Lovely sons-in-law

There are a lot of sad posts about awkward DILS - and I really feel for those involved in these difficult relationships.

We hear little about sons-in-law; so I just wanted to say that I have 3 of these creatures and they are lovely!

Anyone else blessed with lovely sons-in-law?

Mine are all very different in personality and background, but they share a devotion to our DDs, a sense of integrity, honesty, a willingness to work hard to support their families and kindness. We love them all.

I also am blessed with a lovely son-in-law, would not swop him for anything (even though he is a Welshman!!) only joking!

We have one DD and rue the day she met her husband. He has destroyed our family as we knew it. She is isolated from everyone. If he became an ex sil I would be delighted.

I have 3 Sons in Law, all as different as chalk from cheese and all wonderful with their wives, my 3 daughters, and great Dads to their children. I've recently moved nearer DD1 and SiL. He turned up unannounced with ladder and saw last week and spent half a day removing the climber which was eating up the front of my new house. Then he and SiL no3 who was visiting for the w/e played Pickfords & relocated my furniture after I'd decided to swap dining for sitting room. The 3rd, who lives in Oz, bravely puts up with me for weeks on end when I visit. Not many blokes would do that! I am so thankful for them all

I have one lovely daughter in law and one lovely son in law, no complaints whatsoever and I know I'm lucky

So sorry to hear about your DH Blue45 but glad you are receiving brilliant support from your SiL.

My DH died last week and my lovely SIL has gone above and beyond the call of duty. He is a treasure and he worships the ground my DD walks on.

Lovely son in law and daughter in law - lucky me

Great post Luckygirl,
Spot on Radicalnan, couldn't agree more.
Never too late to say something nice Pollyperkins.
Reading about all the wonderful sons-in-law could it be that we mothers of sons have done a splendid job!
Is there a 'tongue in cheek' icon?

A very dear friend of mine coined the term sin-in-law when her daughter moved in with her partner. I now use it, as I have both a son- and a sin-in law; both are lovely young men

missdeke Thu 08-Mar-18 14:57:13

My only criteria for a son in law is that they make my daughters happy. Unfortunately I lost one last year at the untimely age of 36, but he absolutely worshipped my daughter so that was good enough for me.

Not SIL?

narrowboatnan Thu 08-Mar-18 13:21:01

I am blessed with a lovely SiL. We get on well and he has, on a couple of occasions, volunteered as our cabin boy when we were on the move and he had time off from his job. I’m a bad influence though, I introduced him to Pirate Coffee (add a large dash of rum) and tried to fatten him up with bacon sandwiches.

pollyperkins Thu 08-Mar-18 13:19:00

We are lucky with DiL and SiL. The latter has his faults (don't we all) but he's a good husband and father and right for DD and you can't say fairer than that.

pollyperkins Thu 08-Mar-18 13:16:46

My sons MiL kept telling me recently how wonderful he is and I agreed. Afterwards my DH said I should have reciprocated and said how fond of his wife (her daughter) we are (which is true) but it didn't occur to me and I'm not one for gushing. Its a bit late to tell her now!

We have 2 SiLs. They are very different, though have some common interests, but I am very fond of both.
One is the primary carer for twin GS and GD (4 in July) and has been since they were 1 and DD went back to work. It has been a steep learning curve but he’s doing a great job.

Goodbyetoallthat Thu 08-Mar-18 12:26:56

What a heartening thread. We have 1 SIL & if I am honest we weren't that keen to start with but 10 years & 1 DGS we get along fine. We aren't perfect either (despite what DH thinks wink) so it is a bit of a compromise really.

I went into shock after acute epigastric pain on Sunday evening and was ambulanced off to A&E, where I remained overnight.

One SIL spent the night with my OH (who has PD), fetched in food, lit the fire etc. in the morning. The other did our shopping and dug out the snow on our drive. All done with no fuss and great respect for OH's problems.

They are just gems!

Nanny123 Thu 08-Mar-18 12:18:33

I have 2 wonderful SIL and what’s makes them so special is they both adore my 2 daughters and are brilliant dads - what more could I ask for

Lilyflower Thu 08-Mar-18 12:01:18

My working class, Irish mother married a man, my father, who was less than chivalrous, shall we say, and left him. She has always been full of praise for her sons-in-law and says that my sister and I were lucky to find them.

Luck, of course, had nothing to do with it.

Nevertheless, it is worth mentioning that there are some very good and lovely men in the world when we hear so much about the bad ones. My son is as nice as his father too.

We have 5 son in laws who have been absolute stars. My husband has been in ICU for 4 weeks now and they have all held the fort at home so their wives could visit and stay with me. I have not been alone during this time and daughters have slept at our home leaving their husbands to take care of their children and continuing to work. They have taken leave to fit in with emergency visits to ICU and driven for hours so their wives could be here. We feel very blessed to have these lovely men in our lives

Coconut Thu 08-Mar-18 11:04:03

I am so blessed as I adore both my Dil’s and my SIL too ... my 3 have had some aloof partners previously, but these 3 they have settled down with, priceless and I love them all dearly.

Luckygirl what a great post! And radicalnan what a great comment. There are many positive people who really do look on the bright side of things. My daughter met my son-in-law when they were quite young - he was 19 and she was 20. They married 6 years later and now (married 11 years) are so happy, and so in tune with each other on raising my 2 DGC. He is very quiet with me, not a barrel of laughs as I might have enjoyed, but he absolutely adores my daughter, is a wonderful husband, father (and provider) and he has so much respect for me and my relationship with my family (I am the weirdo in the general scheme of family things - divorced, living in another country, running off to Eastern Europe etc etc), so I am very grateful for him and love him to bits.

I have a lovely son in law who has helped me with odd jobs and moving house. The best thing though is how happy he makes my daughter-just seeing their strong bond makes me happy!
