I remember a joke years ago about a couple who had won £75,000 on the pools.
A friend said"What about the begging letters?"
The reply was"Oh we will still keep sending them"

I just watched a news conference for Frances and Patrick Connolly winning £14.9m on Euro Millions. What lovely people they are and I wish them all the best for the future. They will obviously keep their feet grounded and remain happy in the knowledge that they can make a difference to so many people's lives..
In my mind, there can never be too big a windfall - the more you win, the more you can help others.
Keeping my fingers crossed that I win next time!

I agree with Watermeadow too. Lots of millionaires or even double millionaires would be so much better. I would be terrified of kidnapping and extortion with the amount they have won, I would be scared to let any of my family out without a bodyguard and what fun would that be?
It's lovely but personally I would never go public.
I heard somewhere that Camelot withhold some of their support services to winners unless you do? But not sure how true that is.
I think its prob a case of "go public now and we will look after you, or dont and have it come out later and youre on your own" sort of thing
Either way they do heavily encourage people to go public.
In my fantasies about what I would do if I won BIG I decided that we would tell people we had a win but tell them it was a relatively small amount. £750,000.
That would explain our gifts to family and our house move but wouldnt make us stand out as a target.
It would allow us to be generous and a bit flash.
I would start foundations rather than give to existing charities so that I knew exactly where money was going and would admit to founding it but would claim to have other big donors.
It always baffles me why these huge lottery winners go public? Surely all the begging letters and people expecting money from you would be overwhelming. I wonder what Camelot says to the winners to convince them to announce their winnings to the entire world?
It gets out. I know someone who won and didnt go public and everyone found out. I guess going public with camelot is controlled and you have support.
My links never work, is there a trick?

A million is not a great deal of money now. It would just about build a fairly modest house where I live. However that is a massive win to worry over. I think you need to go public to get the support and advice of Camelot financial advisors and with such a huge win you would certainly need that.
Well I didn’t win the Euromillions but ERNIE did come up with £225.
Please form an orderly queue !
A million is not a great deal of money now.
It certainly is to some of us!
Well, not wanting to brag, but I got a free lucky dip for next week’s lotto this week and £25 on the premium bonds. I’m working up to my big win.
It certainly is to some of us! shock
I think what that poster meant is that it is not an unusual amount to own, not that it wouldnt be life changing.
There are plenty of not particularly flash properties around worth half a million. It would be relatively easy to spend it without attracting a lot of attention. If you tried living like the super rich on "just" 1mil it would be gone in a flash.
Round here it would maybe get you 3 bog standard semis, more easily 2 terraces and a semi, and leave you no change at all. So if you wanted to significantly help out family and friends or help your children on the property ladder it wouldn't actually stretch very far.
Well round here - which is what I’m interested in - the average house price is still under £160k, so I could buy six outright and have £40k change. To me, and I’m sure to plenty of other people, that would be pretty life-changing.
The thing that people forget when they suggest 'more smaller prizes' is that it's only the massive prizes that keep people paying and playing - as soon as it gets to a really enormous sum, more and more people play, making the prize money grow even larger. There are plenty of lotteries now and even some of the Camelot games where you can win smaller prizes so it's horses for courses as such - people who pay Euromillions want to win big. I believe the UK does very well at winning the top prizes which may suggest that more of us like the idea of a massive win - I know I do and have never missed a draw since it started.
*play (or Freudian slip ?) (DD calls playing the lottery the 'stupidity tax' ?
To me, and I’m sure to plenty of other people, that would be pretty life-changing.
Noone is saying that a mill wouldnt be life changing, what we are saying is that it would be easier to explain than larger wins without having to go public about the win!
Spending 1mill wouldn't attract the same attention or security risks as spending a euro millions win would.

Your interpretation must be different to mine.
Its not a great deal of money in that a person with a million in property these days isn't famous locally as the local millionaire. You can spend a mill these days and fly under the radar.
It will change your life and maybe your loved ones lives, but you wouldnt particularly stand out and be considered very rich/wealthy
notanan2, where I live a person with a million in property would be famous locally as the local millionaire! I have just checked to see what I could buy with my money. The only house coming up in that bracket (spot on a million) is a beautifully maintained Grade II historic manor house in 2 lovely acres. With five reception rooms as well as the splendid Great Hall.
I'd stand out.
Sorry, that should have been Grade I.
Grade II - pah, as if I'd consider that.
That would maggie!
I did a rightmove search for 900,000 - 1,000,000
A few 4 or 5 bed detached houses (not shabby! But certainly not remarkable palaces.)
A few thatched cottages
A fair amount of 3 bed apartments (mostly penthouses)
Having a million would depend a lot on your age. If it was a youngster they'd be hard-pushed for it to last a lifetime all things taken into consideration.
It just shows how house prices vary across the country. I'm now dreaming of my new life as lady of the manor....
Though I'd need another win to pay for the staff.
You would! Those big manor houses cost 10s of thousands a year to run too!
I found a 2 bed apartment for just under a mil a few miles away. Not even that big had one of those open plan living areas where your kitchen is just along the back wall of your living room.
I'm not keen on that!
Did find a nice 4 bed surrounded by trees.... I would spend my win on buying somewhere where I could see nothing but trees and sky from every window!
