DH has just come back from Waitrose with a, one, single vanilla pod - £6.99 ??

NonnaW Tue 03-Apr-18 12:15:17

Ouch! They’re not normally quite that expensive shock

Phew just checked jar - there are two pods.... is that an OK price?

I've only ever bought one once, years ago as I usually slosh in Madagascan vanilla extract (well, not slosh exactly!).

I watched a bit of Michael MacIntyre last night (a repeat) and he was talking about shopping in Waitrose

ps I like Waitrose too (and they do have offers)
I like Lidl as well

I couldn’t get one in Lidl or Sainsbury’s. I get my vanilla extract from Lakeland and that bottle is pretty near empty

My mother kept a vanilla pod in her castor sugar jar as it was then good for sponges etc.

Take a small glass bottle, half fill with vodka, ( because it is tasteless), and put used vanilla pods in whenever you have one. Shake well now and then and use the dark brown resulting liquid as vanilla essence. Waste not, want not.

Great

My vanilla pods came from Lidl, I can't imagine I would have paid more than £1.50 for it, probably less.
Waitrose has huge markups on almost everything and frankly I don't find the quality warrants it.

It was the only place that had them <wails>

Jalima1108 Tue 03-Apr-18 17:27:04

When you gotta have something, you've gotta have it!!

Anyway, they should last for ages

There’s something about the seeds not just the vanilla flavour- the dish is poached rhubarb and blood oranges

Jalima1108 Tue 03-Apr-18 17:32:53

Do you just need the seeds for the dish? Then the pods could go into the caster sugar container for cake flavouring.

That sounds nice - our rhubarb is coming up now.

Good idea Jal. Also if you use the whole pod in a recipe, is it possible to dry it out and use it again?

Um, I don't know, it is years since I bought one.

But it's on my list for this week!

I read recently that the vanilla harvest was very poor last year and vanilla would shoot up in price. So I stocked up on a few extra bottles. (Just in case their is a siege or something. grin )

Jalima1108 Wed 04-Apr-18 11:39:20

DH informed me a while ago that the olive harvest was poor as well and that olive oil would be scarce.
I have several bottles in the cupboard - and there seems to be plenty in the shops grin

Just love that Michael McIntyre clip! grin
And yes, I shop at Waitrose!!!

I always take my trolley back (and tidy up all the other trolleys that others have carelessly shoved into the trolley bay!)

Ive got vanilla pods in vodka too much cheaper than buying the extract. I get a bundle of pods from Amazon thats cheaper too.

Another thread “resurrected” for a spam post- reported of course.

The Madagascan vanilla bean paste is usually about £5 a jar and works well, a jar will last me 12 months.
