I don't think it is a bad thing to enjoy a glass of wine in the evenings, especially if had with a meal. In France people usually have wine with their dinner and, as far as I can tell, it rarely gets out of hand, people drink sensibly. Having got to be almost 63 years old I must be doing something right! My granddaughters bought me 6 bottles of wine for Christmas. We had one with Christmas dinner, one at New Year (between five of us) and I used the last bit of the last bottle in Spag Bol last week (yes, some of the other bottles went into cooking (Beef Stew etc) as well, especially the French wine they bought me). As to people not drinking years ago - it was very common for men to call in at the pub before going home in many communities, or to pop out for a pint or two in the evenings - wine generally wasn't available then but beer, stout and guinness certainly were, I remember being told by my Aunts that I should drink a bottle of stout a day when I was pregnant for the iron content!
