I think I read somewhere than many comedian (type) do have manic or mental health problems I believe Tony Hancock, Frankie Howard, and Kenneth Williams were all known to be depressives, interesting subject

I didn't know him at all!

I put him in the same sort of box as Robin Williams, Spike Milligan and one or two other who seemed manic and uncontrolled. Such people are usually very unhappy.

He lived down the road from me.

I knew him quite well in the old days when he used to play the home town clubs with his band. He never had any money and I used to buy him Coca Cola. Freddie had a bad stammer then and hated anyone driving at more than 5mph...really.
I think he acted to fool doing impressions to cover up his insecurity.
Came to my mum's for dinner a couple of times and was very polite but he could be very OTT and embarassing at times and, some months later, rang to ask if I'd go to Expo'67 with him but I had a boyfriend by then who later became my husband.
RIP. Marmite. Sleep well.

I knew Freddie Starr when he was Freddie Fowell - born same place as me! Followed him for years and he WAS very funny to start with and then....fame took ahold! And boy did it!!! My final 'audience' with Freddy Starr was one of complete disbelief!!! and you are talking about the 70's here!!!! I could not believe it. Obviously tanked up and incoherent.

BUT for all that ... I felt a slight tinge of sadness at his death. Part of my 'history' I guess. Obviously a very disturbed individual in end RIP Freddie

I was never a fan but I thought it very sad how he seemed to end up alone

BlueBelle Fri 10-May-19 18:58:55

Not my cup of tea at all I m afraid, he didn’t make me laugh I just didn’t find him funny

umstrong I used to think he seemed quite manic too and wondered about his mental health

Anniebach Fri 10-May-19 18:58:19

Good on you*Chewbacca*.

Gonegirl Fri 10-May-19 18:53:58

How did I guess? hmm

Bellanonna Fri 10-May-19 18:53:36

Oops, I didn’t see your post Chewy. (Hi!)

Bellanonna Fri 10-May-19 18:52:55

I agree with all but one of you!

Chewbacca Fri 10-May-19 18:52:11

He was often rude, and sometimes crude, but he could be very funny despite that. And his singing voice, when he wasn't messing about, was beautiful. RIP.

fizzers Fri 10-May-19 18:47:20

was not funny by any stretch of the imagination - well not in my books anyway

Gonegirl Fri 10-May-19 18:45:24

Sometimes I quite like "crude and rude". shock

Urmstongran Fri 10-May-19 18:42:23

He wasn’t a comedian I enjoyed watching. I always thought he seemed a bit manic and wondered if he was bipolar.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 10-May-19 18:40:57

Never talk I’ll of the dead. But yuk yuk yuk

Floradora9 Fri 10-May-19 18:40:26

No loss at all he was crude and rude.

Cherrytree59 Fri 10-May-19 18:37:24

Always sad when someone dies.

To say he wasn't my cup of tea would be an understatement.

Gonegirl Fri 10-May-19 18:30:06

He's died. I feel quite sad. He was talented, and actually funny.
