Beards; yea or nay?

My brother has been to visit, and I was delighted to see he has removed his beard. I then tried to think if I knew of anyone whose looks are improved by sporting a beard, and couldn’t think of anyone.
What do others think?

I find beards extremely sexy. Much prefer my men with facial hair!
(I mean beards that are cared for, not the wild unkempt look of blokes who just can't be bothered looking for the razor!)

To Grandma70s, my own grandma, who passed away in her eighties in 1966 always reckoned that kissing a man without a moustache was like eating an egg without salt = tasteless. Mind you she was rather partial to soldiers.

I guess you have been missing out for a very long time. I have a short goatee and two sons with beards so if you want to try the difference sometime..........! ;)

Not for me thank you. No matter how inaccurate, I have this constant image of creepy crawlies foraging around for all the food therein. I've heard the argument about shaving skin rash but, to me, it smacks of laziness. As for the 'designer' stubble. Neither one thing or the other in my opinion but certainly engenders a thought of scruffy or dirty. Again, no thanks.

Don’t like them. Much prefer clean shaven. Don’t like kissing men with beards. Don’t the huge number of men wearing beards realise they’re following fashion like sheep? I’ve heard of people shaving them off because there are so many men with beards now and they want to look different. Same with tattoos which I hate. Hardly any men without them nowadays and not easy to remove if they get fed up with them. I blame David Beckham! He is responsible for the explosion of tattoos by football fans and others, and for the strange craze of men wearing diamond earrings. I’ve even seen boys of about 10 with them in. UGH ? on all counts.

Grandma70 I think I don't like beards because my father always said that men who have them have something to hide - so it isn't just your feeling - perhaps your parents said the same thing to you! I don't actually believe that but what we are told by our parents does colour our opinions. One of my BiLs has a beard which comes and goes - usually a little goatee which I really dislike but I forgive him because he is such a lovely person!

I can immediately think of 2 people who certainly looked better with a beard. Jimmy Hill, the football pundit and Paul Laidlaw, antique expert.

I think it depends on the face which goes with it, some men look great with beards and it's hard to imagine them without them, such as Noel Edmonds or Richard Branson.
A handsome chap like Rick Edwards looks great and would no doubt be equally handsome if he were clean shaven - lucky man.
However, I'm not keen on goatee beards* as I don't think they're at all flattering and moustaches can look rather suspect. A ZZ Top type beard which is really long isn't too flattering either IMO - I can imagine bits of food in it. *Makes me chuckle if it's long enough to be plaited.

Just wonder why its become so fashionable. My brother was in the RN and had a beard most of the time but it wasn't generally fashionable then for civilian's.

ooonana Mon 02-Apr-18 09:55:23

Ok until they get food trapped! Also sometimes as men age they don’t trim them very well and they look jacked about? whatever makes you happy ??

Smithy Mon 02-Apr-18 09:54:32

I too hate beards and moustaches. Theory make young men look old. Also I think about bits of food , crumbs etc could be hiding in they're. Ugh!

I like a hairy bloke. Both husbands and both significant others have had beards but they must be neat and well groomed.

DH grew a moustache a couple of years ago for Movember and grew a goatee beard at the same time. It really suited him and he kept it for about a year before deciding to shave it off. He is silver haired and it looked very distinguished (imho)!

Skweek1 Mon 02-Apr-18 09:37:38

I loathe beards. Was really chuffed when DH was persuaded to get rid of his, but both he and DS have decided to grow them again, much to my disgust and DS's is really scruffy.

My handsome, open and honest husband has a beard and a moustache. He looks very sexy. Without it he looks too much like his now departed mother!
All of our sons sport beard and moustache most of the time, they too look good either way and surely it beats having to shave every day.
I'm the only one that keeps mine under strict control.

pen50 Mon 02-Apr-18 09:24:20

Loathe facial hair. Had a boyfriend at uni who sported a moustache (which did suit him, says she, grudgingly) and every time we kissed I could tell what he'd last been eating. Yuck. Spotted him at a 40 years on reunion last summer; he's still got one! Current squeeze is sufficiently unhairy - except on his head, lucky chap - that he can't grow much more than a bit of fuzz. And that suits me fine.

DH has had a beard since I’ve known him. He shaved it off just once and that was only last year when he was working as a film extra. I was so shocked -it wasn’t my dh at all! It’s obviously grown back, but he’s changed from a very precise German professor look to a much more modern short style which really suits him. Ds is currently sporting a full bushy beard which I’m not that keen on but it won’t stay. He’ll be back to designer stubble before too long.

Harris27 Mon 02-Apr-18 09:16:24

2 of my sons have them and suit them. I don't like beards but my husband has gone grey and now sports a designer grandad beard it suits him!

Marianne1953 Mon 02-Apr-18 09:09:40

Always nay. I hate bodily hair on both men & Women

jenpax Mon 02-Apr-18 09:07:55

I have to say I don’t like beards or moustaches! Two of my SIL have beards of the hipster variety so popular these days, I don’t like either beard but of course I have never said so as it’s none of my business! It’s definately a personal choice.

Jillsewing Mon 02-Apr-18 09:06:09

I hate all beards I have never ever seen a man I like in them. They make me shudder. When they are long I hate them more. I am so waiting for the fashion to change!

sodapop Mon 02-Apr-18 08:44:40

I think its just a case of beards and moustaches suit some people and not others. I must admit to not liking straggly unkempt beards. I do like them to be neatly trimmed for looks and hygiene. Not sure if my moustache suits me or not !!

Greyduster Mon 02-Apr-18 08:38:54

I’m afraid I’m not a lover of beards. DH had a moustache at one time, and I could just about put up with that. My son has had a beard for some time, and on the couple of times he has shaved it off, it has taken years off him! I think it makes him look like Bluto out of the Popeye cartoons grin!

Grandma70s Mon 02-Apr-18 08:11:06

I was only saying what I have always felt. I’m not saying I’m right. Now beards are so much more common than they were, I expect there is a greater variety of men who have them. They were very unusual when I was younger. ( I am older than many of you.)

When I was at university, the only person who had a beard was the extremely pretentious, but quite talented president of the Dramatic Society. I expect that has affected my opinion for life!

Tea and cake Mon 02-Apr-18 08:03:23

Santa type beards, no! A bit of long stubble, yes!

kittylester Mon 02-Apr-18 07:35:13

My DH hasn't got anything to hide Grandma70s
