The one song that still moves you

For me, the one song that can always bring a lump to my throat is Eva Cassidy singing SONGBIRD. The first time I heard it, I was entering somebody's dining room with a group of people just behind me. This song was playing softly in the background and I literally stopped in my tracks and gasped. (Of course, everyone else bumped into me from behind!) What song does the same for you?

Rosie that is such a powerful song, and so terribly poignant.

Oh gosh, yes, FarNorth, Streets of London! That was one of my mother's favourites, and it's always brought a lump to my throat too.
I just had to find it on YouTube and listen - I found this recording. It includes a short interview with Ralph McTell, in which he explains that he wrote the song originally about Paris, but changed it when he found there was already a song about the poor people of Paris. And of course, as he says, the words could apply to any major city in the world. But he was in Paris at the time, and it was the poor of that city which inspired the song.

WilmaKnickersfit (about favourite songs being spoilt). The night my first marriage broke up, I crept downstairs and played the Bridge Over Troubled Water album over and over until dawn, while I cried my eyes out. Many years have passed since then, I was only 23, but that album still hurts me to hear, especially the title song. Boo Hoo!smile

Mozart, Ave Verum Corpus. Not a long piece but the music sort of circles up to you and hugs you.

Maggie my Dad sang it to me too and I should have mentioned it earlier and I have both the Jim Reeves and the Val Doonican versions on my tablet.

Would add Sometimes When We Touch by Dan Hill and Time in New England by Barry Manilow too.

I have a play list of ballads that has so many of the songs mentioned on this thread. I could keep choosing songs for days! grin

Does anyone else find that a song you love can be spoiled for you?

Years ago when Terry Wogan first played Eva Cassidy, I fell in love with Fields of Gold. I bought about 5 or 6 of her albums and played them all the time. Then Cancer Research used Fields of Gold in an advert. It was a very moving advert and choosing a song by Eva Cassidy was fitting because she died of cancer.

Unfortunately I couldn't listen to her albums anymore because I felt too sad. I lost my Dad to cancer and her songs reminded me of the advert and the loss of my Dad. sad I don't have her albums anymore because I gave them away, but I feel like listening to her music again so this is a great thread. wink

So many of these (particularly the Leonard Cohens). And I'd like to add another Eva Cassidy - I Know You By Heart - and Abba's Slipping Through My Fingers. And Scarlet Ribbons, which my father sang to me.

If Passing Strangers gets you, have listen to Niel Sadaka singing I Miss The Hungry Years. Even writing it makes me sad.
I've spent my life quoting Pegggy Lee saying "Is that all there is" grin
Another ( besides many on here) is Gladys knight singing Your the best thing that's ever happened to me.

So many beautiful songs already mentioned. Loving You by Minnie Ripperton. Not only because I love the song and the wonderful memories it brings to the fore but also because she died not long after recording it. Another song which I have always found a tear jerker is Puff the Magic Dragon. He dies at the end, always found that hard.
