Today is my 70th birthday, and at the weekend my dear children have organised a nice tea for me at a posh local hotel. It’s supposed to be a secret, but DGD age 4 has let the cat out of the bag - but that’s our little secret!
Last weekend I was treated to dinner and opera by gentleman friend, so it’s fair to say that I am an extremely lucky and very spoiled Nanna.
My darling daughter planned to take me and her brood our for lunch today, and grateful as I was, I pleaded a headache as I longed for a little stillness and peace.
I wish I had gritted my teeth and gone along with her plans, as I fear I have upset her. She is so kind and I love her dearly.
I really appreciate all the effort that’s been made to give me a special time for a landmark birthday, but I am not the party animal I used to be.
My grandchildren are the highlight of my existence, but I babysit a great deal because of daughter’s work commitments, and most of my days are spent in a welter of nappies, spilled drinks and quite a lot of pasta and vegetables in every nook and cranny! I found myself longing for a day of doing absolutely nothing except relaxing and pottering.
Unfortunately I now feel very selfish and mean for putting off the invitation, and don’t know how to make amends.
Have other Gransnetters had similar situations, or will I have upset the legion of poor grandmothers who have far too little contact with their beloved grand babies?
AIBU to say that husband was irresponsible?
