Summer jobs

Went for a coffee today with my DH, I struck a conversation with a young lad I hadn’t seen working there before and he said it was just a job for the summer, he’s a sixth former.
Wondering if any grans have older children working in the summer or at weekends. I had a Saturday job on an inside market stall and then at a greasy spoon washing up. In the summer hols I worked doing laundry in a care home and also - more happily - making up rooms in a hotel in Blackpool, was given a room with another girl and meals included.
Not sure if this is the way it is now, though was pleased to see the young lad in the cafe getting a bit of extra money for himself.

Summer jobs were great. I had several over the years. You learn a lot from them.

My gd is home from university and has a summer job at a seaside cafe. It’s a lovely way to spend the summer.
I worked in a seaside restaurant when I was a teenager and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I worked in a local store Friday nights (late town opening for shopping ) and all day on a Saturday from age 15. Started a nursery nursing course ( which I got a small salary for ) at 16 and 2 months , me and my friend were the youngest there.

I paid my mother board and then had to budget for my own clothes, makeup, fares and lunches to college . My mum gave me a lift to my placement and I had free lunch there .

It’s good for teens to do some work as well as study it teaches them different things. I learnt to manage my own money at a young age and have always been a good at budgeting. I feel we had to grow up more quickly in the 60’s and become more independent than today’s young people . I got married at 19 but that’s another story ( and a big mistake)

One of my daughters works at a farm park. When the universities and schools are on holiday she gets far fewer hours, because students are much cheaper to employ.
Zero hours contracts really hurt workers with no or few qualifications.

My 16yr old DGD is looking for a job for the rest of the holidays.
DS is so protective of her. He doesn't seem to want her to find one.
