The one song that still moves you

For me, the one song that can always bring a lump to my throat is Eva Cassidy singing SONGBIRD. The first time I heard it, I was entering somebody's dining room with a group of people just behind me. This song was playing softly in the background and I literally stopped in my tracks and gasped. (Of course, everyone else bumped into me from behind!) What song does the same for you?

Gosh you have all been busy reminising since I dropped in this morning. Some lovely songs. Just remembered Charlie Lansborough and I will love you all my life, dedicated to me by my husband on a radio station for my 50 th birthday.

Even now, at the ripe age of 57, it brings a lump to my throat.

November Rain by Guns N Roses.

Do you think this thread should be renamed 'The many songs.......'

KatyK Matt Monro was my Dad's favourite and he sang most of his songs. I love listening to all his songs, but my favourite is Born Free because of the film. Our first dog was called Elsa.

Another vote for Adele from me too. I could listen to her all day.

Add You're My World by Cilla to my list too. Fabulous song to howl along with in the car! grin

I’m getting a lump in my throat just reading this post.

Matt Monroe’s Portrait of my Love has the power to literally stop me in my tracks it’s so poignant. Gladys Knight’s version of The Way We Were is very emotional and it brings back both happy and sad memories.

starlily I'm glad you and your husband got to experience real love, even if it turned out to be for such a short time..

Shesanana Mon 05-Feb-18 16:16:44

It Was On A Starry Night makes me cry. The first time I heard it was when my son and the rest of his infant class sang it. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. That was 30 years ago.

Bridge Over Troubled Water is another tearjerker for me. I remember my Mum really liked it too.

Lots of lovely songs mentioned here. I too love Mozart's Ave verum corpus and the Lacrimosa from Mozart's requiem (plus Faure's Cantique de Jean Racine and the Agnus Dei from his Requiem and the Benedictus from the Armed Man by Karl Jenkins.) On the other hand for pure sentimental tear jerking you can't beat Mary Hopkins' 'Those were the days' and also 'Sunrise sunset' from Fiddler on the roof

Days by the Kinks

MissAdventure, thank you. It had such a great impact on me when I heard it for the first time, and opened the floodgates for the tears I couldn't shed even at his funeral.

kittylester Mon 05-Feb-18 16:04:23

I prefer the Ed Sheeran song with Beyonce - it's so beautiful.

Bitter Sweet Symphony of Life was played at the funeral of a boy who was killed (aged 16) crossing the road outside school DD3 was in his class and all the children lined the path to the chapel while this was being played. As if that wasn't bad enough, the children were all crying and his mum went to each of them telling them not to be sad but be happy that they had known him. sad

Bridge Over Troubled Water, played at my Brothers funeral, and The Prayer played at my Husbands funeral, beautiful songs, but make me weepy.

newnanny Mon 05-Feb-18 15:44:59

You'll Never Walk Alone - Jerry and Pacemakers. My son huge LFC fan and told us he wants it at his funeral. It makes me sad to hear it. Eienaldi - The Waves - i chose this music for both of my dearest aunties at their funerals. They both loved waking along beach watching the waves. She's the One - Daniel Beddingfield - our wedding song. I Don't Want to Talk About it - Rod Stewart - reminds me of breaking up with first love and thinking I would never fall in love again.

Bathsheba Mon 05-Feb-18 15:40:05

'Time to say Goodbye' by Sarah Brightman. Don't know if anyone's said that yet?

Herbie9 Mon 05-Feb-18 15:33:57

"Happy" by Pharrell Williams. This brings happy memories of our dear little grandson and was played at his funeral.

NannaM Mon 05-Feb-18 15:17:51

Oh yes - Dolly Parton "I will always love you", Dan Hill "Sometimes when we touch", Simon and Garfunkel " Bridge over Troubled Water", Phil Collins "True Colours", James Taylor "One Morning in May", Elvis "You Were Always on My Mind". And of course - Elton John "Sad Songs"!!

Magicnonna Mon 05-Feb-18 14:56:28

Imagine, by John Lennon wow!

loopyloo Mon 05-Feb-18 14:48:27

Puff the magic Dragon, so poignant that children grow up ( as they should) but grow away from us.

Mary59nana Mon 05-Feb-18 14:41:42

As soon as I read your headline Songbird Eva Cassidy came into my head.
In fact I had to double check I didn’t write the post
