Female screen icons

Just spent time with DD2 and SIL. DH is a talented artist so they've asked him to draw three screen icons for the wall of their new home cinema (yes I know-it's in the cellar!). James Bond was an easy choice, Edward Fox in Day of the Jackal, Jason Bourne, Harrison Ford but what about a female star?
Marilyn Monroe is obvious but they would really like someone of their generation-they're in their forties. well folks, any suggestions?

Grace Kelly lived up to her name (IMHO)

Jalima1108 Tue 23-Jan-18 19:24:17

She is; however, today's actresses don't seem to have the glamour that the old Hollywood stars had.

I don't think that there is any doubt that Meryl Streep is the most iconic big screen actress of our generation.

I didn't always think so because OH fancied her and I didn't like her because she's slimmer and prettier than me, but I have to accept that she is a very good actress, versatile and amazing in so many diverse roles over so many years. She's brilliant at accents, very prolific and as a person she does seem to have her head screwed on.

She's certainly versatile!

Jalima1108 Tue 23-Jan-18 17:50:30

gladiatorial
moved on a bit from Russell Crowe then?

Russell Crowe?

Tegan2 Tue 23-Jan-18 17:48:49

The Hunger Games are a trilogy of films about a young freedom fighter called Katniss who is up against a despotic dictatorship that makes it's subjects fight each in a gladiatorial sort of way.

Jalima1108 Tue 23-Jan-18 17:47:28

I thought Katniss could be the name of the film that this Jennifer Whoever was in ....
oh dear

Anniebach Tue 23-Jan-18 17:45:36

I don't watch American TV programmes , well I did watch The Waltons and Lost but think British tv much, much more enjoyable than American

Oh so that's how you cross through!

Newquay Tue 23-Jan-18 17:43:45

salivating

Newquay Tue 23-Jan-18 17:43:26

Oh Jalima you beat me to it-I said the same. . . who is Jennifer and Katniss??
It IS Sean Connery that they've chosen funnily enough.
DH is, as we speak, -salivating-looking for posters of Gillian Anderson. Not sure it's their time though. We sent them a poster of Tippi Hedren in The Birds and they asked who that was!

Jalima1108 Tue 23-Jan-18 17:27:28

grin
the voice is appealing and he looks OK, jut don't like the sound of the real person!
(not your DH, I am sure he is lovely)

I've never seen the Hunger Games, are they on Sky?

Cherrytree59 Tue 23-Jan-18 17:13:52

Jalima

Did I get the spelling correct?

Please don't stick pins in S.C sad
DH has a slight Connery look about him
(the aged mature version)grin

Tegan2 Tue 23-Jan-18 16:53:39

Jennifer Lawrence is Katniss [sp] in the Hunger Games.

Jalima1108 Tue 23-Jan-18 16:41:39

I used to wish I looked like her

Cherrytree59 Tue 23-Jan-18 16:40:04

My Dad thought Alexandra Bastido (Sp?) had a lovely a sculpted face with high cheek bones.

Jalima1108 Tue 23-Jan-18 16:33:20

Bond has to be Connery ,the original and best
Definitely not, I would be sticking pins into his image.

Jalima1108 Tue 23-Jan-18 16:32:28

Obviously I don't go to the cinema enough - who is Jennifer and what is Katniss?

Alexa Tue 23-Jan-18 16:28:59

Katy Jurado in High Noon.

Maggiemaybe Tue 23-Jan-18 15:54:10

I’d forgotten that sketch, Fennel - so funny! grin

Tegan2 Tue 23-Jan-18 14:35:12

I suppose that, as it's to be drawn on a wall, it has to be instantly recognisable. So, Monro, Princess Leia and Jennifer as Katniss to me show the progression of iconic images of women over the years. Although I'd prefer Audrey Hepburn to Monro [as she was also a pretty amazing person in real life]...

trisher Tue 23-Jan-18 13:57:31

What about Gillian Anderson? One of the best actors of her generation. The trouble is she is so good she looks different each time. Don't know how old your DD2 is, but for my DSs the X Files and Scully were part of them growing up.

Day6 Tue 23-Jan-18 13:42:10

I agree that present day film stars just don't have the glamour of the older ones. Perhaps they are too familiar? We see so many films now, of all genres. I don't see real star quality in any modern actress. Sorry - actor.

Meg Ryan
Reese Witherspoon
Jodie Foster

I never tire of Eileen Atkins or Maggie Smith but there is no glamour there!
