My claim to fame is I have spoken on the phone to Princess Diana's mother. Back in the distant past I was a shipping clerk in London and the company shipped Shand Kidd wallpapers. Mr Kidd at the time was having a relationship with Diana's mother and she helped him with the business. We always referred to her as Lady Althorpe when speaking to her.

What's your claim to fame

Ooh MissAdventure Mike Read asked my Mum out in about 1970!

I used to work in Promotions at a newspaper so I've been chatted up by Stuart Hall (ugh! as if!), Francis Matthews (lovely man), just a little while ago Ken Dodd did his whole show directed at me (don't I just attract the handsomest men?), loads more but very in the past.

My brother wrote "Mother of Mine" which was sung by Neil Reid and it was written about my mum, she was SO proud!

He played lead guitar for all sorts of stars including Tom Jones, Sammy Davis Junior, PJ Proby, Petula Clark, etc etc -I didn't meet any of them but it is my claim to fame!

This isn't my claim to fame, but somebody I know had taken her granddaughter, who has a learning disability, to a London restaurant
They saw Simon Cowell there, having what appeared to be a business lunch, with papers etc spread over the table
Her granddaughter went up to him before her Nan could stop her, and he apparently was absolutely lovely, and very patient.

I used to work in a small branch of a big bank in a village and a lady came in who I thought looked familiar. Once she spoke to me I knew exactly who she was. The well loved Joan Hickson, or as we will always think of her as 'Miss Marple'. She was an amusing regular customer, with no airs or graces.

I have only one - when I was 11 I presented a bouquet to Virginia McKenna at Newmarket Races (because my Red Cross uniform was the neatest of the bunch, apparently).

My mother, on the other hand, as secretary to the Estates Manager at the Jockey Club, was as good as on first name terms with lots of celebs, Lester Piggott, of course, and King Hussein of Jordan to name a couple she mentioned.

I have seen the Beatles live at Finsbury Park Empire. I also worked with someone who said Helen Shapiro had got off a bus and stepped on his foot. These claims to fame were in the early sixties - since then I have seen Tim Brook Taylor coming out of our local W H Smith, and chatted to Paul Barber (Denzil in Only Fools and Horses ) when I came out of a hair salon and bumped into him. Nothing as remotely exciting as some posters here!

Two claims to fame....I used to be in the same primary school class as the actress Maureen Lipman. Also a few years ago while I was still working for a Housing Association they purchased a property in a beautiful coastal location that had belonged to Sir Lawrence Olivier. This they had converted into convalescent care for less fortunate people. My husband and me were extremely lucky to work and live there. The original features of the house were kept as far as possible.....we felt quite in awe of it all.

I taught Katy Sexton and her sister, Kelly at Primary School. They were both lovely girls and swam regularly before school even then.

No claims to fame.?

lemongrove Fri 29-Sept-17 11:38:19

Phew, Nanasam you had a lucky escape there?( Keith Richards) he now looks about 150 years old ( bet your DH looks so much better.)

Claim to Fame.
I'm probably showing my age here. I have a photograph taken with Tex Ritter (85 movies, lots of records) taken in The Top Hat Club, Prenton. I think it was a Press Ball.
I was there with three other couples giving a Jive/Rock N Roll demo.

I had tea at Lambeth Palace and supper with George Carey at Canterbury in the early 90s. I also met Terry Waite, 10 days after he had ben released and he shook my hand. Amazing man.

I once dropped a single arum lily I'd just bought and was busily gossiping to a friend outside our little rural PO, when the captain of the Titanic appeared (in the film that is, the one with Kate Winslet in) I forget his name - and he picked it up for me. I did say thank you...

Aged about 17 I 'met' Richard Dimbleby when he and my father both received awards in the Birthday Honours, my father a considerably lower honour..

I could be seen on TV that evening to my embarrassment skipping past Mr. Dimbleby down the steps at Buckingham Palace in an ugly hat and looking like a 13 year old.

More exciting was the evening I agreed to give a lift to a friend who needed to deliver a heavy piece of work she had done for Bamber Gascoigne and his wife. I had a beautiful book by them both and took it with me to be autographed.

Two of my children work in industries which bring them into contact with many 'celebrities' and I know from them that a number of them are far from friendly off screen but Bamber and his wife were just lovely.

meandashy Fri 29-Sept-17 11:23:10

I waited on Paul Weller once. It was very difficult not to drool on him.... ?
Reginald D Hunter chatted me up during one of his shows. He's a very sexy man, unfortunately I was on a date (with a guy who turned out to be a numpty sadly) ?

