Suddenly feel old

I suddenly felt old recently when I got a letter from the NHS.
"Can't be for a smear test, I'm too old" I thought.
It wasn't.
It was for a flu jab as I am in an 'at risk' category.

I missed seeing David Bowie, very early on. I asked my mum to buy tickets for me and BF, as I was at work.
She said the lady in the shop (local electricians/record shop) had told her not to bother as no-one was buying tickets and it would probably be cancelled.!!
"Of course it will, if she tells everyone that" I said.
Transport difficulties and work times meant we didn't have another chance to buy a ticket.
And, dear reader, the concert was cancelled.

Marc Bolan bought me a drink and chatted during the interval of a gig in 1969. He was absolutely lovely. It was before his T Rex reinvention and he sat at the edge of the stage playing the bongos and mesmerising all the girls. He died when I was on honeymoon. The recent documentary brought back a lot of memories.

Pamela, we went to a Who gig a few years back and sat with others in an area full of fold down chairs and cool boxes (and the odd tartan knee blanket ). A fresh-faced young thing strayed over to this area at one point and announced loudly that it was like bloody Homebase.

We added to the stereotype by not remembering where we'd parked the car, and having to stand at the end waiting for everyone else to drive off past us till it was about the last one left in the carpark.

Yes, Esspee, I have had my bubble burst in that way. Some years back I had a friend who was six years younger than me. I am godmother to her daughter. We were having a birthday BBQ with my friend and daughter, who at that time was about 4/5 years old. During the afternoon my GD came and sat on my lap, she looked straight at my face and said 'you'r old' very loudly, which stopped the conversation all around!

Saw the m at Wembley- the Steel Wheels tour.
There were people there with cool boxes. COOL BOXES WITH FOOD AT A STONES CONCERT!!
When we left and walked down to the tube the way was policed with mounted policemen. Most of us stopped to pet the horses and have a chat with the officers.

Old age sucks. But no one but the Stones look really really crepey !! (sic)

I saw the Stones at Knebworth in 1976. Not really at their best and problems with the sound system. Still pleased that I saw them though.
Several years ago the young girls I work with were off to Knebworth to see Oasis and thought it hysterical when I told them I had been to a concert there. That made me feel old!

Sorry, silverlining, Wrong year. Bob Dylan did the IW festival in 1969. 1970 was Jimi Hendrix and Joan Baez.

We were on the isle of wight in 1970 when bob dylan was there, but didn't go for the concerts. the ferries to and fro was heaving with happy hippiesv.

Loulou21 like you I saw groups at Leyton Baths. It was a swimming pool that was boarded over and then became a dance floor. I remember seeing the Searchers there and others which have slipped my mind.

Esspee the thing to hang on to was that they don't seem able to believe you are as old as you actually are so you are obviously doing well and looking good.

They may have said the Stones have been around forever but it sounds as if they were completely surprised that you could have seen them way back when.

I rather like Placebo Willow DS played some of their stuff when he lived with us. Saw the Stones a couple of times at Poll Winners concerts in the 60s. I once got chatting to a young girl who was a distant cousin of John Lennon. I don't know who was more impressed, me because she was related to him or her because I'd actually seen him on stage!

Billy J Kramer was the support act at the Stones gig if I remember right.

Saw the Stones live at a concert at Longleat in 1964. Danced to the Yardbirds at a Cambridge May Ball in 1964 or 1965, can't remember which.

I never saw any 60s bands live at the time but have seen loads of later bands. Pink Floyd, Queen, Led Zep, Springsteen etc and to me they are better, they have a deeper more rounded sound. The 60s bands always sounded tinny to me, but each to their own.

I've never liked the Stones but have seen some amazing bands over the years including Queen and Tina Turner and still love those from this generation. Next month I'm seeing Placebo and have often gone to concerts on my own as no one else likes my taste in music. I don't feel old or out of place - in fact I quite like the shock some youngsters show when they realise I'm a grandmother still into music Don't take any notice of people's comments and continue to enjoy going to gigs

When I feel old I think of a celebrity that is my age and that gives me hope because they are usually well kept

There was a good programme about Marc Bolam on BBC 4 the other week; in his own words, I think it was called.

Someone carried my shopping to the bus today and someone else pressed the bell for me and someone helped me off. I feel about a hundred and have not dared look in the mirror since. In fact I think I might put a veil over it. Or turn it to the wall.

After retirement I was helping out at a senior school and in History they were talking about many, many years ago in the olden days 1952, and it suddenly hit home it was the year I was born !! Also in assembly, I looked round and realised that I was the oldest person in the whole school. It's weird, I don't have any issues with my age, I just have to keep reminding myself just how old I actually am. Of course it's so nice when everyone doesn't believe just how ancient you actually are !!

Biggest mistake I made was selling my ticket for a
early days Tina Turner concert to be held in Leicester as my friend was not able to make it with me.

I saw the Beatles at the Albert Hall and there were not top of the bill. Del Shannon was, if you remember him. We sat right up the back but they were still great.
When I see the stones or Paul or Ringo now I know they have all grown old with me.

Went to an attraction yesterday and lady automatically charged us both senior price, I'm 56!!

Sorry so lovely reading all the Stones memories I forgot we were supposed to be doing 'wind out of sails'. At a large supper for complete family my little granddaughter ran round the table and whispered in my ear 'you're my favourite', then she popped back and whispered 'of the old people'
