Google to be viewed by the world.

The family pictures that some GN members post are now on Google for all the world to see!

This was brought home to me earlier this year when I was browsing Google and I spotted a post where a person was looking for a particular family.
The people they were looking for had the same names as my Grandmother and her siblings.
I nearly spewed my coffee out!!
It had been lifted from Ancestry UK dated 2004, a 13 year old post.
I called Ancestry UK who said they couldn't help because of Data protection
"But its on Google" I said

Anyway had 14 day free trial on A/UK and found a cousin in USA.
Worked out ok but just showed that just because one posts on a particular site it is out there forever on the Internet.

Leticia Fri 18-Aug-17 17:54:38

I have no idea why you thought that Ana - I am not on the least OK with it. I just realised that nothing on the Internet is private and even you have high privacy settings on things like FB - GN doesn't have any. I pointed out that it was not just FB and then you got cross and told me that was what the discussion was about! People need to be aware that the issue goes far beyond FB.
Not sure if GNHQ realise as they came on to say they hadn't posted a picture, when I only used that as an example because I had seen it!
I was surprised myself to see what was in Twitter. I don't follow GN , if I did every tweet would be on my timeline. If I had posted advice, of a sensitive nature, I wouldn't want it on Twitter.

Leticia Fri 18-Aug-17 17:56:55

I also thought that the thread was started to make people aware. It certainly made me aware that Grannyknot had started a very important thread because many people are completely unaware on here.

Ana Fri 18-Aug-17 17:57:06

I did not 'get cross'.

Ana Fri 18-Aug-17 18:12:13

Bet they don't put this thread on FB! grin

(Having to use bold because of course we still don't have the italitcs facility...)

Leticia Fri 18-Aug-17 18:34:55

I would call it 'getting cross' when you told me that people were aware and we were only discussing FB. They clearly were not aware and I have at least caused some people to close down their GN profile.
I think that they are getting more upset about FB because very few do Twitter.
I wasn't aware, until I looked, how much is on Twitter. I shall certainly not give any personal advice on sensitive subjects in the future now that I know how far it travels.
I think that a young woman that I know is very sensible to keep photos of her children off the Internet- she doesn't even post on FB- only adults.

Leticia Fri 18-Aug-17 18:37:12

A notice should be there under 'add your message here' saying that you must be aware that anyone at all can read your message and in fact GN may even link it on other sites.

Leticia Fri 18-Aug-17 18:38:54

I would be tempted to put it on Twitter if it didn't give away my identity! (As a warning) Rest assured that I won't.

BlueBelle Fri 18-Aug-17 18:44:18

Well I ve just googled First day at school as that's a recent thread and nothing at all has come up for gransnet !!!

Fishpieplease Fri 18-Aug-17 18:47:48

Leticaia. I think your last but one comment is excellent. Simple, and surely very easy to implement.

Cherrytree59 Fri 18-Aug-17 18:57:04

GN gives a cosy feeling.
People get lulled in to a false sense of security.

Think reality TV
The psychology behind is the same.

A few weeks in and the participants
(no matter how intelligent or media savvy) have completely forgotten that they are on TV and are being watched by millions!

GN needs to be out there.
A few Grans discussing the price of fish will not bring in advertising revenue.
It is a business that requires media attention.
The easiest way is through fb and Twitter.
You the poster may take umbrage that that The Daily Mail has lifted a site post,
but you can bet your bottom Dollar that GN ( the business) is more than happy with the exposure.

To GNers it is a place to discuss life. loves and problems.

I can only repeat to The GN owners/Management
It is a business (not a charity) on the worldwide stage.

Leticia Fri 18-Aug-17 19:06:38

Don't let that lull you into a false sense of security BlueBelle - odd things often come up.
I agree with Cherrytree59 - it is all to do with advertising revenue.

Leticia Fri 18-Aug-17 19:07:38

Easy enough to do Fishpieplease.

Jalima1108 Fri 18-Aug-17 20:06:53

There is a picture of me in the reception class at school out there on the internet - someone posted it on a historical site (historical??! - me?)
Thank goodness no names are attached as I looked completely gormless and bewildered.
