Brussel sprouts on their stems. Are they worth the money?

I have always ignored these because I thought that they were a complete and utter rip off where cost is concerned.
Just before Xmas, I bought one purely because the Brussel Sprouts ready picked and bagged, looked like they were already past their best and would not last. I paid the extra and bought the Brussels on their stems.
I used the last of them yesterday, they did 3 meals, and they were as fresh as the day that I bought them. That was over 2 weeks ago!
I am a complete convert now.
In fact, I bought another one at Aldi today for just 79p.

I love sprouts, they are one of my favourite veg. I have bought them on the stalk for years, they last so much longer than the loose ones.

I like to buy them on the stalk if possible

We have tried growing them but without success.

We always go to our local farm shop for them. They are about 75p each and very freshly picked.

I always buy a sprout stick at Christmas - usually about £1 from our local market. We got family Christmas lunch and family NY Eve dinner off it and they kept very well. I actually like frozen sprouts, and I buy them because DH hates sprouts, so it means I can cook just a few for myself.

I bought sprouts on a stem for Christmas for the same reason as cookie and they lasted for ages. I will definitely buy them next time.

They're the best!!

Far superior to bags of sprouts and I don't think they are that much more expensive.

Well blow me down, I never knew Brussels sprouts grew on a stem! Never thought about it too much but as they look like little cabbages I sort of thought they grew like cabbages! I should be embarrassed to admit to that ???

Me too, MesMopTop. I vaguely knew they grew on stalky things but have never tried them. As a sprout lover I shall rush to the market today and buy some. We live and learn.

Always buy them this way. Tastiest sprouts of all.

FarNorth Wed 10-Jan-18 10:41:09

I always thought the stems were a rip off too. So I've learnt something.
Thanks, cookie.

'Fairy cabbages' - that's what we used to tell the DC grin

(But I did know that they grew on stalks)

I’ll be on the hunt to see if I can find any on stems now! Only ever seen them loose and some are bigger than eggs. I love sprouts, boiled or steamed with a wee bit of butter.

I always buy stalks on the stem. I over bought at Christmas and they kept beautifully for a fortnight.

I also get the stalks with the brussel heads still on and cut them off and use them like cabbage.

I bought a fresh one stem this morning from Aldi after finishing my Christmas one on Monday we love them they are always so fresh and firm.

GrandmaMoira Wed 10-Jan-18 13:20:19

I would buy on a stalk if they were sold locally but I've only ever seen them at a Farmers Market where I don't usually go, partly because most things are very expensive.

There is only one thing missing, and it grows at the top of the stalk. Brussel Tops as they are called.
These are the mini open cabbages that grow at the top of the stem. A few years ago, they could be bought in any greengrocer and are the most utterly delicious greens. I heard that they are now used for animal food.
Does anyone else remember these? For me they are 2nd best to the brussels themselves.

MissAdventure Wed 10-Jan-18 18:42:24

Oh I absolutely love brussel tops!

The worse thing is picking sprouts from an icy stalk on the muddy allotment!

Jalima1108 Wed 10-Jan-18 19:17:52

Can you just chop off the whole stalk and take it home - or is it too tough?

Nelliemoser Wed 10-Jan-18 23:24:02

Do they cause less evil wind the longer they remain on the stem? wink

I hope the DH doesn't get to hear of this. He loves sprouts and the rest of us hate them. The only comfort I have with the Christmas sprouts is that they go off quickly and there is an end of them.

Maggiemaybe Thu 11-Jan-18 10:17:55

DH grows ours, so they're usually just a few minutes old when we cook them. smile But it's reassuring to know that some people didn't know they grew on stalks. Mumsnet had someone admit the other day that they were in their 30s and were embarrassed to have just found out that pineapples don't grow on trees. I'm twice her age and didn't know that either. shock

I bought a sprout stalk with the top still on and remembered that these leaves were good to eat and so they were! And have just got back from a month in Spain. We ferried to North Spain and then drove right across the country. Best plus factor was that we could take things we couldn't take on a plane; including a big fat sprout stalk, which kept in the fridge until Christmas so we had fresh sprouts with our Christmas dinner. Was a bit miffed to discover sprouts for sale on the fruit and veg stalls in the local markets this year, as they haven't been in previous years, but ours were British!!
