What exactly DOES this teach your kids ?

I threw a glass of water over an indolent teenager who was, yet again, refusing to get up for school. Less expensive than Allsop’s thing but equally done in the heat of the moment. And equally unhelpful. But we are human. We make mistakes. No parent, or tennis player, is perfect. And yes women are judged more harshly. And yes the former teenager did finally get up, aged about 21, got a 1st in degree and now works in a great job. Obviously all thanks to my glass of water!

Actually, Shizam, I read somewhere that dripping a few drops of water over someone who won't get out of bed does feel like a jug being poured over them.
So that's what I did - after pulling off the duvet, throwing it downstairs and realising she had fetched it and gone back to bed.

I’ve read quite a lot about Kirsty Alsopp lately, and none of it has improved my opinion of her.
She doesn’t sound at all like a loving mother, and she seems to have more money than sense.

It is an appalling piece of behaviour from a parent and teaches the children that it is ok that things are to be broken in anger as well as probably giving them an unnecessary amount of fear of their mother.

I'm not a Kirstie Allsop fan, never really liked her as I felt she is a bit of a prima donna, comes across as rather spoilt and too opinionated without having any actual substantive background from which to form her opinion. As far as I can gather, she has no professional qualifications in anything at all and simply left school without going on to higher education.

I would not go to her for advice about bring up children. She has no qualifications in this as far as I know. There are many properly qualified people and text books for advice and if a parent needs help then their local Health Services can direct them towards the best source.

She is a case of the new phenomenon. Getting famous without being qualified in anything and then pontificating on any subject she chooses and for some reason drawing an audience which hangs on to her words. We live in a society that rewards emptiness. People become well-known without having any qualifications such as Big Brother contestants who become famous and talk about everything under the sun without knowing a thing.

I've just thought what it actually teaches your kids is when you want your i-pad, phone, tech device updated keep winding your mum up until she smashes it and then she'll have to buy you a new one!

A good point well made trisher I think perhaps they will have been rewarded with the most up to date version well before now.

I know of someone who is involved in her Location TV programmes they say she is a devil to work with. Phil is just a bit dim I am told.

I like Phil, dim or not.

Have just read KA's interview in today's Daily Mail. If things happened as she describes I for one totally agree with her.

She didn't smash the iPads to pieces, she actually cracked the screens so they couldn't play on them. The screens have since been repaired, but they are not allowed to play PUBG or fortnite (both addictive multi player war games).

the cost of repairing a screen if you go to Apple is nearly as expensive as a new one!!!

I have just read the interview too. I am really beginning to understand why she did it!
I'm living at the moment (indefinitely) with my grandson small k and his aunt L who is his guardian, he has lost both his parents. My visitors are between houses.
I'm fuming, as I found something I thought he could do in the garden with me and he was plugged into the Ipad and didn't want to come. Usually he loves being in the garden. Bloody thing has him addicted………… I feel he isn’t stopped enough. I could take it out on the Ipad but it isn’t mine!

I have spoken to L and we didn’t row about it. Whether things will improve or not has yet to be seen.

Having cooled down a little, I think I would have locked it away, only to be brought out by me!

I saw a post on FB today, along the lines of:
"Dad, when will I get back my charger for my iPad?"
"When you've walked the dog
Loaded the dishwasher
Emptied the dishwasher
Tidied your room
That's when"

Not quite the same, but you get the gist

Although I must say that DGD and I played a game together on hers today

It was quite addictive

And I am struggling NOT to play solitaire, which I've realised has been my escape and addiction.......

My DSs have moved on from the i-pads to X-Box and PS2 on which they play Fortnite (sic) which is a pernicious and addictive game which I would ban if I was a dictator! When I was keeping an eye on them for a week during the holidays, I would willingly have thrown the things out of the windows. When I asked one of the boys why they weren't out playing football with their friends, he told me they were all at home playing this game as well. At least they are now back at school and the football and rugby seasons have begun again. 13-year-old scored a goal and assisted another to help his side to a 3-0 win today. Perhaps he is getting his priorities right again.

I read the Daily Mail article as well. It does put a slightly different perspective on it. Up to her if she wants to pay the money for repair. She can certainly afford it! She says the boys were shocked because she'd threatened to do it and when they sneaked back on the iPads after they'd been taken away she carried out her threat and they thought she wouldn't. She then spent quite along time explaining her reasons to them, all good reasons as far as I can see. Bit drastic but it appears it worked. Spent yesterday with 9 year old grandchildren who love playing Minecraft on their tablets , they are only allowed a certain amount of time but it takes several goes for them to out them down with cries of ' just a bit longer'. However once off them they are just as happy with Lego.

I play Minecraft - it's much better played without the silly monsters - it's a creative building game if it's allowed to be.

I have built a Nile Village and a Roman villa.... and learned some history in the process!

My grandson has bursts of temper - yes, standard for a three-year-old - but I am now beginning to wonder if they happen more after he's been on the Ipad a while.

Other addictive things are known to lead to aggressive outbursts when 'coming down'.....
