How do you define someone as common?

Sory not to have read through the thread, but the first thing that came to my mind was drinking beer in a pub from the bottle - I gather that's the norm now

Oh but how I wanted a pair! Had to settle for kitten heels, which were not as 'in'.

White stilettos - very common!

My mother thought that it was common to wear white shoes- this was in the days long before trainers- she meant mainly high heels I think.

There were other things such as lipstick being too red and she classed that person as a hussy. Tattoos on a female were also classed as common.

I'm surprised everyone has taken it in a good humoured way. I had thought people might be offended, but I think all it has done has shown that its a load of old claptrap really. We are who we are.

Indeed it is Grandma70s. Lots of humour in many of the comments but I guess for some people it is still important, which makes me feel a bit sad.

Grandetante65 I went to a state school ...convent AND girls only .The local boys school was half a mile away .West of Scotland .The two were merged in the late 80's .The nuns were mainly really lovely women one ot two who could be a bit snobby...which seems odd given their vocation...but it was noticeable to most of us that the girls whose dads were doctors or laywers or who boarded were spoken to in a different manner from the rest of us

Money has nothing to do with it. In Hull we had lots of wealthy trawler skipper's wives who often wore lots of gold jewellery. They were according to my gran "common".

Gabriellea I couldn't agree more. Even if you try not to be judgemental, you can really only make a conscious decision not to do it. I've always believed in thinking the best of someone, but if someone breaks my trust I find it very hard to fully trust them again.

annsixty I would love to have my eyebrows microbladed which is the more recent method of tattooing eyebrows. It is expensive though and only lasts a couple of years as it fades gradually. But I'm more concerned about the finished look and the technician doing what was agreed. I don't know anyone in real life who's had theirs done and I would prefer a recommendation from someone with results I like.

I know someone who is very well off, husband is a very successful business man, daughter a lawyer, she herself very well known in various national charities who has her eyebrows tattooed on . They look very natural.

I agree with all you wrote but if I listed everything I thought was common it would be a long list indeed.

I suppose that having good manners and courtesy define whether you are common or not, and you can have those no matter how ordinary you are.
Personally, I have a prejudice against people who don’t keep their feet decent. I’m a retired nurse, and during my days in Outpatients, I couldn’t believe how many people came in knowing they would be undressed and examined, yet had disgusting feet and dirty toenails. I think that’s really common!
So there you have it - some people are foot-fetishists and others are foot-snobs like me.

It is common to drink from a saucer ( according to my Grandmother) unless one is a cat.

My mum told me that anyone who wore an ankle chain was 'not the best.
There was a lady who lived nearby who wore one and was always beautifully dressed (almost always in black with colourful scarves) with her long black hair in a low chignon. To me, she looked exotic, Spanish and her colouring bore that out.
Common, to me, means anyone who uses base language, gets paralytic on nights out, wears football tops when not at matches, white trainers in town, tatts, eating with their forks upturned and with elbows out ( lots of chefs do this too) and eating from a plate on their knees watching tv. Also people who say fort, fink and free instead of thought, think and three among other language no-nos.

Same here Bellanonna and Bluebell...the consequences of being seen without a hat or eating an ice cream were quite severe! Reverend mother always seemed to find out!
