Just come back from the hospital where they ask you to strip down to bra and pants. I don't wear pants I wear knickers. Apart from the gentlemen here do you wear pants or knickers.smile

Thanks Fennel for the pants pattern link, I'm going to retrieve sewing machine from DD and have a go. I don't mind what they're called, I'd just like them to stop riding up! In NZ you can buy a brand called 'thunderpants' which are brightly patterned and extremely comfortable but they're $28 a pair! They seem to stretch with age though and become even more collossal.

Pants for me. Knickers seems more for little girls, and the word 'panties' makes me cringe. Strangely though, here in NE Scotland we do tend to add ie or ies to some words eg shoppie, postie, sheddie and of course, loonies and quinies (boys and girls).

I say underwear

In Oz it is knickers or undies for girls and jocks for boys. Hence the joke about the olden days when boys often got the basic "jocks and socks" for Xmas.

Knickers for me

Knickers definitely, men wear underpants, at least we no longer refer to them as "unmentionables" tchgrin

Knicks or pants! I’ve always been a crazy mixed up kid!

Daisyanswerdo Wed 06-Dec-17 18:15:18

Tights are pantyhose in the US.

Skyandblossom Wed 06-Dec-17 18:00:25

Knickers. But ‘bra and pants’ sounds better to me than ‘bra and knickers.’

stevej4491 Wed 06-Dec-17 17:29:26

Knickers!

Lilylilo Wed 06-Dec-17 17:05:28

Does it matter?

grumppa Wed 06-Dec-17 16:55:32

Englishmen wear pants. American men wear underpants because they refer to their trousers as pants.

Barleysugar Wed 06-Dec-17 16:52:56

Definitely Pants. I use knickers as a ‘ swear ‘ word .

I seem to remember in Dad's Army Captain Mainwaring called his wife's knickers under pinnings ?

My dear old dad would refer to private parts as nether regions.

I could go on but I won't.

Knickers - I do agree that panties sounds pervie, but will happily refer to panty liners, which isn't very logical.

My Scottish grandmother used to refer to them as knick knacks, not sure if this was a bowdlerisation of knickers?

Oh I had forgotten that Mother called them 'briefs' and always had white ones only as did MIL who nearly died of shock when I suggested she might buy some coloured ones.

123kitty Wed 06-Dec-17 16:04:33

Knicks for me.

David1968 Wed 06-Dec-17 15:22:41

Knickers! I think my USA grandchildren have finally accepted this word....

grandtanteJE65 Wed 06-Dec-17 15:11:53

I say underpants or pants, having grown up in the Glasgow area where saying "knickers" was considered dreadfully posh and snobbish.

My sister's godmother who managed a draper's shops talked about "briefs" to her customers if these women were buying for themselves, underpants, if they were buying for little girls and knickers if they were shopping for their mothers or other elder women who wore the kind of garment that had legs. Boys' underpants were called "linings" for some odd reason.

Panties is a disgusting Americanism that to me reeks of fetish. I have a friend who insists on calling them pants. My mum used to call them Knick knock noodles. I mostly call them by the Spanish term bragas.

goldengirl Wed 06-Dec-17 15:10:00

My Nan also wore directoire knickers and my mum always said they weren't for her when she bought them for my Nan. I remember Nan wearing them when I was small and she couldn't have been as old as I am now - and I certainly don't wear them!!! Mum used to wear 'briefs'

Called them knickers for daughters but when had son called them pants! Grandaughter came along and we carried on with pants-potty trained and at nursery-she told me one day " they are knickers Nanny!". That's what the lady at nursery calls them. So that's us told!

dysongirl Wed 06-Dec-17 14:39:58
