Hi Gransnet,

I got the following phishing message into my gransnet message box from a poster called trustee- thought you might be interested to ban this user.
I've changed the email contact details in the message.

This is the message I got.

'God bless you and thanks,
how are you? Happy to meet you. I got your contact via this site, I seriously have interest to invest on a profitable business in your country, the money I want to invest was acquired from my church member, and then I was his financial adviser. The amount to invest is ($14.5 million US dollars) presently, but I’m the present Catholic Church leader in my parish, if you will like to assist me as a partner, you must have the fear of God? Kindly indicate your interest, and all other details relating to the funds will be revealed to you as we progress on. Confidentiality contact my direct e-mail address ([email protected] or [email protected]) also indicate your direct telephone number, when replying this mail, God will guide us and with good health Amen,
God bless you and your family,
Rev, Chris'

.

Have just received the same message! Have blocked it.

giulia Sun 08-Oct-17 07:02:33

Do you live outside the UK, as I do? Maybe this is why, because he says "in your country".

tanith Sun 08-Oct-17 07:56:04

I got it too but deleted the message without opening.

Maggiemaybe Sun 08-Oct-17 07:58:01

Gransnet are already aware and have dealt with it, according to earlier threads.

mcem Sun 08-Oct-17 07:59:21

I got it too. Simply came as a pm from GN so didn't think to delete it first.
Surely we don't have to change all GN account details?

Greyduster Sun 08-Oct-17 08:07:42

Me too. Got rid of it. Thanks for the heads up!

ninathenana Sun 08-Oct-17 08:10:13

There was a thread yesterday about this it was reported and HQ have deleted the user.

ninathenana Sun 08-Oct-17 08:12:35

Sorry Maggie didn't read all posts.

Obviously didn't think it worth asking me, I've not had the message smile

annsixty Sun 08-Oct-17 08:28:27

Are you like me nina stupidly affronted because you didn't get one?
How pathetic is that?
Perhaps we don't flaunt our "wealth" enough.?

mcem Sun 08-Oct-17 08:38:42

Seems to be total random. Wish I had wealth to flaunt!

Did anyone see the story on TV about the couple who lost £100,000 through opening an 'infected' email?
It was one of the most frightening scams I've ever seen, but to cut a long story short....... the programme makers took the couple to a company that deals with this.
What they discovered was horrendous.
The scammers had been watching the family through a camera they ( the scammers) had put on their computer.
when they asked, how ? they were told: * you opened an 'infected email*
The experts had the couples computer there with them and brought up film of the inside of their home, the poor woman was nearly physically sick.

If as some suggest these are seriously phishing emails, I wonder if GNHQ could be held in some way responsible as an intermediary, passing on dodgy emails.
It's one thing to receive an email from an unknown source but quite different if it comes from an ostensibly trusted one.

MawBroon Sun 08-Oct-17 08:59:11

Perhaps I am being naïve but I don’t think PMs are the same as emails .
When I saw my PM yesterday I reported it, blocked the sender and put a “heads up”on a new thread.

GNHQ subsequently removed the sender from the site (you have to be a member to send PMs) and I don’t see what more they could have done.

MawBroon Sun 08-Oct-17 09:00:14

PS what I meant mcem is that to the best of my knowledge none of us have received emails from this sender.

acanthus Sun 08-Oct-17 09:08:11

Relieved to see that I wasn't the only one to have received this. Is there a bona fide Gransnet member called 'trustee'? If not, then surely there should be some sort of filter to prevent this happening?

harrigran Sun 08-Oct-17 09:30:43

This scam has been around for years. They are Nigerian criminals and join forums for the express purpose of fleecing people. If they blitz hundreds of people they will always find a few gullible ones that believe their story, we have all seen these duped people on TV.

gillybob Sun 08-Oct-17 09:40:20

How do you block a PM please ? I got one yesterday too .

harrigran Sun 08-Oct-17 09:47:10

Open the message in the in box and above it you will see block sender, just click that. Probably no need as GN has removed this person and they can't come back under the same name. Delete the message and that will be enough.

gillybob Sun 08-Oct-17 09:51:29

Thanks harri I've done it . I'm on my phone and couldn't find the "block" button.

mcem Sun 08-Oct-17 10:07:17

Thanks maw. I meant that I received notification of the pm via email from GN and, as I trust a GN email I went to my inbox and opened it.
If a flurry of PM's arrive from an unknown poster I'd expect some sort of alert or filter to pick that up at GNHQ. It's quite possible that a few gullible members might have reacted before warnings appeared on threads.

nonnasusie Sun 08-Oct-17 12:54:18

I received the pm too! It seems to be the non UK residents that were targeted. I've deleted and reported it ! I've only just read both the threads about this so I didn't know it has already been dealt with!! It's frightening what can be done with modern technology!!
