I'm watching 'The greatest dancer', and its inspired me to ask if anyone dances?
Clubs? Ballroom? Do you enjoy moving to music?
I'm too self conscious to dance, and I feel its such a shame as I love music.

Rufus, did you ever go to dances at Belle Vue?
Or the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool?
Buffy: 'Fraid not! Too young! We were living in Wythenshawe when Dad moved to a new job "darn" South in Slough just before the war; quite a big move for those days, leaving all our Aunts and Uncles in M/c. Only saw Blackpool tower during our annual holiday pilgrimage. All my dancing "skills" were developed at ballroom dances at various Town halls and the like, but "strictly ballroom", waltz, foxtrot, whereas Vera was a natch at Samba, rumba even tango with a silver medal in something or other. I still wonder why she put up with my style; she must have welcomed "Excuse me" numbers! grin Any way, I revelled in it!
How about you Buffy? Did you glide the light fantastic at the Tower?
Happy Days wink

Dancing/Dance Halls! Brings back wonderful memories. Probably nowadays the only place a gentleman can hold a lady without being accused of something or other! grin

I was forced to take dancing lessons when I was 11. I lasted 6 weeks. Never again.
And I don't like music anyway - so I'm a lost cause. smile

My partner and I go ballroom and Latin dancing. Love it.

I really miss the line dancing I started at 68. I was hopeless for about two years but gradually got the hang of it. Then, several joint replacements and now one leg longer than the other and I am worried about falling down.

I often trip the light fantastic around the kitchen too
Me too! Especially when I've stuck my hand under the scalding hot tap! sad

I do a bit of dancing in front of Top of the Pops' most weeks. It may help in the mobility department and while the weight loss has been successful it is very slow.

smile You put me to shame.

I’m 86 and go to keep fit/ dance classes three times a week, I look forward to it and feel so much happier when I’ve been.
I’ve had two knees and one hip replaced and been told by doctors to keep doing what I’m doing.
I often trip the light fantastic around the kitchen too.

I have recently joined a Silver Swan Ballet Class and am enjoyiig it though find it a challenge to brain and body at 68.

MissAdventure Mon 14-Jan-19 00:16:48

I've never watched ballet, apart from a couple of things which were recommended to me.

Bijou Mon 14-Jan-19 00:11:05

I did ballet until I was twelve when I had to give up because we moved and there were no classes. Did ballroom in my teens and in the WAAF. The WI I belonged to did country dancing and we had competitions against other WIs.
On TV once they had some young dancers doing country dances like those of Jane Austin’s time. They were exhausted. Now I can hardly walk let alone dance. I love ballet and wish there was more on TV not just at Christmas.

Learned ballroom, Latin and rock n roll back in the 70s
Now all I can manage is a bit of shuffling about to favourite music.

MissAdventure Sun 13-Jan-19 23:33:39

I love this one.
Apparently this is a genuine interpretation of the song by this dance group. smile

There was a heap of Jimmy Shand records, 78rpm's
My friend and I used to listen to those when we were teenagers!!

I do like a bit of country dancing - we used to do a lot of that at school, English, Scottish - and we sang a lot of traditional songs from all over the country too.
It's much more fun trying to 'strip the willow' with a lot of other unco-ordinated folk colliding with each other than attempting a graceful quickstep.

mancgirl Sun 13-Jan-19 23:12:34

Oh, I love a dance. Mostly in the kitchen now but Christmas parties and weddings etc see me straight on the floor. Who can sit when you hear Out on the Floor and other northern soul songs or Tamla Motown, oh so many, feel like dancing right now - but 6am start with a 1 year old and a 3 year old tomorrowsmile, next time!

When younger I used to long to go dancing but DH not interested. At school when it rained and we couldn't go outside for sport we did barn dancing and ballroom dancing in the hall to a wind-up gramophone. This was an all-girls grammar school and as I'm not very tall I always got the female role so learnt the female steps. My taller friends all learnt the male steps grin

As soon as I was old enough I went to the Court School of Dancing. We had barn dances at church and I loved them.

Thankyou Lynne but I was way before your time.
I am talking the mid 50's to the mid 60's .
I am sorry that I missed Annabelle's and Tiffany's , I am sure I would have enjoyed them.
My D was there in the early 80's at Uni and Rock City was the venue of choice.

Lynne59 Sun 13-Jan-19 18:45:10

annsixty...I used to LOVE the Palais, in the 1970s. Tiffany's was good, too, and Annabelle's. I know Aspley weel but don't live that end of town these days.

Lynne59 Sun 13-Jan-19 18:43:37

I do Zumba 3 times a week and I go to Salsa lessons. I love both - they're good exercise, and a bit sexy grin
