Open those windows

Conkers that's a great tip franbern. I shall pass this onto my daughter who is very scared of creepy crawlies of all kinds but still opens her windows as Mother taught her to do.
A word on whether other people windows are my business or not this is a Neighborood Watch area in the grip of a mini crime wave so yes it is my business.

I have windows that tilt inwards so are safe to leave open as nobody can fit through them! So my bedroom window is always open as ate my kitchen windows. My neighbours know when I'm away as it's the only time I shut them!

SueDonim Unfortunately those huge spiders that scuttle across your floor (and mine) live indoors, if you throw them out they will get back in or die, the ones outside on the plants live outside and wouldn't come in if you paid them. Apparently when they come out of the dark corners to scuttle across the floor they are females and looking for mates. But as I tell them as I throw them to the furthest corners of the garden 'my house is not a knocking shop, go somewhere else!)

I sleep with our bedroom window open, summer and winter, rain, shine or snow. If we stay in a hotel or bnb I really hate it if the windows are sealed, especially invariably if the air con doesn't work efficiently.
I too notice none of my neighbours seem to like fresh air.

We don't open the front windows much, so our neighbours may think that we don't like 'air' BUT at the back windows AND doors are all open, almost all day, when we are at home.

I open every available window at first sign of sun. I always have a bedroom window open- even slightly all through the winter. I love to get fresh air into the house.
I am not mad about closed curtains either although in the winter I shut them to keep in the heat but never have them pulled in summer- except bedroom which has street light outside which would keep me awake. Apart from the fresh air it is lovely to hear the birds singing in the morning & the owls calling at night.

Is it sooooo important what others do in their lives if it is not interfering with our own life.?

Interesting ....... I've found it necessary to keep my windows closed from noonish as the burnt barbecue aromas linger everywhere. Absolutely horrible.

I open them during the day, though I question if I am not just letting the pollution in, but at night have to stifle. We have a speed bump directly outside; it doesn't slow vehicles down but the noise as they fly over the hump is loud and if it's a truck, everything inside the truck jumps and crashes back down. Still worse are people walking up the road at 2 in the morning having loud conversations/rows on their phones. Penalty of living in a city I suppose.

We always have our bedroom windows open all day and all night too. We live on a busy main road so tend to mainly open doors and windows which are at the back of the house, but still regularly open the front ones when it's a nice day just to get some fresh air in.

I also follow my mum's advice of always opening all the windows and also the wardrobe doors on cold windy days to let the fresh air into all the clothes. Have no idea if it works or not but keeps her quiet and I do think wardrobes probably need airing too!

I would open my windows if I could! I live beside a main road - no pavement in the village. The lorries are taller than the house, if I opened the windows I wouldn't have any glass left. I hasten to add that when I moved into the village it was delightfully rural, hardly any traffic then the Min of Transpt decided to make us the main route to the A1 and nothing will change their minds.

I am with you, Witzend; I feel twitchy if I can't feel some fresh air in a room, although I am not claustrophobic in any way. I open the windows in every room every morning to get some lovely fresh air blowing through the house and we sleep with both bedroom windows open at the top - otherwise I wake up feeling stifled in the small hours. My GP said that houses harbour dust mites, mould spores and germs and a good 'blow through' with air is needed to get rid of it. So many people live in stuffy houses and with cooking, tumble dryers, even just breathing, moisture is created. Mould forms, and then people spray chemicals about to get rid of it - a few open windows and it wouldn't happen.

I love all the windows and doors open too. We live in a three floor town house and have recently had bifold doors fitted where once there was a rectangular window in the lounge. Being able to open the garage door on the ground floor means a very strong breeze blows right through the house every day. I just love fresh air and how fresh every room smells. I just cannot bear to be in a stuffy (smelly) house. My granddaughter once said "I love coming to your house Grandma it always smells of lovely flowers". Even at night we have bedroom windows open. I hate even staying in hotels where windows are sealed up and can't wait to get out into fresh air. I have to say, living by the seaside is lovely for fresh air lovers.

Thanks Mercedes55 for that 'wardrobe' sharing. Don't know if it'll have any effect but certainly worth a try. Like it but wonder how I got to be this old without even considering it. Dearie me!

I live with a fresh air fiend! Consequently the living room window is open, as is the kitchen window. I always open the bathroom window when I'm in the shower, and then leave it open until dusk. I never close the window in the downstairs loo as the central heating boiler is in there.

Doors and windows open here all year round. I always think of fresh air as medicine for our old cottage.

Normally the windows are all open slightly winter and summer but this year it's been so hot (40c) since mid June that we have had to adopt the Italian practice of closing the shutters and doors at about 11:00 and not re-opening them until the sun goes down. We then have them all open all night!! No chance of intruders with 3 very large dogs looking after us!!

Another reason not to open the windows!!

Missdeke, no spider that makes an appearance in my house gets the chance to reproduce! As my Dd says 'It must be made dead.'

I can tolerate money spiders and those striped garden spiders, they're ok.

Some people like fresh air, some people hate draughts.
It's a matter of personal choice, isn't it?
But, since seeing an adder in the back garden two days ago nothing on earth will persuade me to open a window or door or even the letter box now! Can adders climb walls? Can they climb drainpipes? Can they climb into the toilet?
Help!

Our neighbour has a bedroom window open (the same one always) come rain or shine. He's a smoker, and I reckon that's his smoking room.

I have my French doors open all the time as I love fresh air in the house. Infact I would rather put a cardi on than close the doors . Every window upstairs is open too. Can't bear stuffiness . I think my neighbours on one side are allergic to fresh air .
