Strange baby names

My Dgd is Jemima, always called Mim.....but I think of her as Jim Minor ?

Lindsay is the Scottish surname but like many of the Scots names it's used as a first name, first for a boy but then for a girl.
Leslie is another.
Bruce, Cameron, Campbell, Duncan, Donald, etc are clan names still very popular here in Scotland. Although girls are more likely to be named after islands such as Skye, Rhona, Isla, Iona and even Harris and Tiree. or the Gaellic, Siobhan, Mhairi, Shona etc.
Much as I like babies to be called cute names like Bonny and Daisy, I do wonder how it will wear as they grow up.

I have noticed lots of names these days are what was in the past a shortened version. Looking at names in DGC's classes for example Milly, Frankie, Billy, Bobby, Alfie, Izzy, Teddy, Jamie, Charlie, Katy, Abbie, Danni, Danny, Lexi etc etc. Maybe they will choose the more 'grown up' versions as they age! Imagine 'Terri' May or 'Jez' Corbyn"!!

I too don’t like the wrongly spelt names either, my friend just has a new grandchild Jaxon this seems the latest ‘in name’ ummm
We had a Raine and a Gail in the class above me at school
Another friend has a 2 year old Flo I can only ever think of Andy Capp when I see her, another friend has a Bertie a delicate looking little boy with long hair
However I guess all babies grow into their names

I have friends with Willow, Sienna and Sorrel - love all three names.

When my youngest DGD's name is called, you look round for someone from 'Last of the Summer Wine'.
When I was teaching I remember a China-Blue, a Hesione, the dreaded initials TJ, but spelt Teejay, and also a child who must have been of French heritage, Jean-Luc.
But different from my day, when it was Kathleen, Maureen, Susan, Brenda, Norma, Annette etc.

I taught a family with a Gorse and a Bracken come to think of it.

I have a 10 year old granddaughter called Edith - but we call her Edie and it suits her!

My Dad apparently, wanted to name me Sophonsiba eeek. So pleased Mum vetoed that one

Bracken is rather nice, I think. I know of a Juniper.

When I was at school most girls seemed to be called Jean, Susan, Anne or Margaret. I think there were five Jeans in my form. Margaret is coming back into fashion, but no Jeans or Susans that I am aware of.

My DH wanted to call our daughter Prudence. With apologies to anyone called Prudence, she says she's grateful that I wouldn't let him!

I heard the name "Edith" for a lttle girl the other day and I thought it was rather nice.

It’s strange people get it wrong. Unfamiliarity, I suppose. Penelope is not usually mispronounced - I’ve never heard of a Pennyloap.

A girl at school was called Vicki and she had to forever correct teachers who wanted to put Victoria on the register. "Surely you weren't christened 'Vicki', it isn't possible?" Yes she was. Annoying for her.
I hate some of these silly American names, like Kady.
I have heard Sian (Sharn) pronounced Sy-ann and wonder why the mother wasn't informed.

This is such hot topic in our house as my daughter is overdue by 5 days. We don't know the sex so have been having fun guessing names. I know she'll be sensible but there's always a worry that they might pick something that makes you go "oh!" before jumping in with "that's lovely".

As a Scot, I'm all in favour of a good strong name for boys - Euan, Cameron, Douglas, Callum... My own son being called Scott of course. Girls names can be a bit more creative. My daughter is Caitlin but called Katie (she does complain that it causes problems on official forms as the initial letter isn't even the same and she has to convince people she is the same person...)

But my absolute favourite name story is that one poor child in the 1980s ended up with the title of Pocahontas McGlinchy. Presumably, the parents were fans of the Disney movie out at the time....

My 7 year old GD asked me why I had given her daddy such a strange name. She told me it wasn’t a real name and asked if I made it up. I informed her he was named for one of my favourite characters in a series of books I read when I was little girl. His name? Guy.

A hairdresser that I knew once was called Annette and her surname was Curtain

David Bowie’s son, Zowie Bowie changed his name to George. I can understand why.
No. He actually changed his name to Duncan Zowie Jones, so he didn't hate the name that much. He's now a successful film director, rarely using his middle name, but probably didn't want anyone to think he'd got to where he is because of his father's name.

Jalima I had a friend who went by the name of Gina she was actually called Ena but really disliked the name. But it was in the days when Ena Sharples was in Corrie, and we were teenagers ?

Where I used to work, we came across quite a few strange names - Ocean, Heavenly Daughter (yes really - father said that was what she was!!) Jessemiah (a boy), Hereward, Gringo, Breffanee, and even Thor (thankfully a boy!) just a few that have stuck in my memory. The look on the faces of the other customers as the names were called out was always good for a giggle, and the nonchalance of the parents as the took their child
When I worked for the NHS, there was a Staff Nurse A. Nurse and a Dr Doctor!!!
Oh, and one of my work colleagues said she went to school with a family of girls that were named after flowers - Pansy, Hyacinth, Tulip and Daisy, with the surname Potts!
