Who was your first crush?

On Radio Southern Counties last night this was the question posed to the listeners, there were some very funny answers.

Was your first crush a film star and did you put their photo up on the wall ? I can’t remember his name but I had a cowboy from Laramie on my wall.

Was it the papergirl or boy or someone at school?

my first crush was also Ty Hardin. I somehow acquired a glossy photo of him, which I kissed every night before I went to bed. Now, I can't remember which American TV western he was in. I would enjoy watching one or two episodes if they are repeated on TV nowadays. My mother had a bit of a crush on the father in Bonanza, around the same time!

Nope not Clint Eastwood.

Paul M in his heyday had boyish good looks and when he leaned into the microphone with John and went 'ooo' I went weak at the knees. I don5t fancy him at all now, he has not aged well and should give up singing!!

Mine were David Essex, and also David Paton of Pilot. I even joined Pilot's fan club when I was about 13 or 14 - the only fan club I ever joined!

Claire Bloom at the Old Vic.

I think Elvis IMO was God’s gift to women ☺️ What a handsome man. I must admit in his porky era not so good, but his singing was sublime. ?

I suppose it would be unwise to comment disbelievingly on other people’s crushes, but Paul McCartney??? OK, I know a lot of people did have a crush on him, but I just don’t get it. Nor Elvis, who I thought revolting but (unintentionally) rather funny.

Paul McCartney; still is my crush. I was sad that I was too young for him, but Nancy is younger than me! (Not bitter..)

Richard Chamberlain - Dr Kildare.

pollyperkins Wed 08-Aug-18 16:28:00

Later I did fall for Cliff Richard, and later Paul McCartney. I was also a big fan of David Attenborough (still am!). But my daughter thinks it's hilarious that I put in my diary around 1960 'Saw D Attenborough on TV. He's gorgeous! ' !!!

lovebeigecardigans1955 Wed 08-Aug-18 16:24:01

Paul McCartney.

Russ Conway grin
I was about 7 and watched him playing the piano on the telly, looking at the camera with his big cheesy grin. I told my Mum I wanted to marry him when I grew up. Phew. Lucky escape. I then upped my game to Richard Chamberlain, who of course is gay, only I didn't know that nor what it meant if I had done. ?

imacmum Wed 08-Aug-18 15:24:30

Paul McCartney, I had a centre page picture on my wall, I used to kiss it goodnight every night, despite him having a cigarette between his lips smile

Davy Jones from The Monkees. I spent a whole weeks pocket money on a Fab 208 magazine with a centrefold poster inside. I had the single Day Dream Believer and I played it over and over again just so I could listen to his speaking voice at the begining. Okay, don't get excited man, it's 'cause I'm short, I know.........

My very first crush was Cliff Richard, I was less than two, but could sing 'Livin' Doll' with all the right words, and apparently do the 'lip curl' too!
I graduated on to Adam Faith, followed by Michael Landon, Lorne Greene (I've always quite liked older men), James Stewart, David Cassidy, Cary Grant, Gregory Peck and David Niven!
The biggest crush of the lot though, was, is and shall ever be Tom Selleck!

Yes it was Eric from 10 cc, but come on girls, how can a crush on somebody called Eric last, compared with somebody named Clint?
I think It was PT from Whirlybirds eyes that had me but I was only about 12! Although my crushes didn’t last long.

Jalima1108 Wed 08-Aug-18 13:03:30

Then, at 15, I fell in love but he let me down and broke my heart sad
Well, chipped it a bit.

Jalima1108 Wed 08-Aug-18 13:02:08

Sorry, I missed that Grandma70s!

I thought Francesca Annis was wonderful too, but I think I wanted to be her, rather than have a crush on her.

So many names of my early crushes have already been mentioned - Marc Boland, Ilya Kuriakin, of course, Dr Kildare, I think maybe even Tony Blackburn and then lots of boys in the 6th form when we were 12-year-olds in the 2nd form. Later, some of the boys in our own year caught our eyes, too.

One boy from my class I still hanker after to this day. I often think that if I had managed to get him to ask me out (he was very VERY shy) and even keep him for the rest of our lives, he would probably be just as bad as any other husband these days, so keeping him in my dreams is the best way.

And only very recently did I realise how dishy Elvis was - I didn't get it at the time.

Billy Cotton. No, honestly, we didn’t have a tv, so I only heard his voice on the radio. I was four or five at the time, and really in love. I’d moved on to Dick West the All American Boy ( Range Rider’s sidekick) by the time I saw a photo of Billy Cotton. (Range Rider is not to be confused with The Lone Ranger, btw.)

Anniebach Wed 08-Aug-18 12:15:06

It was Grandma70, I had forgotten my crush on the 6th former

Grandma70s Wed 08-Aug-18 12:12:43

jalima and anniebach, I mentioned my (female) ballet teacher, and Margot Fonteyn. It was quite normal in my childhood/youth to have same-sex crushes.

goldengirl Wed 08-Aug-18 11:22:01

Richard Chamberlain as Dr Kildare. I used to tape record the programmes [no videos in those days!] and listen to them again and again up in my room which was plastered with photos of him. My first ever LP was of him singing. It was only comparatively recently that I discovered he was gay - so that's why I missed out sad

Anniebach Wed 08-Aug-18 11:08:46

Jalima, you have reminded me, I went to see the Convent schools production of The Gondoliers, there a girl from the 6th form who was so beautiful , she would have been 17, I was 12.

allsortsofbags Wed 08-Aug-18 10:57:48

Barberdice I fancied David McCallum too rather than Robert Vaughan.