Lindylou57 Fri 29-Sept-17 11:16:49

Went to school with Ian Rush ex Liverpool player. Met Patrick Mower when he was opening a store in Chester. He was lovely. Also met Daley Thompson . He was lovely to chat too but the bubble burst several years later when I met him again and he was rather arrogant. Greg Rutherford is a local and you couldnt meet a nicer chap. John Terry on the otherhand is a complete and utter ........! Cant bear the man.

Chewbacca Fri 29-Sept-17 11:13:52

No it was Affleck & Brown's on Oldham Street CherryHatrick, but it was the "sister" store to Kendal Milnes on Deansgate. Funnily enough, many years after serving Pat Phoenix in the store, I was invited to the wedding of a young neighbour. She was the niece of Pat Phoenix and so I had the "pleasure" of meeting her again!

Hubby and I shared a lift with Jackie Stewart and his wife at a charity dinner in Glasgow. They were both very charming.

In my younger days my two friends and I had many innocent encounters with pop stars when autograph hunting. These include:

Chasing Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch down the street and cornering them in a newsagents.

Chatting with Jet Harris when he was in The Shadows, he was lovely and got Cliff Richard's autograph for us.

Talking to John Barry and members of The John Barry Seven.

Chatting with Marty Wilde's backing Group The Wild Cats in a coffee bar and being invited to go with them to their next venue - of course we declined.

Flirting with Emile Ford at the stage door.

Talking to Gerry Dorsey who later became Engelbert Humperdinck.

Talking to Tommy Steele and his wife in an underground car park in Blackpool.

Talking to Adam Faith in the above-mentioned car park. He had the twinkliest, bluest eyes I have ever seen.

And the big one which my friend and I still talk about. In the early 1960s there was a show at Earls Court called The Radio Show. We were on holiday in London and heard that Billy Fury was appearing so we got there early and were standing in the front row. It was very hot, my friend fainted and was carried off out of sight. In a panic I tried to find her by going through the only door I could see and I came face to face with Billy. We just looked at each other then he went one way and I went the other. I walked along the corridor and went in a door which was The Green Room. Thankfully my friend was there being looked after by the actress Mandy Miller who was lovely. Then in walked Billy and he sat opposite us; we told Mandy we had come to see Billy and she told us to go and talk to him but we were both too scared. Then he went on stage and the opportunity was lost for ever.

Nona4ever Fri 29-Sept-17 11:12:12

That's nothing. I once knew a girl whose auntie's ex-best friend used to live next door but one to a man who worked with a Welsh couple who were once on the same bus as Ken Dodd!

W11girl Fri 29-Sept-17 11:09:05

Born in Notting Hill, in the 1950s,we were surrounded with "famous" people..my mother worked. as a cleaner for a number of politicians. Richard Branson lived in the same street as us (first signs of gentrification and social cleansing!). in the 60's we lived across the road from a building that the BBC used, so saw many stars including the Beatles. A Hard Day's Night was filmed there. Tony Hancock's half hour and Z cars was filmed there as well. In the late 1970's, early 80's numerous rock/pop stars came to live in the area. We weren't phased by any of them, they were all just ordinary human beings like ourselves, and I was friends with one or two of them. Both my son and son-in-law are in the entertainment business and although I have had many opportunities to meet "celebs", I have no real interest.

CherryHatrick Fri 29-Sept-17 11:04:50

Chewbacca was that Kendals? I loved that shop as you could always find exactly what you were looking for, even if you didn't know what you were looking for when you went in.
My DH still brags that he used to go riding with Pat Phoenix; what he really means is that they both used the same stables to hire horses by the hour and sometimes went out in the same group!

valeriej43 Fri 29-Sept-17 10:59:18

I am related although distantly to Dame Sybil Thorndike
My Grandmas cousin, who was the spitting image of her

libra10 Fri 29-Sept-17 10:58:41

A couple of weeks ago I spoke on Radio City, or rather, gabbled in shock!

They phoned me (out of the blue) to tell me I had won their weekly competition for a prize of £2000 cash.

My claim to fame - a lovely surprise!

nanasam Fri 29-Sept-17 10:57:54

Keith Richards bought me a drink when the Stones were performing at Eel Pie Island in Twickenham and I was in the dressing room with all the band (he had his arm round me!). It was the night before they embarked on their very first tour. They played there every week, so who knows what may have happened! I wrote to him on the tour and got a card back saying he remembered me alright!
