Just come back from the hospital where they ask you to strip down to bra and pants. I don't wear pants I wear knickers. Apart from the gentlemen here do you wear pants or knickers.smile

I like the word 'knickers' and wear 'em with pride.

Bluebelle
What are 'drawers' with elastic in the legs grin

I'm a bit ambivalent really. I grew up with knickers, changed to saying pants in my teens, reverted to knickers as a sort of joke somewhere in my twenties and have stuck with knickers , though occasionally still say pants! My DD always says knickers. My MiL who always wanted to be 'respectable' used to call them panties as she thought it sounded refined. She would have been horrified to hear that people think it pervy! My auntie used to call them 'blinds for the sitting room' which , as a child, I thought extremely witty!

I tend to go with 'knickers' or 'undies' . Perhaps because the word pants makes me think of school & the PE pants we had to wear over our knickers & under our PE skirts- Uuugggh, how I detested those heavy brown pants!!
Loved Lemongrove's comment - my undies tend to be more the round'em up & pen'em in variety these days. More over worked collie than show poodle grin

Is anyone ready yet for beige crimplene trousers/slacks/pants to go over the big knickers? tchgrin

Pants or briefs. Knickers are forever in my mind associated with the navy blue ones we had for school.

Barmeyoldbat Wed 06-Dec-17 10:28:37

Yes I am a knicks or knickers person. My mil always wore Tena pants in her later years and called them her pants. So I am not ready for pants yet

Knickers every time!

Skweek1 Wed 06-Dec-17 10:22:31

Pants every time. When I was a teenager we had a German family whose different daughters came to us each year as au pairs (still friends). The first time one girl came to us, we suggested that as she would do a little cooking, we should get her an apron. She told us she had one at home and would ask her mum to send it. A few days later her parcel came and she told us that her knickers had arrived. Poor girl was so mortified and embarrassed, but we all teased her gently!

Did this used to be U versus Non U?
As a child we always used Knickers (school uniform was navy knickers with white liners!), but when I started childminding for posher families they referred to pants, which I'd always thought were just for men.

When my daughter was small, she started crying when I was helping her get dressed, saying she wanted different knickers. She was trying to explain, and said she wanted "big bum knickers". That's what they've always been called since. smile

I wear Nana knickers, started off as a joke and has somehow remained.

Culag Wed 06-Dec-17 09:33:26

Pants !

Bellanonna Wed 06-Dec-17 09:19:48

Knick knocks to the GC. I don’t really use the word myself but would say knickers. To an outsider (e.g. nurse or doctor) I’d say underwear.

DanniRae Wed 06-Dec-17 09:03:15

PS. I have more than one pair, of course, because they take about a week to dry. So one pair on and one pair in the wash!!

(Just in case I had better point out that I AM JOKING) tchgrin

DanniRae Wed 06-Dec-17 09:00:04

MOnica - you have described exactly the type of knickers that I wear. Mine are peach coloured and really comfortable!! tchwink

JackyB Wed 06-Dec-17 06:27:20

I think knickers sounds coarse and I would find it out of place if I was asked to strip to my knickers at the doctor's. Couldn't they say "strip to your underwear"?

In German the word is "slip", too - most confusing. It's not as if, at my age, I "slip" them on. More like a hopping and rocking, grunting and puffing, till I'm there!

I wear knickers. My American friend wears panties.

M0nica Wed 06-Dec-17 00:08:10

Pants. Knickers are great big things made from lock knit cotton with elasticated legs and waist and space to keep your hanky up the leg (at least that is what our elocution teacher did)

mumofmadboys Wed 06-Dec-17 00:05:34

Definitely pants. Hate the word knickers!

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 05-Dec-17 23:19:31

Knickers (of course tchgrin), but I have said pants occasionally. DH wears underpants or pants.

annodomini Tue 05-Dec-17 23:18:52

Does it matter?

DanniRae Tue 05-Dec-17 23:03:37

Knickers - Men wear pants

grannyactivist Tue 05-Dec-17 18:57:53

Trying hard...., but no, I can't remember when I last had any conversation that may have included the words knickers or pants. As a child I wore knickers, I always checked that my daughters had clean knickers (or keks as we would say in Manchester) - but in all honesty I don't generally have reason to say anything about them at all. And I really have no preference as long as people understand what I mean if I have call to use either term.
