On the 'Good Morning' thread Mick often gives us reviews of shows he has seen - especially musicals.

I thought it might be good to have a thread for recommendations.

So, what have you seen that was good....or bad?

Girl from the North Country sounds just up my street. I feel a little trip down to that there London might be in order. smile

I have seen Chicago twice and would go many more times I loved it so much.

So many recommendations, and we've seen and enjoyed many of them. One woman's meat at is another woman's poison though, so recommendations aren't a lot of use. We went to see Wicked, Warhorse and One Man Two Guvnors after rave reviews and "you must see"s from friends and hated them all. My favourites have been Blood Brothers, Miss Saigon, Les Mis, Sweeney Todd and Sunny Afternoon, for what it's worth (not a lot!). I'll definitely be looking out for the Bob Dylan one now though - we're big fans and hadn't heard of it.

Took my dear sister to see Sunny Afternoon for her birthday last year in our local theatre. They did afternoon tea beforehand too (matinee). We both thoroughly enjoyed it. That'll Be The Day is a fantastic show too. Songs through the decades. All very talented singers and musicians.

I saw Young Frankenstein last night - highly recommend it if you're in need of a good laugh.

Great production, singing & dancing but be warned it's shamelessly silly and bawdy! grin

Another musicals' fan here smile I watched many of them and it's the same in case of my favourites but the first one which came into my mind for recommendations is "Les Miserables". It's a very good Broadway show, its plot is based on the famous Victor Hugo's novel and in my opinion it's one of the best in case of literature too. I watched it live and it gave me such strong emotions, I cried during some episodes...
Also I can recommend you "Rent", "The Phantom of The Opera" (there's a very beautiful romantic story), "Hairspray" and "8 Women". If you like historic genre, I can add "Hamilton" here too, an interesting and original show, even I in my age liked it smile It's on stage by the way till the end of this year and the next one link and I can say that in this case no recordings can be compared with the live show smile

Not sure if this helps- live theatre shown at the local cinema is amazing. NT shows Shakespeare, ROH has ballets & operas.

Mel Brook’s Young Frankenstein is hilarious. Not for the easily offended.

I agree with all of the shows recommended here, I have seen most of them, but I agree with you KatyK - Cats was rubbish!! Just don't understand how it has gone on for so long. I love all types of theatre, but Cats just didn't do it for me.

I've just seen Duet for One; Belinda Lang and Oliver Cotton in an awesome performance. It's touring the country, currently in Richmond Surrey, then Edinburgh,Malvern, and Chichester. See it while you can!
Very moving and thought provoking.

Saw a good play at the Northcott in Exeter - The Weir. Very rare we have something good to see down here. You don't know you're born up in London. However, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else but here.

We took my mum (87!) to see The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time - we both loved the book but I was concerned how it would translate to the stage. Very loud and sweary in parts - but in context. It was magnificent and heartwarming. I would recommend it to anyone!

I recommend Kinky Boots, based on the film of the same name.

chattykathy Thu 26-Oct-17 17:29:45

'Beautiful' is now touring. I'm going to see it in Birmingham soon after seeing it in London last year. It's a great show.

dogsmother Thu 26-Oct-17 17:25:31

I do love a good show ? seen lots the last was Kinky Boots and it was fabulous!
I’m going to London again soon and will go toTKTs booth for a bargain again as I haven’t seen Book of Mormon or 42nd Street but will take anything really.

Another vote for Girl from the North Country but probably better if you like Bob Dylan's music. It made me cry. Oslo is brilliant, thought-provoking and funny as well. That nearly made me cry too as the lost opportunity for peace between the Israelis and Palestinians

It's a little 'off-piste' however, I really enjoyed Rob Brydon's show (I Am Standing Up) he's very funny and doesn't rely on bad language or smut to be funny. He can sing too.
Also loved Paul Carrack - he has an amazing voice, saw him in February and have tickets for next year. You may wonder if a laid-back and modest character like him can get the audience on its feet - yes, he most definitely can.

carol58 Thu 26-Oct-17 14:59:45

Oh & Mamma Mia was lovely. Another dancing one! Off to see The Band (Take That) early next year too. Bit of a theme here lol! A little gang of us love to sing & dance so these shows are ideal. We always sit back row of stalls so as not to disturb other's view btw! Also love ballet so seeing The Nutcracker in December with my daughter.

carol58 Thu 26-Oct-17 14:36:20

The Magic of Motown - fabulous. Didn't sit down all evening! Good job everyone else wanted to dance too!

Granny23 Thu 26-Oct-17 13:51:59

Enjoyed both Sunny Afternoon and We will Rock You in Edinburgh but best of all ( for viewers in Scotland only ) is The Steamie . Sister and I saw it a fortnight ago at the McRobert, fifth time for me and it seems to get funnier every time as you know what is coming next.

Our other (Scotland only) favourite is Phil and Aly's St Andrews show in Glasgow - fab-u-lous!

Nvella Thu 26-Oct-17 13:36:51

Not mad about musicals but Girl from the North Country was brilliant - Shirley Henderson was amazing

Willow3 Thu 26-Oct-17 13:31:12

We love musicals and recently been going to these dancing shows. Saw Burn the Floor and Rip it up. Have just booked James and Ola for next March and hope to see Remembering Fred with Aliash and Janette. All the Strictly dancers are doing it. The shows are fantastic and can recommend. Les Mis is my favourite show.

Craftycat Thu 26-Oct-17 13:08:08

Blood Brothers & Girls (Musical of Calendar Girls)

Charleygirl Thu 26-Oct-17 12:43:39

Although I quite like Les Mis for me it was on far too long. I was clock watching.

I have seen Chicago x2 and would go again if the opportunity arose. I enjoyed We Will Rock You but I am an avid Queen fan. Some people did walk out at the first interval so maybe it is not for everybody. My friend and I were standing up singing- we did not empty the theatre.

meandashy Thu 26-Oct-17 12:30:12

I'm going to see 'the steamie ' soon. My friend has seen it already & enjoyed it that much she jumped at the chance to see it again with me. ?
