Dairy Cook Book

My day is made! A new edition is available through our Milkman, this book along with a set of Delia taught me to cook for my family when I was younger and is now held together with string. I am showing how I have changed, I used to be furious with DH if he bought a cookbook as a present, but this morning to find this offer on our doorstep has made my day, along of course with a promised visit by DGD and parents later. A useless post but cannot get over how delighted I am to replace such an old favorite and I have to tell someone!

Yes indeed. Norman had a brother, Trevor Jump who was our postie. I remember dating him when he was previously in the Navy and mum always banged with a slipper on her bedroom floor if he was still in the house at 11pm. She'd yell down, 'Goodbye Trevor' every few minutes. Embarassing. sadblushgrin

I had the book remember getting it near Christmas from our milkman, don’t know where it went. Sadly don’t have a milkman anymore.
When the children were very little midweek he would leave me eggs, bread as well as milk was always useful.

I still have my ‘Dairy Cook Book’ and also the old Bero baking cook book which is brilliant. My most used book, however, is a Mary Berry I was given in 1977 as an engagement present. The pictures are dated and pretty ‘seventies’ but all the recipes, proportions, timings and temperatures still work.

Norman Jump, now there’s a name to conjure with!

My DM always used a Dairy Diary and I did until we moved house and no longer have a milkman. Our lives are so random that having a set supply of milk doesn’t work anymore. I don’t think we use so much as we used to now calories and cholesterol have come into our lives.

Not seen a milkman in years, or a newspaper boy either, both vanished from my corner of the UK.

I remember them and have a very old one. I also have a well kept thick booklet from the Milk Marketing Board, The Cheese Board and one from the Fisheries Board. The cheese and fisheries boards may not be the titles they used but were similar to the MMB booklet. Mum used to always get the Dairy Diary from Norman Jump, our milkman.

I have a collection of these.
I get them from charity shops or amazon.
Have some pre metric.
Some changes are made over the years as we change our habits and become familiar with "foreign" food.
The bigger dairy cookery books are very good also , I have a lot of those too.
Can't beat the A5 diary sized one in my opinion.

I have just looked on Amazon, and there are several second-hand copies of the Dairy Book of Home Cookery including one from 1997 for the princely sum of 50p plus postage

Legs, the The Dairy Book of Home Cookery, costs £11.99. Available from www.dairydiary.co.uk or from Milkman.

I was given a Dairy Cookbook as an engagement present in 1968 and still use it now, although it has been taped together many times and has a variety of stains throughout. I also have the Dairy Book of Family Cookery from 1983 marking the 50th anniversary of the Milk Marketing Board, not quite as dog eared as the first one but still well loved. Wonderful books.

I have a Be-Ro book that my mother in law gave me when we got married 35 years ago, and a collection of Dairy Diaries that I accumulated over the years.

I still make the Dairy Diary Pina Colada cheesecake, which is a killer on calories but absolutely lush!

I also have a collection of Marks & Spencer cookery books from the 1980s which I still use regularly - again, barely a passing nod to healthy cooking lol, but delicious

Oh yes! I used that book a lot but not sure what’s happened to it. Probably lost in a house move along with Larousse Gastronomique which I was bought and NEVER used, unlike the Dairy one. We don’t have a milkman any more. I wonder if it’s available anywhere else?

I didn’t have The Dairy Book but I do still have the Bero book. I made pancakes with my grandson recently and used the Bero book recipe. To my astonishment they were quite tasteless compared to what we buy in the supermarket. Then the light dawned on me. The manufacturers of pancakes have been adding sugar to them over the years. So now we are used to sweet pancakes.

I still have the first Dairy Book of Home Cooking.(1968). My 2 daughters (49 & 51) liked it so much they managed to get their own ( second hand) copies when they got married. I see there is now a 50th Anniversary Dairy Book of Home Cooking available.

KatyK Fri 02-Nov-18 16:51:40

When I got married in 1969, my mum bought me a cookbook from the milkman. It was called The Dairy Book of Home Cooking, as I recall. I loved it smile

Jalima1108 Fri 02-Nov-18 15:44:13

we don't have a milkman hmm

Jalima1108 Fri 02-Nov-18 15:43:37

I still have mine and a friend who is a good cook was so taken with it that I promised to order a copy for her - only to find it was not obtainable. At the time I was relieved that I hadn't given her my copy!
In fact, I haven't used it much lately, but it's there if I do want to and I must let my friend know.

Thank you Hilltopgran

Read the title as Dirty Cook Book! I was quite intrigued to see the recipes...lolblush

Bathsheba Fri 02-Nov-18 14:05:10

Oh yes I used to get the Dairy Diary every year too kitty. I cut loads of the recipes out at the end of the year and stuck them in scrap books.
