Ironing the wrong way round

Pointy side down and iron stand side up. DH doesn't iron but on rare occasion , being left handed he would do the opposite and pointy side would be on his right. For storage, I fitted a strap on the underside just below the iron stand and it gets hung up on a sturdy hook. So even if he removes it to get access to something behind, there's only one way it can be rehung.

Life's too short and precious to worry about such trivialities. Just think yourself lucky you've got somebody who shares the ironing!

I'm with jusnoneed regarding the ironing board.

DH and I have one of the other classic disagreements: which way round the toilet roll goes onto the holder!

I've let him have his way about it in the interest of peace.

I'm left handed but iron right handed so pointy end left, iron on the right. I can iron the other way too but prefer right handed. I swap hands during ironing if I need to.....so no help to OP really!

I look forward to hearing how you fold sheets together. I learned to fold them with my mother who was left handed whilst I was right handed so it worked really well. DH and I are both right handed so we end up in a twist!

Pointy end down to store. Is it your board Eglantine? I hate my daughter's ironing board!

Just like other right handers, I used to iron with the pointy end to the left. However, my ironing board has curved legs so that you can iron sitting down with space for your knees. Guess what....the pointy end is to the right! And it has to be stored downwards when collapsed. I wonder whether it is specifically for left handers or have we all got it wrong?!

Never put board down. I seem to iron most days as DH needs clean shirt for work every day & I wear things that need ironing. It stays by window in back bedroom & cats like to lie on it looking out at garden which means it is always covered with a towel when not in use. I used to have a Stella Star ironing system for many years & that was too heavy to move so I got used to it being up all the time.

I don't suppose there's any chance of you putting a picture on here of the lover doing the ironing, is there?

I'm right handed for everything except ironing so it's pointy end to the right & iron on the left. Board is stored pointy end down. Interestingly, both my parents are left handed as were their siblings,5 in all. Neither my sister nor I have more than a tiny nod to the trait- she had to have a left handed hockey stick but that was all. I married a left handed man but are 2 children are completely right handed. It's very interesting why some are & some aren't!

I am right handed. Ironing board pointy bit up when folded and to left when ironing.

You will find yourself compromising on many things....give and take etc...

Never thought about it but we are all left handed in this house and we all do our own ironing. I consider it a life skill for all mums to teach their sons how to iron when young.

I have a steam generator iron, which is on a small table on the right, and I always used to have the pointy bit to the right, because that’s the way I’ve always done it. But I found the steam hose always got trapped between the board and the (unused) iron stand, so I turned the board round to point to the right - problem solved.

I do my ironing in a spare room, so I hardly ever take the board down. When I do, it usually goes on its side against the wall.

I always stored my ironing board pointy bit down or the board would open up and collapse. Now it stays up on my landing so no problem.

In use - pointy end to left, iron stand on right (I'm right handed). Put away - pointy end downwards to floor. But if he does the ironing I couldn't care less which way the ironing board goes.

My ironing board is held in the closed position with a clip under the wide end. So I always have that at the top, i.e. pointy side down, when folded.

Pointy side down when folded, to the left when erect. Same height for DW and me. Portable TV or laptop facing me when I iron shirts, trousers, hankies, or DW''s blouses., as I believe in long sessions.

Iron on the left,, pointy end on the left. Don't really do much ironing these days though! Oh almost forgot pointy end facing downwards when stored.

It’s a man thing! My ex husband and my partner always stored the bit where the iron should go at the bottom.

Pointy end up for me - always! Though I'm right handed, I use my left hand a lot. When standing with the board in front of me ( point to the left), the folding lever is on my near side, slightly to my left,mane I use my left hand to raise it. It feels natural to me to raise the pointed end up, and have the wider, more solid end on the floor for putting away. It feels too heavy if I do it the other way round. My ironing board was a wedding present fifty years ago, and is much heavier than those of my DDs. I always feel that theirs are going to topple! DH used to put it away for me sometimes- always the other way up. The lever was then at the bottom of the board!
