Gransnet thread in Daily Mail on-line today.

I think that, quite often, fellow gransnetters have pointed it out to people in the past if they feel the poster has given away too much in the way of personal details. Perhaps, in the future we should all not be backwards in coming forwards if we feel something like that has is happening, possibly just by informing HQ and asking them for their opinion of the content.

Hi Lara thanks for the info. 're the name change - that doesn't help if the circumstance(s) described identifies the person. So perhaps GN could also point out that individual posts/replies on a thread will be deleted if the person who had given too much away requests that.

I am not interested in defending nor castigating the Daily Mail . The point is what ever we post is open for consumption by the media and other sources of gossip and it is worth remembering .

I wasn't quoted in the article, but anyway I guess that my pseudonym could apply to a good many of the members of GN!

I think there’s a difference between reporting the opinions of a poll conducted by GN which is part of an initiative to address the problem of loneliness and lifting a whole thread with usernames. The latter is lazy journalism the former was not.

When I googled my username the first thing that came up was a thread I started on GN. Any one knowing me could have worked out who I was and then checked for anything else I had posted.
I feel very vulnerable now and will only post about soupmakers and other domestic trivia in future.

Mine came up with links to news items about Mme Fillon and other people who had Welsh wives!

I googled myself (user name) and looked as far as 13 pages, no mention. It seems I'm a musician, author, toy bear, mathematician (yeah, right!). More pages to go, so someone would have to be very keen to go to those lengths to find me posting a question about soap.... ha ha

The one thread we would like the newspapers to pick up on will go unnoticed.

Perhaps we should all stop posting that link to the DM page and publicising it even further? Expressing shock/horror at them for repeating it while adding a link to the page just increases their visitor count even more.

GG2 GN have stated categorically on another thread that they DO NOT supply stuff to the DM - and it is quite obvious that as GN is a public site, with everything out in the open on the internet, there is no need for them to "sell" what is posted. It has already been given away by the posters!

Did they get paid for this? They are a commercial site after all.

I find it shocking too even though it's happened before and I know the posts not belonging to us but to GN.

Bambam - some user names are identifiable. For example those like "Dottiesgran" or "Fredsmum" in conjunction with in-thread info about location/holiday destination/hobby. Ditto "FenellaS"-type names and even "Bambam" if that's what you're known as in your family circle.

I am a rather risque outfit available from a well known sexy lingerie store. Nothing could be further from the truth.

When I googled my username I found that there are a lot of Maggiemaybes out there, all having interesting times, writing thrillers, making music, designing stuff. Seven pages in I came across myself, droning on about soupmakers....

I'm frightened to Google my name. I'll leave it to anyone who gets an inkling of who I am and decides to check me out, if ever anyone is that interested (which I strongly doubt)

Have any of you googled you username to see what happens?
There was one thing on there I am not happy about but having the name of a variety of a plant although spelling is different might confuse my identity.

Its pretty easy, I would think. Most post about their lives (without too much actual detail) enough that I can remember bits and bobs about the names I see on here.

We all have pseudonyms so I don't understand how we could be recognised.
