You talk of lefties and righties - how about all those who are definitely NOT ardent righties but not dedicated and uncritical lefties either? It is not all snowy white or pitch black.

Maryeliza, you are one of the most robust posters on GN. You have strong views on many subjects and you post them forcefully and disapprovingly - as do/did those departed posters posters. You may not appreciate how less aggressive assertive posters can feel when consigned to the numpty bin and it is implied that they don't qualify as fit to post with the grownups.

What I would like on the politics board is more defined threads on a specific topic but now if I think about starting one I’m not sure if it’s already being discussed in one of the long rambling ones I can’t be bothered to read so I just leave it.

You know what, maryeliza, why don't you just do it and see what happens? I'd be up for it. Threads do wander but they can always be brought back to the OP if necessary.

As presumably one of the "keenest political lefties" remaining I really find it offensive that you should target people no longer able to answer for themselves. Having been called a communist, a Trotskyist, a Marxist and a Corbynista- none of which I am by the way- and having asked many times for people on the right to explain just how this Tory government is improving people's lives and never getting an answer. Neither I nor anyone else as far as I remember accused anyone of being on the wealthy far right. We did sometimes try to find out what policies the right wing posters thought were working and why they thought as they did but never got an answer.

People on the right never ever ever post robustly or disapprovingly - for goodness sake. Trisher your post is spot on and says everything. And yes the Corbyn threads are full of pathetic uninformed stupid right wing posts - hope that’s assertive enough for you Elegran

It will be interesting to read the political threads post-DJ/GG/WW. Perhaps with the more vocal posters gone (probably temporarily) more posters will emerge, from new members too, and new approaches and attitudes will be discussed? Fingers crossed the discussions will be tolerant and non-confrontational and no-one will be offended?

For the record, although I doubt anyone is interested, I voted to leave. And would do so again. I am neither particularly right or left wing. I have not slagged anyone off, in fact I was interested in what DJ had to say, but gave up under the deluge of links she put on. But it was made clear that I really didn’t know what I was talking about on the rare occasions when I tried to explain my opinion and perspective. I never believed any of the exaggerations bandied about whether printed on the sides of buses (how much? No way) or spouted by Mr Cameron (there will be war. No country will trade with us. Ever.) My opinion and belief is purely based on the way things are for me and mine and where I live. Probably this is the case for most of us. Londoner and the south east mostly voted remain because it’s in their interest to do so.

I voted out because I don’t like the way the EU elite are controlling the member states. I don’t like the way they burn our money. I don’t like the control and influence over us from other countries of such different cultures to our own - and this works both ways. I don’t like that we can veto what other countries want to do either. I was happy with a common market of nine countries. The EU has grown to big, cumbersome and very ill managed. I never expected that the Leave vote would win, only that it may put a brake on Brussels, but I’m still glad it did.

I also suspect most of our politicians want to come out. They didn’t have to follow the results of the referendum. They could have said the result was too close and had a re-run. But both main parties are going with it. They wouldn’t do this if they didn’t believe we’ll be better off out - in the long run.

When I moved jobs to an affluent Outer London borough, without changing my political views one iota I became the left wing loonie.

People who are not "righties" got tired of being called so in numerous ways and, certainly in my case, where the insults were not just about my supposed position on the political spectrum, I occasionally bit back. It takes a saint to be goaded and goaded ad nauseam and not to react negatively and although I am not a bad person (I'm even a good person as I daresay you are too), I'm no saint.

I was reading an article about Putin having an inferiority complex the other day. It made me think of the GN political thread rottweilers.

Perhaps our politicians didn't have to go by the referendum result even though David Cameron, our PM at the time, said they would abide by the result. I have a certain respect for Theresa May sticking to that definite undertaking after Cameron copped out. What a cocky fool he was! So sure of a Remain result that he made a promise he couldn't keep. So he just ran away.

And then politicians wonder why people despise them.
