‘Grandmothers engage in fierce debate about loving their grandchildren more than their offspring’.
Don’t really want to admit to looking at Daily Mail on-line but noticed this article today with a link to full thread on Gransnet. I know there was a discussion a while ago about threads being allowed to be used outside of this forum such as Facebook and some members weren’t aware this forum is not private so thought I would just mention it again.

we are, above all, a public forum

So there you have it. Forum posts being seen in public is the most important thing for GN.

The DM's breaking news is often quicker to report an incident than any other sources.

Grannyknot Tue 10-Oct-17 22:02:28

(Don't know why daily had a capital "D"). What I mean is I read extracts of Prue Leith's book, serialised in the DM over a couple of days, last week I think.

Grannyknot Tue 10-Oct-17 21:58:49

I flick through the Mail online (as well as other papers) - they often have good photographic coverage of news items, the app is extremely user-friendly (unlike some other newspapers) and there is no paywall. I actually buy it frequently on a Saturday because I like the TV guide in their Weekend magazine. Just recently I read the Daily instalment of Prue Leith's autobiography, it was hilarious and interesting. So, shoot me! smile

I wonder how many posters there are who dare not admit to reading the DM for the reason you give?
Of course, we will never know, because of the reason you give sad

Evening everyone! Just to clear a couple of things up...we don't supply content to the Daily Mail, but they are free to quote from Gransnet as we are, above all, a public forum.

MotherHubbard Tue 10-Oct-17 20:34:55

Petra?
It’s because I’ve seen the responses posters normally get if they claim their info is from the DM- sorry I didn’t put a link, but don’t know how.

Yes it is a shame that we now have to think very hard before we post about any personal issues we may have unless we change some of the details.
Only problem I have with that is I have a rubbish memory so would forget what I'd said on a previous thread !

Eloethan Tue 10-Oct-17 20:01:25

I'm quite happy to post openly about my political leanings and my opinions on current affairs but I am very cautious about discussing personal/family issues - and this "lifting" of a thread from Gransnet by the Mail reinforces that caution.

I would imagine most people now will feel the same and they will be reluctant to speak about anything personal, which seems a shame because sometimes people need to talk about things that are upsetting them.

Elegran Tue 10-Oct-17 20:00:12

I can't see the DM handing over money for what they can copy for nothing.

Why do you not want to admit to reading the DM. It's not one of the 7 deadly sins, yet, although on GN it's thought of as the spawn of the devil, but in the real world it's still a perfectly normal newspaper to read.

Elegran Tue 10-Oct-17 19:59:23

They might not be doing anything to stop the copying, but I don't think they actively supply stuff. They don't need to, do they, when the newshounds at the DM are always sniffing around for exciting copy to fuel their own circulation?

Riverwalk Tue 10-Oct-17 19:50:04

I think you're being naïve - why would GN not want to appear in the Daily Mail, it's one of the world's most-read online papers!

There are threads from Mumsnet on there almost on a daily basis.

As I said, it's a business.

Elegran Tue 10-Oct-17 19:38:46

Are due, not is.

Elegran Tue 10-Oct-17 19:38:16

I think some direct questions from lolts of members to GN re that copyright notice is due -

"If, as they state, they have copyright, can/do they exercise their right to stop publications such as the DM from direct copying/screenshots of what has been posted?"

Email them at [email protected] asking that very question - or report this post to them and ask the question in the text box that appears.

TriciaF Tue 10-Oct-17 19:30:56

shock we have to be so careful . But it could limit the freedom we feel we have on here to discuss personal problems.

Riverwalk Tue 10-Oct-17 19:28:37

I don't know why everyone is so surprised, GN is a business and we use it free of charge - I suppose they have to make their money somehow!

TriciaF Tue 10-Oct-17 19:28:03

Found it, but haven't read it yet.:

That's shocking! But not unexpected, they seem to be able to publish what they like now.
Quote Elegran:
"Anything you put publicly onto an internet site is in the public domain, and anyone can read it and repeat it."
I must change my username, just in case, but I wasn't on that thread TG.
Have you got a link, MotherHubbard? I've had a look but can't find it.

Elegran, GN own the copyright to anything that is said on this site, as made clear in their Terms & Conditions. The Mail has not only quoted from the thread but printed a screen shot of the comments.

Grannyknot Tue 10-Oct-17 18:56:58

Elegran but you don't know that (material isn't signposted to, or supplied) ...

Elegran Tue 10-Oct-17 18:55:17

But Gransnet have not SUPPLIED stuff to the DM, so don't blame them for what appears in the DM's pages. The DM has copied it - as they copy stuff from wherever they find it. This has happened before and will happen again.

Anything you put publicly onto an internet site is in the public domain, and anyone can read it and repeat it.

jusnoneed Tue 10-Oct-17 18:41:41

Not good to know things are copied from here which includes names.

mcem Tue 10-Oct-17 18:26:03

And despite all the recent debate and complaints, GN made it very clear that they are far more interested in supplying such stuff to news media than in showing sensitivity to posters.
