I'm watching 'The greatest dancer', and its inspired me to ask if anyone dances?
Clubs? Ballroom? Do you enjoy moving to music?
I'm too self conscious to dance, and I feel its such a shame as I love music.

As we are recalling venues and I know we have GN's from Nottingham, do any of you remember the Palais which I think was in the market area and the Astoria which again I think was in the area which now is around the Broadmarsh shopping centre.
Much of my youth was spent in those places, also the Commodore in Aspley.
Such happy days.

There are ballet classes for over fifties here in London and they are very popular. Loads of us in our sixties and seventies, struggling with direction and memory not to mention grace. We look not unlike the three year olds at the other end of the age spectrum! I did loads of ballet when young and love these classes which have women, and some men, who range from experienced but doddery to total beginners. Feet trouble mean I can’t go any more and I miss the classes so much.

Anyone remember the hippy hippy shake?

I started ballet and tap at 8 y/o and passed my test at 10 to go on pointe. They couldn't find a company in these whole USA that would make a shoe small enough for me, so I quit and cried. Disco, Motown, Country kept me going when I got old enough. We don't have dance clubs here, but Jazz and Salsa are wearing out my carpet. DH can't dance but LOVES to watch me. Don't stop the music.

Recently joined a line Dancing group - what fun, a great physical and mental work out. Love the music too!

I love any kind of dancing, BUT, I cannot get coordinated to “floss!” Most frustrating!

That clip of the older couple...blooming marvellous. Loved it. shockgrin

You're welcome Quickdraw.
I loved Victoria; she and Julie Walters never minded getting right into character. smile

GabriellaG54 Sun 13-Jan-19 16:45:44

...and not once did she move her feet. They must be glued to the pavement. If she moved a bit more she'd shift some of that weight. grin

Thankyou so much for that link Miss Adventure. Made me laugh so much and I had tears in my eyes because Victoria is no longer with us. She was one of few comedians who I actually find funny grinand it lead me on to other link of top ten dances from musicals. Shared it with GSs as they are very interested in dance and youngest starting lessons next week. Thanks again flowers

They don't make 'em like this any more. Locarno Ballroom.

Glenn Miller and I'm off. Uncontrollable but I love it. Happy days indeed.

Pagzy Sun 13-Jan-19 14:54:03

Yes if you count Zumba Gold which is moving to music using eg salsa and Charleston steps.

I have always loved dancing. I came from a large family that had lots of parties ( without alcohol ) with much dancing. DH and I loved dancing, particularly rock n roll. After seeing the film Saturday Night Fever, we bought the soundtrack and danced to it in the fashion of the film. We always made up our own steps to the style of the music. I still dance with youngest GD. The others don't find it 'cool' now. I can never understand why music doesn't make everyone's feet long to move in time to it.

Used to go dancing when I was young.
Now I have a dance around our home, radios always on
So nice to have a jig.
How many of you
f you have a good old radio like a Roberts, when I’m cooking in the kitchen always on with music playing my mum always had a radio in the house brought up with dancing to music.

MissAdventure Sun 13-Jan-19 14:36:29

Northern soul used to be quite a thing here.
People would travel for miles to go to our club.
It never really interested me though, strangely enough.

susieq3 Sun 13-Jan-19 14:36:13

I’ve just taken up jive classes at the age of seventy two!
Always loved to dance. Had to give up tap two years ago when I was diagnosed with a heel ligament problem.
It’s so much fun and good exercise too.

GabriellaG54 Sun 13-Jan-19 14:33:51

All nighters at WC. shockgrin
My friend's brother used to go (separately). He took a holdall with a decal of a fist on the side, which held a change of clothes as dancing made you sweaty.
The Twisted Wheel and Penny Farthing come to mind too. So many great northern clubs.

Maggiemaybe Sun 13-Jan-19 14:21:12

Northern Soul certainly is still a thing! DH goes to NS nights at least twice a month and they’re well attended. Quite a lot of young folk go too. I went with him recently and there were plenty of oldies on the dance floor all night, with nearly all the moves (nobody attempted a back flip ?). Though DH commented that it might be wise to have St John’s standing by these days.

It is hard to keep still when the music takes you..

Will dance to most music.. feet tapping to violinist, Sam Sweeny, formerly with Bellowhead.

Fennel Sun 13-Jan-19 14:05:10

I love to dance too, but am a bit creaky now. I met husband at a dance hall back in the 70s.
My favourite tune for dancing is ABBA Dancing Queen.
Also Billy Joel It's Still Rock and Roll to Me.

PECS Sun 13-Jan-19 14:05:09

Gabriella Northern Soul still a thing! I know folk who go!

GabriellaG54 Sun 13-Jan-19 13:59:33

I loved dancing, found it hard to sit still when the right type of music was being played. As a teen I used to jive, went through several other types of popular (at the time) dances, twist, locomotion, even hand jive, never been into ballroom etc. When I went to live in Egypt I also learned to Bellydance which I used to do in the hotels. now at almost 77 I can hardly stand up, I'm in so much pain, let alone dance, but when I hear the music I like I so want to get up and dance. Wish I could.
