Dh is away for the weekend and I'm having a previously frozen curry and a bought rice.

I realise some of you are on your own all the time but i usually cook for 2.

What do you eat when on your own?

I am fat and greedy and eat too much every day but it’s all good homemade meals, no junk.
I’m mostly vegetarian and eat fruit for breakfast, homemade soup and salad for lunch, a cooked dinner. I usually cook enough for several meals and freeze the leftovers.
My downfall is sweet stuff, I can’t leave cake alone but rarely get a pudding nowadays. Young people don’t eat the delicious cooked puddings we had everyday when I was young.

Jacket potato with cheese, spinach and salad bits from fridge. Bliss. I've spoiled DH and do 2 courses every night, mad fool that I am.

dh is away tonight so I had a lamb steak, briefly marinated in balsamic vinegar, fried with a thinly sliced shallot and a chopped rasher of bacon, pan deglazed with a splash of white wine.

Plain and simple is what I love when I’m alone
Baked Beans on hot buttered toast with a mug of tea!
Shared with the dog of course and eaten from a tray whilst sitting in an easy chair

With due deference to those who are widowed or lonely .....Oh for the opportunity!

If popcorn isn’t available then cheese on toast is a fave option.

oldbatty Sun 13-May-18 17:07:51

nobody is saying a family sized milky bar washed down with red wine then?

If empty house I revel in the fact I can eat what I like without someone saying...oh that looks nice, any left?
I don't always eat what I cook for them as I've gone off it by then so when I only have to think of myself I go all out, steaks a common one

DH's work required a lot of travel away from home, sometimes for weeks at a time. I ate the same food and cooked in the same way, whether he was home or away.

Now he is, more or less, retired and is rarely away, so as it is only for the occasional meal, I will make macaroni cheese in his absence because I love it and he hates it.

Depends on whether you live to eat or eat to live!

I'm a student of the latter cult and worship at the local supermarket frozen meals counter. plus home-delivered meals-on-wheels, and any company delivering frozen gourmet meals. Lovely nutritional menus, ticking all the right boxes
In my humble opinion, it's the only way to go in these modern times. grin
Minimizes the foreplay i.e. cooking and gets to the main action i.e. eating, with the minimum of fuss!
And the bonus of virtually no washing-up!

Now there's a serious topic; washing-up for one.!
Hand or machine? confused
Decisions, decisions!

Bon-appetit and Good Health wine wine

I'm with Lemongrove on the popcorn. Otherwise, DH doesn't approve of meat, so I will buy an (expensive) steak and just eat that - nice and rare - without any sides. Once when he was away I bought a piece of stewing meat with bone and marrow in and made a stock pot with a selection of vegetables and ate it all week - it was the most delicious thing I think I've ever made!

A four egg (large size) omelette with lots of chopped garlic.

And I have been known to eat it straight from the omelette pan if I'm alone and - frankly - sometimes can't be arsed with scraping it onto a plate......well, that's one item less to wash up.

My husband is a big eater and is a thin as a rake. I never cook when he is away as it is such a treat not to have to bother. Tomatoes on toast. Perfect.

It is hard to get excited about cooking for yourself. Today, I’ve done loads of dips, chicken, flatbreads, because people here tomorrow. On my own, I do quite a bit of pumpkin pasta and rocket from Waitrose. Love their steak and kidney puds too! With some peas and rocket!

SingingSilver Sun 06-May-18 23:49:56

Pasta with pesto is my dinner go to when it's just me. Never more than a one pot dinner. But when the whole family is about I'm happy to juggle making four different meals!

I have always loved food but have a small appetite these days. When he's away I enjoy steak which he hates, lamb chops, faggots and curry which he also likes.

On an odd occasion a ready made meal from ASDA but I makeake macaroni cheese my favourite or just cheese on toast and another favourite chips and fried eggs must stop feeling hungry

Greengage Sun 06-May-18 17:50:54

My favourite thing to eat is plain fried scallops with bread and butter and mayonnaise! But in general I eat anything that takes my fancy at the time. More often than not, something that doesn't take long to get on the plate. However, if it is something that takes longer, I will cook three or four portions and just eat the same thing for three or four days! Can't be bothered to freeze portions for another day although I suppose it would make sense!!

Redrobin51 Sun 06-May-18 17:23:54

Lamp chops, mashed potato, whatever veg I fancy with thick tasty gravy and lashings of mint sauce or I make myself a cheese and potato pie as OH doesn't like either of those meals, yummy.x

You all eat such healthy food. I was out today with my daughter, who I don’t like very much at the moment and was finding the day stressful plus I have 6 stitches in my mouth after some dental work on Friday. So for lunch today I had a banana split and milkshake.

Saggi Sun 06-May-18 16:16:36

Liver and bacon with onions and tomato’s ...with mash potatoes. Husband hates liver...so that’s me sorted. Also fried ( in olive oil) mackerel, then add some sliced onions peppers mushrooms ...lovely.

twiglet77 Sun 06-May-18 15:33:45

sluttygran how incredibly sad that pressure from your family to embrace a vegan diet means you no longer enjoy your meals. Have they no respect for your right to eat as you choose? Nobody has the right to dictate that another family member must go along with someone else's fancy.

I love catering for one! If I've picked up a reduced joint I'll do an indulgent full roast with all the trimmings. I freeze portions of cooked meat, and freeze the rest of the carcass until I have a few to make a big batch of stock which again gets frozen in small portions. A slow-cooker casserole, or steak pie, lasagne or fish pie to last a few days or portion and freeze, a quick salmon fillet or a chop with potatoes and peas, or a day eating mainly cheese or eggs - in omelettes or on toast - I get lots of variety and it's great to be eating whatever I want that day. I grow most of my vegetables, and soft fruit, so I make lots of soup and crumbles. I like baking so there's always bread, cake or biscuits, and if all I want is cereal or pancakes that's ok too!

Gilled salmon once a week with rice and veggies; scrambled egg on toast as a main meal; chick peas in tomato sauce with baby spuds; prawn based stir fry with noodles; mushroom omlette with broccoli; salad with kidney beans; grilled lamb chops at the weekend. Fruit for dessert with two squares of dark chocolate or a yoghurt. If it takes longer than twenty minutes max I dont bother.
